Its' great and I like to relax to the soundtrack on youtube sometimes (can't really buy it anymore as far as I know), but I'm playing the game right now (using SCUMMVM to play on Win 10, from GoG) and there are some parts where the louder sounds are distorted badly - and I can tell it's the in-game audio, not my PC. They should have done a bit better job with the PC audio, or fixed it when they updated it to run on modern systems.

I remember playing with Myst as a child, but now it feels like that even I could make a game like that with few models and PPT-s. In that age it was considered extremely good graphics, but be honest the Day of the tentacle with it's stylized art and great animations and really interactive world has aged better and even the revolutionary Age of empires was released in the same year with Riven. Plus I think this game was only able to bring those graphics with a cost of using only a few parts of the screen most of the time with few decent imitated 3d animations or with worse movement than google maps in the 3d space. Yeah. It was creative but now it's just looks like a lagging 3d game. They wanted make a very beautiful game, but the hardware couldn't handle it and they had to sacrifice too much. I don't remember the gameplay and the story so I believe it was pretty good, but this gameplay was ridiculous for me even as a child, and I couldn't play this even now. But I believe it's very good if someone is not against this kind of gameplay. I think the only game that tried the same and was actually very good was Syberia. But it needed much better hardware. Yet, it became a classic that's considered as a beautiful game even now without hindering the fun to this degree like myst.

It saddens me that Gehn turned out to be such a bastard; he seems so wise and reasonable when he speaks. But the fact that when he actually links through to what he thinks will be D'ni, he bothers to stop and pick up his weapon first...that kinda says it all. Too bad, I like a good redemption story, and it would have been nice if, after the 27th or so villager he fed to a whark, Gehn actually started to feel bad and decided to dial back the crazy-meter a few clicks. Oh well, stories need villains I suppose....

Kickass game. As someone who was born well after Myst and Riven were released, I loved this game immensely. I can't pretend I didn't confer with a walkthrough at several points (would have never figured out the numbering system completely or the symbols puzzle in the hideout or the fucking fire marble puzzle good lord), but I can't pretend the game doesn't make it plenty fair for the player. The amount of worldbuilding and storytelling here through just interacting with the world is insane. The way it teaches you the basic 1-10 number system with an innocuous kids game is genius, and there are about a billion other little touches like that all across the game. Probably one of the best adventure games ever made.

this looks like the Riven walkthrough done right. Most people just open the dragon totempole(whatever you want to call it), they don't show how you run into problems, and if you do it right, you find the solution - like the dragon idol; if you go to spike island and get on the right trolley, you stumble upon how to open the dragon idol, and then you can figure out how to get to the top of the cage in the people's island. I always solved the puzzle that gets you to the Moriaty hive, and then solve the Golden dome power up later. From the dialog with Ghen, I see that one should solve the Golden dome and go visit Ghen first! Well, I do see one thing you missed though; if you go back to the Golden dome after awhile, you'll see Ghen at the cage inside the temple, when the big door opens!
@advveo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! When I do these videos, I always try to go through the game in the natural sequence that a first-time player would, rather than just rush through entering all the codes. As for the golden dome thing, I didn't know that! I'll have to go back in and try to see it for myself.

I'm not complaining; it was clearly an aesthetic choice and I agree with it, but it's just interesting to note how the realism of the setting is obviously taking back stage to the player experience here.
