There are ways to clean a coin, and ways to not clean a coin. If a coin is just dirty, that can be delt with. But anything that moves the metal in any way will get a "cleaned" return from any grading service. Nice job on the penny; that's how it's done!

Not sure what it is with Morgans, but most of them seem to have better reverses than obverses.

I guess that's pretty common. I think they are better protected on the reverse, a big clean cheek and open fields on the obverse are great targets. :)

I have taken 4 uncirculated common date Morgan dollars soaked them in liquid jewelry cleaner over night , rinsed them of with water and dried them off with a soft cloth . Then sent them in to be graded along with 16 other Morgan dollars out of the same roll to see if they would notice . This was about ten years ago but they didnt notice it and in fact the 4 i soaked over night were the 4 highest grades . All 4 of them graded MS 64 . The other 16 graded between MS 62 - MS 63 . But these were common dates and mint marks . They grade a LOT harder on key dates and mint marks . I would not recommend doing this or want to take a chance like this with key date coins .
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 4 жыл бұрын
You never know what will happen with grading. I pretty much don't clean or soak any coin anymore. And don't recommend anything like that. I have seen so many beautiful coins destroyed by people trying to "make them better". For past coin collecting generations it was common to clean coins, but as a result we've have to suffer from the consequences of all that "cleaning" . Irreplaceable antiques. :) I think you're smart to be cautious.
@MikeSmith-yo9ch
@MikeSmith-yo9ch 4 жыл бұрын
@@Dr.G Thank you . I only tried that the one time just to see if they noticed . I would not do that again but i have always wondered if they would have gotten buy like that if they had been key dates . You obviously know how much harder they grade key date coins . I know they really graded a 1879 CC that i had extremely hard . I have some friends that are coin dealers and all 3 of them said the 1879CC was a 63+ , i thought so to but NGC graded it as a MS 61 we were all surprised because compared to some of the common date MS 63 Morgans we compared it to the 1879CC looked as good and better than some of the common date ones . I came out ok in the end . I paid $2450 for the coin plus cost of having it graded . A few years later i sold it for $5500 . I wished they would grade coins the same key dates and common dates a like it makes a big difference in value when they low grade key dates .
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Mike that is a huge contention I have with the grading companies. The date, and mint mark should be eliminated from the process. The actual "series" should be the only concern. If all the type coins of a certain date were poorly struck or commonly have bag marks then all of the coins should grade low. I don't go for "well it's very good for that year" stuff. If it's bad it's bad, and if it's good then grade it good. The criterion should be against "all" coins in that series. Irregardless of mint mark or year. There is nothing written that says it has to be one way or another, it's just convention. And I disagree with common convention on this point. People reading the grade shouldn't be expected to know what the majority of the coins for that year of mint mark are commonly like. That's all.... Hahahahah

Bigmouth Al, here Doc looking at the 41S WL, I'm saying no way for UNC. Her left hand is gone, head, hair and bonnet details are flat, the eagle's left leg is smooth sans feathers. Coin looks AU cleaned despite the luster and wheel . I'm committing here! OK, I'm wrong. I swear, I'll never understand grading. Could it be the picture? I mean her whole left hand is gone! -- let alone fingers and thumb. I agree there are minimal bag marks, but the front two thirds of the eagle's left leg has no feathers either! Is that just a weak strike, I wonder? I should learn to shut up.

Isn't that interesting. The grading companies could not care less how "well" a coin in manufactured. When I submitted this coin I was just beginning my numismatic journey, and "like many other collectors" thought this was just a beautiful coin, and the MS64 grade confirmed that. Holy cow. Now after some experience and study, I know that this coin is HORRIBLY made. In MY grading book this coin is a MS60 or 61. The state of preservation is great, but the coin itself came out of the mint obviously "escaping" any reasonable quality checks. The reverse is just as bad as the obverse. The grading companies like to use the term "as made" and say they don't deduct points for technical issues with coins. Well, I happen to think a poorly made coin deserves a poor grade. The vast majority of business strike Walking Liberty coins don't have full details. The area in the center of the coin from top to bottom is always poorly "brought up". The metal doesn't flow to these higher relief areas. It has been that way since the beginning of production. You have to look to the Proof versions to get a reasonably made example.

I send my raw coins to my NGC account for slabbing. During late 2016, I purchased two 1965 Canada S$1, one for $22 and the other for $26. NGC graded them MS 62 and MS 63, respectively. In addition, they were designated as Small Beads Pointed 5; whose price increases thrice fold or more! And back in my younger years at a 1998 coin club meeting, I won 2 auctions: two 1982 Canada S$1 proofs, at $5 each. NGC graded them PF 68 and PF 69. Both were designated as ULTRA CAMEO worth a lot more than $5 plus the slabbing cost. All these were shockers to me. Keep up the great videos!

