I just picked up one of these and it is a beast, I'm getting 1485mhz in firestrike at 1.22v and at 1500 it's made it through a run or two as well, all on air and in the 60-70C range. I know there's more performance to be had but I'm definitely needing to read up more on overclocking polaris before I can get there

Yeah I realized after I recorded. The ref 480s at stock average 150-165W and the core is pulling 110 so I was off on my power numbers a bit because I forgot that there's 2 things that pull those extra 40-55W not just the mem.

I think you're over estimating how hot the VRMs get on gpu-only watercooling. My cards with a watercooler stuck on gets the VRM under 70C under all loads I put even at 1420MHz 1.25v with just a fan blowing on them. So the Reference cards would still probably do better than this in real life
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 8 жыл бұрын
the few unheatsinked high power VRMs I've run went straight for 100C and then the thermal protection started to step in.
@Owesome
@Owesome 8 жыл бұрын
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Huh weird. I mean I guess the reference ones do run REALLY hot though now that I think of it. My old reference cards VRM ran at 90C ish with the stock blower still on. But I think that's mostly because the GPU itself ran hot. But yeah actually on my cards the VRM ran cooler after putting the watercoolers on and no heatsinks on them. Previously on the stock cooler it ran at high 70s to low 80s even with it heatsinked to the main fin array.

As it turns out a specific part of Anthem will make my Nitro + pull that 200A at 1480MHz 1.27 V [water cooled] and trip OCP and shut my machine down. I caught it once thanks to micro-stutter and checked HWinfo it showed 198A. Took me ages to figure out why my machine would straight shut off in Tyrant mine.

you should mention that this video is about the 4gb version of the sapphire rx480 nitro which is obviusly cheaper than the 8gb version and has a different PCB. this one has 4gb of SK-Hynix H5GC4H24AJR-R0C 7-Gbps-GDDR5, the 8gb version has Samsung K4G80325FB-HC25 8-Gbps-GDDR5. buy the 8gb version and you will get all 6 phases, this is why it is more expensive ;)

I think the 6th phase was causing extra fan noise and heat. because some people say that the nitro is more quiet recently than it was. the clock speed was also dropped a bit in the newer nitro cards. I'm thinking this would be a great card for water cooling

Okay, what m I missing here? 200amps is enough to run a house and trip the breaker in a standard circuit 5 times over. Do you mean watts, or am I not understand what you mean by "Amps" here?
@kaspars6470
@kaspars6470 3 жыл бұрын
Late answer, I know. But Watts=Volts*Amps Your house runs on 110V or 230V. A RX 480 however runs at around 1.2V. So if you multiply 200 amps with the 1.2 Volts you'd end up at 240 Watts whereas your house (assuming your house is consuming 200A) would end up at 22.000 Watts (or 46.000 for 230V).

I mean, on broken one they were almost all shorted. Is that a part of design? And if no, what could it damage and what can I use to replace them (I can find similar, but not exact same parts)? @taiiat0
@taiiat0 8 жыл бұрын
i'm fairly certain that the R9 Nano is almost identical to the Fury X except it has an Air Cooler instead of a Closed Circuit Liquid Cooler. the R9 Nano has a less powerful VRM set though. they should be very similar (basically identical) except for VRM design. some stuff is moved around, but it looks like all of the same things are on the PCB.

@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 8 жыл бұрын
No idea. You'd have to test. Also if you are going to be switching pastes I would recommend something better than MX-2. I run MX-2 as my expendable paste and use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut when I want to get the best possible thermal performance. Of the top of my head I think the top pastes in particular order are: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (this one is designed to also work really well with LN2 which is why I use it) Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut Gelid GC-Extreme Noctua NT-H1

So this does 40A*5phase=200A at any temperature, but the red devil handles 46A@25C dropping to 34A@80C through 6 phases comes out to 276A@25C and 204A@80C. Now in the powercolor video you say that it's worse than the reference card because the ref can do 66A@25C and 50A@80C (much better than the power color to be sure) but according to my math, the red devil still delivers the same current as the sapphire nitro at 80C so as long as your VRMs are at 80C or less then it's just as good as this card. So for actually hardcore overclocking, do you usually push the VRM into 100C territory, where the red devil will derate under 200A, and that's why it's worse or do you usually cool the VRMs sufficiently to keep them under 80C in which case the red devil is just as good as this card? 'cause if you need more than 200A into the core, then this card won't ever be able to do it, and the red devil (and especially ref card) will happily deliver more than 200A into the core provided you cool the VRM sufficiently. I'm not an expert in overclocking, so I'm just trying to get a handle on why the red devil is so much worse than this, even though it delivers more current up to 80C.

i have a 4+1 vrm rx 480 sapphire 8gb with the memory having an M with a circle around it like nasa kind of has, dont know the memory chips, but these are my vrms courtesy of sapphire's facebook page after i messaged them: www.vishay.com/docs/76784/sic634.pdf i see that i want to keep these under 125 degrees, any recommendations on how to keep them cool after i drop a water block on the pcb, i ordered some 9x9x12 aluminum heat sinks and have an 80mm fan to blow directly on them, will that be enough when i start overclocking it? any way to let me know how good of memory i have without tearing it apart again to find out the memory being used? what kind of potential can i look forward to getting out of this card if i didnt lose or win the silicone lottery but have a mid ranged chip?

How much money do they actually save by omitting that 1 set of parts? By skimming down on 10% of the PCB, they think they can save 10% on all of the cards they sell, making 10% more profits?

The PowIRstages used on this card are about 3$ a piece on Mouser when buying bulk. The inductor and cap are probably around a dollar each.

Sorry to hijack the comment thread, but in your opinion which is the best RX 480 PCB? I don't really have the spare time atm to watch all of your PCB breakdowns, as awesome as they are. Excuse me if this is a dumb question.

no need to actually have 6 phases. you know a more rigorous design than the 1080 vrms. this 5 phase is near enough the same as the 1080
@hmslc8289
@hmslc8289 8 жыл бұрын
taief miah Fair enough, but if the cards are the sameish price then you may as well get the one with all 6 phases.

It won't make much difference.

Sapphire released a statement that the extra phase is disabled in firmware so it doesn't actually do anything.

EpicName Bro Wow, really? I don't understand why they would disable it on the cards that do have it.

me neither but what ever even without the extra phase the card is good.

Hey buildzoid, do higher quality VRMs last longer when not overclocking or are they no different if you stick to the stock voltages with occasional minor overclocks ?
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking 8 жыл бұрын
They do last longer but generally at stock most VRMs will last for ages and ages. The capacitors are usually the first things to give up after 5+ years of use.

I see, thanks. Does the same rule apply with capacitors, where quality = longevity ?
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking

Caps have a K rating. This is how many thousands of hours a capacitor will last at a certain temperature.

people make this misconception all of the time.... that missing phase is an RX 470... sucks that these manufactures do this... because other brands like ASUS and MSI people are posting up RX470 with missing phase powers thinking that it's a 480... i bought a brand new one... like 5 months after all of those wildfire reddit posts about all of these brands doing this.. and when swapped out my cooler... I have all of my powerphases that is advertised by MSI Gaming X....
