I can't believe they scored Bob Evans for this. Man's gotta be busy running his restaurant empire.

Greetings: Twenty to 30 years ago a large portion of the gold and artifacts recovered from the Central America was on display at a facility (I believe a bank) in Columbus, Ohio. My wife and I took our two young daughters to Columbus from our home in northern Ohio. While the gold bars and coins were amazing, the thing that really took my breath away was what looked like several hundred pounds of gold dust poured out on a large table! In addition to the gold and other precious metals and jewelry, the salvage team managed to recover suitcases containing personal items of some of the passengers. In addition to some well preserved articles of clothing, they also found a couple of diaries belonging to passengers aboard the ship. I am 78 years old and have never seen anything like the Central America display in my life!

Wow! What an experience! Thanks for sharing that with us. How fortunate for you… Truly something that most people on earth will never experience anything remotely like - so what cherished memory indeed! I can’t believe that some of the things you mentioned survived in the ocean water all of this time! How is that even possible? Clothing? Diaries? The boxes that this gold was contained in was eaten away by time in water - so how does the clothing and diaries survive?? It isn’t like there was any water tight compartments... I am also curious about the gold dust… I am curious how they salvaged something like that - how it was contained when they found it, etc..

P.S. I wonder how they got into the safe! They mentioned on a second salvage trip where they discovered a safe from the ship… Obviously that would be way too heavy to bring to the surface with just lil’ Nemo… I wonder if they somehow got Nemo to do welding type work to crack open the safe! Lol. I am trying to picture the logistics of this stuff… They didn’t have high end computing power back then (or perhaps the second trip was many years later when computing power was better and they had a robot that was different than Nemo?). I wonder if you remember any of the background story they may have told you at the exhibit you visited.

Please tag a video or provide the video title if it exists for the following. I'm for more infoabout the original discovery and Tommy Thompsons role in that. I can't find anything. Did he really find it? How do they know he has the location but won't give it up? I've recently become infatuated with this discovery so I have so many questions. Any help is greatly appreciated.
