This might be a ridiculous idea, but, I couldn't help but think, maybe the reason why Gaia doesn't have an ending in the mythology is because the Earth hasn't ended yet.

That also would make sense to me by the fact that the Greek term for Gaia and the other deities like her wasn't Theos, if memory serves. An alternate translation that I've seen is Primordial, and rather than ruling the Earth, as Zeus ruled the sky and Olympus or Hades ruled the underworld that shared his name, she was a personification of the Earth.

I remember a lecture I had when we're in High School. Our teacher said that the story of Gaia and her children reflects how we, as humans, treat the earth. We think we're destroying it but we're actually helping her create something that could destroy us in the end.

There’s something interesting in that she was seen as a mother to all things, and ended up basically giving away every part of her self to her kids. If we do ever find some fragment of an old text that gives us an end to her myth, I hope she gets to rest

There're are plenty of version and some narrates that even among primordial gods, there are some who came into being earlier than the rest. It's usually starts with Chaos then then so on and so forth. I guess the more popular one is = Chaos -> Gaia, Eros, and Tartarus
@sonofcronos7831

She just said that the three protogenos were the most ancient according to the Theogony (Eros, Gaia and Tartarus). Ouranos, Pontos and the Ourea were primordials as well, beside Nyx, Erebus, Aether and Hemera that you mentioned. There was also others like Phanes, the god of creation and the one that bringed order from Caos (he is the indirect father of the primordials according to the orphics religions, because from his act of Creation he separated the mixed elements into the middle of emptiness, because Chaos is the empty, thus allowing the Primordials to exist).
@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@calladricosplays Nemesis was not a primordial. She, and Death, Pain, Sleep, Dreams and Friendship that the o.p mentioned are Demons, not demons in a evil way. Demons mean "spirits", because they are just the living spirits of abstracts concepts. A lot of people think they were primordials but they were not. Primordials are the fundamental elements of the universe, Demons are every type of abstrac concept you can think off.

Very cool video. I hate to say it, but I think that a huge reason we've seen an increased awareness of Gaia in the past few decades is because of Captain Planet. Even in that, she was giving power to children, and again, to imprison doers of evil (although cartoon bad guys never STAY imprisoned). It was very interesting to consider the possibility that she's a holdover from Neolithic times, which honestly makes sense since she's portrayed as one of the original gods from the dawn of time.

"Mother is the name of God in the mouths of little children." (probably mangling the quote from the Crow) Always thought Gaia just - went to sleep after a while in the myths. It says something about how I learned those myths, I guess. I wonder if we might take a look at "primal" gods at some later point? We've seen a bit of comparative stuff in this series before, which I always enjoy. Be interesting to explore what ideas, what "gods," are the most prevalent - the most basic concepts that maybe every human culture has cherished. Assuming there even is one!

When you're talking about her "missing from the myths," I become very curious about our sources for her. Like, who wrote the stories we're reading? When were they present in the oral tradition? How did the people telling the myths see her? Was she a model for motherhood for the people who told these legends?

It seems to me that Gaia's story was later conflated into the Motherhood aspect of Hera and Demeter. For example, often Hera's primary role is to attempt to keep Zeus in check, usually ineffectively and using what we would consider extremely questionable methods. Demeter's role in promoting the fertility of crops and livestock, in which her fickleness and inattention is the cause of more strife than her blessing is the cause of joy, also appears as a poor reflection of a true Earth goddess like Gaia. It reflects a cultural shift toward Male dominance and the reduction of the acceptable Divine Feminine to no more than an appendage to the dominant Zeus. Hestia, Artemis, and Athena were all supposedly virginal. To me, this smacks of appropriation of earlier goddesses while neutering them as Feminine in order to keep an aspect that males of the time felt comfortable worshipping. The only other primary Olympian who is Feminine AND fertile is Aphrodite, whose worship was specifically limited to matters of lust and procreation. Yes, Artemis is also representative of fertility in her worship, but not her own fertility. And the later introduction of Dionysus to supplant much of Hestia's prominence only reinforces my opinion on this.
@seaztheday4418

