They did a really good job adapting the parallax scrolling to the PC Engine's limitations. Also, the soundtrack sounds much better than in the Mega Drive version.

That's for sure. The second stage is completely different from the MD and Arcade. A great improvement if you ask me.

Had this game back in the 90s. Hard as shit to beat back in those days to say the least. Great memories.
Love this game when I had turbografx-16. Hated level 5 with a vengence. Could never pass that level without losing a credit or two.

That mid-boss during the descent in "Borderline"; it looks like your ship and one of his bullets occupied the same space at about 16:02... That enemy always quickens my pulse because control is diminished.
@MultiJamesman8 жыл бұрын
You should recheck that, he's not anywhere near any enemy fire at 16:02, however, you can see him cheat by having this occur at 9:33. He is likely playing it slowed down as well.

I saw that too but it's the only moment I can't explain. The rest is pure mastery.

Note: if you beat the game with 1 credit, you got to play the second loop with higher difficulty. Score is retained. And if you beat the second loop, you got to play the third loop. However, from this point onward, the difficulty no longer increases. Maxing out the score to 9999990000 is possible.

Strange thing about this game - and I was really hooked at the time - is that getting only 2 power ups made it for the optimal fire rate. Above that firepower gets increase but at an expense of a much lower fire rate. A barrage of just 3 "bullets" was much more effective than higer firepower ... try it yourself !

Just adding note, it is what called as "Barrel limit" or bullet on-screen limit. It makes your firepower actually stays same if you are far or shooting from back line, to prevent lag on the performance back then. As a reward, you can bypass this limit since the goal is to make the first bullet fired to disappear from the screen as soon as possible, either by hitting the enemy, object or shooting at forward. This allows your ship to fire more thus actually increases your damage. The reward is maximized when you can shoot the last bullet at the limit at the same time the first bullet disappeared (It is not point blank range). Some modern SHMUPs still apply this rules, for example the recent R-Type Final 2 has it's main player ship can only have 3 bullets and 1 set of missiles on screen at the time. You can not fire any more until the last bullet or missile removed (by any means). There also other reward which the increased hit area. Helpful when you need corner shooting.

No, but this was above average when it came out. 80-85% over all. I don't know of any other shooter that plays exactly like this one. Really love the controls, weapons, and enemy placement in this title.

honestly... I prefer emulating the MegaDrive version than this version... The sound and graphics in the MegaDrive version is kinda close to the Arcade Version.

It's a little bit like Life Force on the NES. Capcom? Konami? I think Capcom and Konami makes the best shooters and other companies copied.

At 9:33 you can see him pass right through the middle of an enemy with his whole ship. There were a couple of iffy spots before that but this one clinched it for me. He's probably playing it slowed down as well. I've seen cheating of this type in other videos more obviously, this one is done to make it look more real. This game is much harder than this makes it look. This was originally an arcade game designed to eat quarters ported to pc engine.
@ra226gaming7 жыл бұрын
Those particular enemies are intangible until they've fully "clamped" together. At 16:03 it looks like he goes through a bullet but that's the only iffy moment--and he so masters the rest of the game that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He certainly pushes the limits of the hit box at 20:41 but I see no cheating. He just knows the game and plays it well.

This is PC Engine. Mega Drive has its own version though. Both PC Engine and Mega Drive do awesome chiptunes in their own right when handled by Japanese audio programmers and have terrible sound in most Western-developed games. I guess you either like chiptunes (old video game music) or you don't.
