Apologies for the confusion. Faye says she saw feathered wings, and then I say that the Mothman has wings but no feathers. I meant to say its *body* is not described as feathered.

In Norway, and probably other places too, we have something called forest terror. I have experienced it myself. It's when you walk in a forest and you inexplicably feel something is out there and you just have to run away. With stories adding to that, it is no wonder you would feel terrified in a forest that is probably as lovely as any other. It also serves as a way to explain why people can get scared by imagination alone.

I used to be a traveling repairman. I went to Point Pleasant 3 times. I met a couple who saw the Mothman. They were serious. They said the creature followed their car at high speeds. The one ladies dad was driving. Even he was scared. I later on talked to a preacher, who saw the Mothman perched on a fence. Ever since it sat there, no green growth will grow around where it was sitting. He showed me the spot.

Here’s my “Mini-Mothman Experience” Around the time The Mothman Prophecies movie was released, I was walking my dog late at night. The area was dark w/ lots of trees. Lights were shining from houses in the distance, so not pitch black. I see a small, dull, red glow moving above me in the branches of an oak tree. Looked like red bioluminescence. I freeze. My brain jumped to the movie. “Is it the Mothman? For real? In Louisiana? Why? How? AHHH!” Thankfully, I had a flashlight for night, potty dog-walks. Switched it on and pointed the light upward. It was a giant moth the size of my hand or bigger. The back of his head reflected brighter red from my flashlight. Didn’t explain how he was glowing red in the darkness only seconds before. My heart started beating again and my dog & I continued our walk. Still have not seen a similar looking moth 18 yrs later. Not even sure what species he was. The End Edit: Think it was Ascalapha odorata, commonly known as the black witch moth.

The fact that Emiliy is actually a Dr. In the related field and not simply sone random host reading a script made by a guy who made some internet research simply adds to the show. If this show was hosted by Greg and started "hey, i'm greg, welcone to monstrum" simply does not have the same effect (at least for me) than "I'm Doctor Emily Zarka, and this is monstrum"
@davidgould9431
@davidgould9431 5 жыл бұрын
I also love this reply. And the Dr's 'love' too. Given that Dr Zarka's PhD was "in English from Arizona State University, with an emphasis on the Gothic and the British Romantic period" (from her website: www.emilyelizabethzarka.com/ ), we can be safe in the knowledge that Dr Zarka is authoritatively writing about fiction. Don't get me wrong: it's a great video. But I suspect the real story is something along the lines of "a few people, who might have been in a questionable state of mind, thought they saw something, then everyone else thought there was something to see so, when they also saw something they didn't quite see properly, decided it was the same thing". Weird sightings go in trends: in the 16th/17th century it was witches on broomsticks; in the 1950s it was flying saucers. Brains are odd and easily confused, but they really, really like to have concrete answers. So they make things up. We are (to steal a notion from the Science of the Discworld series) Pans narrans - the storytelling chimpanzee. We should sometimes just accept that.

Years ago, I was in an Italian orchard with my wife - yes, we were lost: Italian maps were that good back then - and half a tree took off. We eventually figured out that it was an eagle owl. They are quite large but not that big. Our sense of perspective takes a huge hit when we are surprised. Perhaps the brain blows things up to make them seem more scary so, just in case it *is* something to be worried about, we run away faster. Anyway. Definitely an eagle owl in our case. And I suspect something like that with these reports. A big raptor or, at night, a big owl. But it's a fun story.

Recently, PBS studios took a survey, & asked for suggestions. I recommended a Monstrum type show, because Monstrum is amazing. This particular type of video is perfect for what I was trying to say. Amazing video btw, modern myth mothman. I liked how the townspeople were honest about not believing but doing it for tourism; they could have lied but didn't. I loved your enthusiasm, Emily.

I was born in Marrietta Oh. We moved to parkersburg when i was 3. Some kind folks from our church used to babysit me//very good people.. It wasnt until i was much older when I saw the mothman movie. When i did...i freaked out so bad. It brought back memories as a young child when I was at the Burtons house. I can tell you exactly where it happened and how it happened! How I remember this nightmare..I guess was suppressed in my memory..I was sleeping in a bedroom next to the driveway. i saw these red spots up in the trees back on their property.. I kept staring at it..then it flew down next to my window..It didnt look like a man but a huge bat! I havent told many people I know personally about this because I figured they would think i was nuts. I remember screaming and Charlotte came in and got me..I will never ever forgot it.. like I said...when i saw the movie...all this came back like...maybe it was a nightmare. i dont know. .

I remember being about the age of 11 when I first heard about Mothman. That had me scared shitless for weeks afterward, and I kept a blanket over my window to keep him from seeing me while I sleep. One night, I panicked because I thought he really was out there. Turns out I was only seeing the taillight’s on my dad’s truck shining against our garage as he was backing into the drive way. Also, why is it that every monster hunter elects to use a flashlight when they go into dark abandoned buildings? Why not bring a lantern?

A few details were missed. The couple who spotted him and escaped him in the car actually turned around and went BACK to the same spot to confirm their sighting and dismiss any arguments that they were crazy. They did see him again moving through a field. After that is when they took off again, reported to the police who questioned them separately. Then, with the sheriff I think it was, they all returned again to the site and reported seeing a mysterious dust cloud form over the field, saw strange shadows, and even witnessed a hoof like footprint on the ground.

Besides the normal "who cooks for you" calls were loud cackles, purrs, bill clicks and gurgling caws. It was coming from all over. We shined a flashlight and saw glowing red eyes in the loblolly pines. Surreal, eerie and amazing.

My dad grew up in a small town half an hour (along country roads) from Point Pleasant, and we’d drive through every time we went to visit his family. It’s cool seeing something I grew up hearing about being discussed on a broader medium.

It doesn't like light because it ran away from the car light in the story. I doubt Mothman is even a moth because it was just a made up name by someone who wrote the article about Mothman.

I am so glad I stumbled across your channel! It is really great to see a PhD unashamedly research these unknown bizarre, yet credible topics. And I just love your enthusiasm at finding an eyewitness sketch of the mothman at 4:48 . The excited little ‘yes’ that escapes from you is PRICELESS !! 😁 I think it also shows sincerity and that this field of study really, really interests you! Looking forward to viewing your back catalog as well as any new vids you produce!

I think Mothman is absolutely a good luck charm for the town, the bridge disaster was that no one heard him. This town will live forever because of Mothman.

"The Mothman was first seen in the 1960's." And that was a real trip man.

Point Pleasant is near where I live, and I used to work with a cousin of one of the original witnesses. My guess is that it was an unusually large bird. That said, Point Pleasant is a very dream-like town, a bit like a real-life Twin Peaks.

Job well done, I love hearing and watching stories about mothman. I wasn’t familiar with your channel till just now. I will ave the rest of my buddies subscribe as well.. you should do another video on the men in black sightings and that side of the story also at point pleasant. That’s what made the mothman story even more weird, it ties up really well. I’m sure all mothman fans would love it...

You're like a Kid in a Candy store in Mt Pleasant 😁 The production quality is just super! It's like Tom Scott's 'Amazing Places' - even more fun and interesting! Love the Moth Man pins Keep up the excellent work! On-site productions just take it to the next level!