Agree that it is not worthwhile to submit one coin. Thank you for sharing. I find it hard to see the luster break on the video. The 28-S looks MS 62 to me. The 41-S is downgraded for the strike. Conservation with a little denatured ethanol does not affect luster and surface.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, The 28-S is a tough call David. Mushy strike for sure on the 41-S. But it's amazing how rare it is to see a downgrade because of strike. Many, many horribly struck coins get phenomenal grades as long as they have a little color. It's ridiculous to me. I haven't tried ethanol. I made this video some time ago and now I'm much more hesitant to use any cleaning agents. I've seen so many destroyed coins that I don't like to promote cleaning in any way at the present. Thanks for the nice comment.

Dr. G In one of your videos I believe it was an unboxing of Morgans that you mentioned removing PVC using acetone, and that you let it soak overnight. Can acetone be used to remove PVC buildup on most US coins? Second, what brand acetone do you use? Last, in your opinion, to remove fingerprints from coins which is better to use acetone or e-z-est? I have a couple nice looking coins I’d like to give as gifts, but they have rather distracting fingerprints. Any suggestions. Thanks for sharing your information on your graded coins.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 5 жыл бұрын
Acetone of any brand will safely remove PVC. The problem is that the PVC may have already corroded the metal and you won't be able to correct the damage that has already been done. Fingerprints are, for the most part, impossible to remove. The metal has been corroded in that area and often you can only change the contrast between the fingerprint and the rest of the coin. I would recommend not trying to clean or remove the fingerprint. I understand they may be distracting but in the long run it would be better for the coin to just leave them there. Dipping coins in acid like e-z-est just permanently damages them in my opinion. It's obvious to anyone but an amateur that a coin has been dipped and it often takes many years for toning to hide the unnatural look a dipped coin displays. Thanks for the comment Everett.

Good question. Probably about the same, but you can look at each website, and calculate the difference. If you have mixed coins (world, silver, gold, US) It's going to be expensive. They each require separate orders. If they are all one type it will be much cheaper. Make sure that they are worth grading. It gets expensive. :) Thanks for the comment.

Awesome lot of submissions. Nice New Orleans Morgans, especially that 1895-O. I'm surprised that the 1895-O is only AU53, it should at least be AU58 since It has a lot of mint luster and I don't see too many wear. Of course, I'm not good at grading AU coins. Its a shame that your 1928-S Peace dollar is only a "slider" AU58. The 1928-S is a conditional rarity in high MS grades. I think the 1928-S sells for more than the 1928-P in high MS grades. Nice set! I was thinking about sending some coins into NGC, but I'm having problems choosing shipping and insurance. How do you do that without paying extremely high prices?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Ha, that's how they make half of their money. Each value, or tier, requires a separate order with it's own shipping and handling. At least for PCGS. You have to pay "their" price for shipping and handling(order fee). If you have only a few coins it's very expensive per coin. If your order contains many coins of the same type the per coin fee gets smaller. It's a racket for sure. Maybe you can get together with someone who is sending in coins and jump on his order. Welcome to coin grading. :)

Dr. G Thanks! I wanted to send a Quarter Eagle in for grading with NGC. A local dealer will send the coin in for me for $50, but requires 5 coins for NGC. They will do PCGS with no minimum. I still want to use NGC, but I will probably just choose to go with PCGS through them, since it seems like that would be much cheaper than me sending it in myself.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, grading one coin is very expensive. PCGS gets $35 to grade the coin, so $15 service fee from the dealer is not bad. That included shipping and insurance both ways. Unless you have other NGC coins a PCGS holder is going to make the coin worth more money in the end.
@iccoins6705

How much does it cost to get a coin graded?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Rafael, the price varies on the value of the coin. The grading fee for coins of less that $300 is $20 per coin, from $300 to $3000 the fee is $32. The problem is a $10 handling fee plus shipping and insurance. The price per coin goes down the larger your submission is. Thanks for the comment.

Can you explain to me how to grade my coins?

Pablo, I'm probably the worst person to teach you how to grade :), but PCGS has some good videos on how they grade different coins. Check out their KZbin Channel.

Dr G. Do you just collect these coins or do you sell them via a business?

No Peter, I'm just a collector. I've sold two coins in my lifetime. LOL. But actually I am planning on consolidating my collection and selling some doubles and a few other pieces I don't need. I'm not into coin collecting to make money, I go to work everyday at a regular job to make money. :) I collect coins for fun. The fact that some of these coins have exciting values just adds to the pleasure of collecting beautiful pieces of history. Thanks for the comment.
