Afterburner Extreme didn't get leaked ever AFAIK and it's been around for years MSI just lifted the restrictions on sharing some versions of it after a few years. Basically no one with access to the XOC tools is gonna leak them because you would completely jeopardize your relationship with Galax that's not a good thing to do if you ever want to use a Galax GPU again.

using two sets of wires is still better, and even if the difference is not measurable so is that of using a 16 phase on this card, so if they want to make you use them I see nothing wrong with that. you are right of course.

if the electrolitycs are connected to ground they are decoupling caps easy to test with a multimeter set on continuity. connect the black wire to a ground plane (any on the pcb) and the red wire on the negative pole of the electrolytic cap. if there is continuity then its a decoupling cap or better a cap used for decoupling. they are there to store current and supply whenever there is a need for it.

The IR3599 shifts the input PWM phase 180 degrees in this configuration, so there's never any power imbalance between the doubled phases - you don't end up with thermal runaway (Rds-on with NTC) like you'd get with parallel FETs where both are switched on in parallel. Valid concern for 4-phase doubling where there's a 90 degree shift though.

Small MLCC are not bad on kHz frequency, they just small capacitance. Some fast DC/DC converters (one's which work in 5+MHz Fsw for example) often found to have banks of large MLCCs on output. Also large MLCCs are expensive (few $ a pop).
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 7 жыл бұрын
Ok so I did a bit more research and from what I've found you can get MLCCs that either have small capacitances and very low impedance at high frequency but high impedance at low frequency or you can get high capacitance MLCCs that do well in the KHz range but they lose all the high frequency performance. So would it be better to say that at low frequencies MLCCs have no performance advantage over the much cheaper electrolytics and polymers?
@xDevscom_EE
@xDevscom_EE 7 жыл бұрын
I almost typed direct answer, but then got better idea. If you want to learn more, why not to answer question "why what you call high frequency performance changes, and what makes it change"? Also PDN design is often tricky business, and one of the best ways to learn it is "turn'n'burn', meaning practical approach. I'd suggest to get oscope, some lab power supply, programmable DC load, buck DC/DC demo board, such as www.linear.com/solutions/4077 and start playing. You can try different caps on output, on input, adjust frequency, play with thermals and you will learn a whole lot more than reading 50 datasheets, believe me ;)

I guess a couple of good reasons for using 3 8-pins that I can think of, assuming they're connected correctly to the VRMs, is that the lower load that's put on them the better it is for them in general (e.g. splitting 300W across 3 8-pins is better than doing it over just one), and there's less resistance. Of course, that's really only for LN2, so the average user wouldn't really care, and as I said it depends on how the 8-pins are hooked up to the card.
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 7 жыл бұрын
The kingpin Edition currently has this card beat in 3Dmark and does it with 2 8pins. That's why spend so much time pointing out that more 8pins doesn't do anything because if it did do something the Kingpin edition would also have it.
@Najvalsa

True true, I'm just trying to find any reasonable reasoning for their triple 8-pin choice, other than it probably being mostly for show.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple here... So the HOF has the best VRM setup. It is 8x2. I believe the Zotacs are 8x2 as well. Is the difference that the voltage controllers on the HOF is better? HIgher switching frequencies?
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 7 жыл бұрын
Lucky for you I finally got the datasheets for the FETs Zotac is using on the Amp's 16 phase and as I suspected they are really bad. Other than that the UP9511 is worse than the IR 3595 and the 2 Proadlizers do not make a good Vcore noise filter. Most GPUs that use Proadlizers also piled on the usual mix of ceramics and SMD polys along with the Proadlizers. I will do a breakdown of the card soonish.

You seem like the right guy to answer this question. SO.... Recently I started getting a 'The VGA card is not supported by the UEFI driver, CSM has been enabled for compatibility' bios error with a 02 q code with my EVGA 1080Ti Ftw3. I can still boot into windows after entering BIOS and disabling CSM, this works about half the time. If the card is above ~42c the GPU won't initialize with the BIOS and I the PC will force CSM and boot right into Windows with no signal to the display. I have to wait for the card to cool off to go through the whole, wait for the error, disable CSM and boot into Windows ordeal. The card runs flawlessly in games and benchmarks, no issues at all, even when overclocked. It just seems to be having issues (I'm assuming with voltage regulation at boot) initializing with the BIOS. Long story short, I vape in my room, my room with poor airflow when the door is shut, and the door is always shut.... Pulled the GPU and the GPU and there was e juice condensation under the backplate and heatsink, pretty well covering the PCB. I stripped the card and gave it hell with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. That did help with the frequency of the issue, but it still will not initialize when it's above ~42c. Do you have any advice? If you could point me to the part of the card that handles BIOS initialization maybe I could give it another scrubbing, and possibly some heat gun lovin'. I just hate to see a 900$ investment, and a card that definitely has a few more years of maxing out games at 1440p before it needs to be upgraded. Anyone else, feel free to chime in. Great video btw, I subbed ^.^