I'm not so sure about Hera, but I definitely think that Gaia and Demeter were once the same goddess. My reasons are mostly based on the Proto-Indo European earth goddess Dʰéǵʰōm, who was often called Dʰéǵʰōm MATER which would have been pronounced a lot like Demeter. This is extrapolated from the more commonly accepted idea that Zeus = Dyeus (pater) = Jupiter, but the Gaia/Demeter theory is still being debated by scholars, so for now, this is just a hypothesis

I met Mother Gaia while on mushrooms, snakes lead me to her (an animal commonly assocated with her) I saw her as the most beautiful women I'd ever seen, she was a beautiful black woman who turned into all things mostly a lion and other animals. There was a heavy focus on her mouth and how she spoke like a snake. She was surrounded by all living beings and nature who were singing a song I didn't understand all the words of I believe it was different names for her over n over the different names then the name I understood Mother Gaia. She spoke again a word I don't understand into my leg I believe it was healing. The whole time since the beginning of this mushroom trip my legs are SHAKING. That was all she said this word into my leg over and over and into my whole body. I believe Mother Gaia is a very very Ancient Goddess/being. How she looked to me reminded me of Mama Wata and I wonder if there's a correlation between the two. Also the snakes that lead me to her I believe were corn snakes which are prominent in Native American traditions I believe. It's interesting how interconnected everything is and how traditions from all over the word come together. She was the earth herself and I was honoured that she would gift ME of all people healing. I praise the earth when I can, kiss the ground and cry because I want to save this planet but I don't know how and I want to be our mothers child again but I don't know how. I hope we will all return to our Great Mother Gaia one day 💚💚💚

I'm working on a video about her for my utube channel, and like Gaia, she seems to have been 'forgotten about' in later times, but she may be the oldest name for God/dess, going back to pre-Vedic/ pre-historic times...

The narrative of Noah and his family may be seen as a symbol for the Gaia hypothesis, which suggests that Earth and its biological systems collectively behave as a single entity. Initially, they might have been a representation of humanity. As time passed, their differences grew into conflicts, and the Tower of Babel story dispersed and confused human languages. In a similar vein, the tale of Adam and Eve might be viewed as partly allegorical and partly literal, suggesting that Gaia was one of Noah's wives. Eve's name and story may allude to the importance of oxygen for human survival, with her name signifying the breath of life, as indicated in the data below. The Gaia hypothesis posits that Earth, and its biological systems operate as a unified, self-regulating entity. Viewing Noah and his family as symbols of this concept, they epitomize the original equilibrium and symbiosis between humanity and the natural world. The Ark, safeguarding life amidst the deluge, serves as an allegory for Earth's inherent regulatory processes that sustain life amid cycles of devastation and rebirth. The narrative of Adam and Eve may be viewed through the Gaia hypothesis perspective. The name "Eve" commonly symbolizes life and living entities. In Hebrew, "Eve" (חַוָּה, Chavah) has a connection to the word for "living" (חַי, chai), highlighting the crucial importance of life and consequently, oxygen, which is indispensable for the majority of living organisms. The name "Eve" (חַוָּה, Chavah) in Hebrew is indeed connected to the word for "to breathe" or "to live." This link underscores the fundamental importance of breath and life, pivotal concepts in numerous spiritual and religious traditions. God’s Name and Breath In many interpretations, the name of God, particularly the Tetragrammaton (YHWH), is also connected to the concept of breath. The pronunciation of YHWH is often considered to be an attempt to mimic the sound of breathing. This idea suggests that every breath we take is a way of speaking God’s name, symbolizing the divine presence in every living being. The Sounds of YHWH The initial segment, "YH," is akin to the sound of inhaling. The subsequent segment, "WH," is comparable to the sound of exhaling. Pronounced without vowels, "YHWH" emulates the inherent rhythm of breath: inhale (YH) and exhale (WH). Symbolic Connections Harmony and Balance: The stories of Noah's family and Adam and Eve may represent the original harmony between humanity and nature. This equilibrium is vital according to the Gaia hypothesis, which suggests that Earth sustains conditions favorable for life. Cycles of Renewal: The narrative of the Flood and the banishment from Eden represent disturbances to this harmony, initiating cycles of destruction and rebirth. These cycles are critical for Earth's self-regulation, in line with the Gaia hypothesis. Oxygen and Life: The name Eve, as the progenitor of all humans, emphasizes the significance of essential life elements such as oxygen. This highlights the mutual dependence between living beings and their environment. War and Differences As indicated, divergences and conflicts eventually led to warfare, further unsettling the balance. This mirrors the difficulties humanity encounters in preserving equilibrium with nature. The Gaia hypothesis underscores the necessity of collective efforts to maintain Earth's fragile harmony.