I wonder with that giant cap array if they've got multiple arrays of series caps in parallel across a set of resultant capacitance decades, with the goal of having a ludicrously low ESR and ridiculous impedance along with wideband EM filtering. You see this kinda stuff in some high-end power supplies for RF gear. Although the trace distance to the chip makes me wonder if parasitic impedance nullifies the point of it completely. Interesting design though.

It would be cool if you could do a comparison/review of the Galax 1080Ti OC Lab Edition. They made a few changes to the PCB that make it a lot more XOC friendly and also might make that 3rd 8-pin more useful (without soldering). Although I'm not too sure why they changed the specs of the VCORE VRM capacitors from 4V => 2.5V. If you're interested, let me know if you'd like any pics of the PCB.

As a civil engineer, I have a basic understanding of this type of physics and maths, but I havent dedicated time to read up on it. But I showed your vids to my brother, who is currently studying computer science and electrical engineering and he asked me what type of education you have. I said I didnt know, but it got me wondering. So I allow myself to ask: what is your education? anyways, keep up the vids! love your content! very clear and understandable information. detailed yet concise. one of my favourite youtubers when it comes to explaining tech as you go into detail instead of the regular "do this and buy that!" :D

I've been looking at X370 boards and I really like the strix X370F, it uses IR3555s so it's like what you wanted the K7s vrm to be, should have the second best current capability and best efficiency of any am4 board. It's a shame that it sucks for overclocking otherwise, doesn't even have a readout. I just care for the efficiency though

actually the expression should've been "you have an F1 car with a brick under the gas pedal". because otherwise you can push that to the max on your way to shopping. won't end very well. but you can :D

Ok First off.....I love watching your breakdown videos. Most of the time, I don't understand whatever the fuck you're on about, but when I hear you say ''This is ridiculous'' or ''totally overkill'' it puts a giant grin on my face, and makes my decision on which 1080ti I should buy easier. Secondly, as I mentioned before I have no clue what the hell all this means, but using basic physics, wouldn't an equally spread power input (2 8 pins vs 3 8 pins) have a lower heat output? I know the K|NGP|N beats the HoF in benchmark scores, but what about thermals? Personally, I am more interested in thermal outputs than benchmark scores. THANKS!

But is there a reason they keep extreme overclocking tools away from the public besides scared people will mess up their cards?

Doesn't matter what you do with it after you buy it. it's not the seller who can tell the customer what they can do with their products after they have been sold. If you believe this then every company with a "do not remove" sticker on the screws can void your gpu warranty. People should shame Galax for not releasing the software to voltage control👌

@buildzoid, I recommend watching the EEVBlog guide on Bypass Capacitors kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJStZ4iaed1krMk Anyone else interested, he goes into why they are under all the major ICs and why they are difference sizes / values.

Yeah I've seen that. I just didn't care to go into the specifics of why you want to use a lot of different capacitors for bypass.

True that :) but still overkill for its time. :) not saying that my 980 ti HOF's are a F1 car, maybe Formula 3000 then XD

Here's TIN's POST on this card on his website. xdevs.com/guide/1080ti_kpe/ He recommends a mid-range 1200-1500W gold PSU for each GPU on LN2 and a different PSU for the rest of the system. Power draw was measured at roughly 1260W with peaks up to 1344W running 3DMark11 GT1. Card was clocked at 2600 MHz 1.55V

TiN has a tendency to massively overshoot on the PSUs. With 980Tis people weren't getting any issues with 4000W of PSU for quad GPU X99 setups and KP was using 6000W of PSUs just for the GPUs. Most good 1000W PSU can provide 1100W for extended periods of time without issue at the cost of efficiency and can take short term peaks a good deal higher. TiNs recommendation is 100% non issue but you really shouldn't run into issues with less.

Wow. Much overkill. Imagine if half the VRM components are fake/defective and not actually wired to anything? That would bring the manufacturing cost down to regular card levels lol.