I find it interesting that an old Proto Indo-European name for the Earth Mother was Dʰéǵʰōm, or Dʰéǵʰōm Mater... Which sounds oddly similar to Demeter, though scholars still debate whether or not Gaia = Dʰéǵʰōm Mater = Demeter (although it's fairly accepted that Zeus = Dyēus Pater = Jupiter, so I think it's certainly POSSIBLE). Also, an epithet for Dʰéǵʰōm was Pl̥th₂éwih₂, meaning "Broad one", which seems to have turned into Vedic earth-goddess Prithvi - all these alternative names just make it clear how very OLD these Earth-Mother stories must be, to have been so widely shared, and broadly transformed.

I was first taught that Gaia cursed Cronus with a fate as same as Uranus after Cronus refused to free the Thousand Handed Ones and even trapped more Giants into Tartarus after Uranus was overthrown and exiled. Apparently she did the same to Zeus when he failed to meet his end of the deal to free the children trapped within her and Tartaturus after Cronus was defeated but it only worked partially because Zeus kinda did allow some of the Giants free, but only those he deemed was useful to him. Maybe the fact that Gaia is not mentioned is because she is the earth it makes her eternal while Chronos is representing the field of time.

Well, Dr. M&M, I have several things to say about this episode: 1. It's clear to me, from prehistoric time, how God was born as a woman (see the Venus of Willendorf, a rock figure carved as a voluptuous woman date 25,000 - 20,000 b.C.) and every depection of motherhood has transfigured into a godess with a growing diminishing importance after the most important historic revolutions: cognitive, agricultural, and industrial (yes, they're all tied to the patriarchy, but it's more complex than that..) 2. Real women have curves because every woman has the potential to create life in their wombs (And yes, the entire history of humanity revolves around uterus envy, not penis envy as Freud never saw it). 3. How do you not mention "Mother", Darren Arofnosky's film which casts Jennifer Lawrence as Gaia in a turbulent relationship with Javier Bardem's judeochristian God!!!? Anyways, another awesome episode, Dr. McTier. Thanx!!!

Find out more about the ancient earth goddess of the Germanic peoples. She has many names like Frau Holle, Hell, Perchta... There are also individual finds relating to her, such as "the Venus from Holle Fels", which has been dated to 35,000 to 40,000 years ago.

Human is just another Cronus, Ouranus and Olympians for Gaia aka Earth, we dominated everything on this planet but it's just a matter of time for us to get overthrown by nature itself.

I think it's that she's not at the top of the pantheon since it's a test, and the Greeks viewed things that had been going on forever as like gods or spirits that greatly influences us that are beyond us. On top of those is the impetuousness Zeus, chaotic but more on potential especially for transcendence (power/transcendence doesn't have any explanation, it's reserved for those who'd do/claim it from the ground) and Hera was all about human life especially birth. Gaia could produce all beings out there but the Greeks knew and mythologized that humans are in shape of the gods that amongst all other beings, (especially of Prometheus) we have the most potential for transcendence since we have the ability to create things of metaphysical level

Maybe she's gone in later myth because Hera inherit her role. Hera's the main antagonist of every Zeus affair. There's also a version which Hera is the mother of Typhon instead of Ge.

It's truly haunting that Gaia never truly had agency over her own body. It's easy to fall into the biases that we're so much more enlightened than our ancestors even though women in Iran, Red States, and all over the world continue to have their agency determined by men.

Wrong pantheon that was Shiva's blue throat. People are having a hard time swallowing food so Shiva swallowed the poison so if anyone that Shiva was linked with would choke it would come back out. Naga call it the sacred amrita. Can turn any poison into medicine. Please be mindful there's tricksters involved that spread rumors. Rumors create wars which generates money until the rainbow children arrive and the script flips.
