It's already hard to adjust to a new town and school so having to adjust to a school in a completely different country must've been super hard. I didn't have the best time in during 2nd-3rd grade since I moved to a different state in the middle of 2nd grade. My teacher was super lenient so we didn't do any studying other than reading and only did basic math. I struggled like crazy in 3rd grade because of that and my dad refused to take me to a tutoring center and such since he thought he could just help me(he's smart but not good at explaining things). I feel bad that majority of the teachers just gave up on you. I don't think teachers like that should be teaching tbh. I don't get why they didn't recommend you some sort of class for returnees if they knew that you didn't speak good enough Japanese to understand the lectures.

Grew up in Ireland, we also didn't have club activities. I found it strange that in Japan, kids were basically forced to take up something. I just liked going home after school and doing my own thing/ hanging out with friends. Also had a crap tonne of work to do in my later years of school, would be pretty pissed if I'd been forced to take up an after school activity Same here with maths: the level at the end of primary school is probably not as high, but maybe it evens out later The auction event sounds fun! We didn't have anything like that, maybe just days where we got to wear our own clothes instead of our uniforms. We all paid like a euro or two, it was also to raise money for charity. But no big events like culture festivals! One thing Japan does right is have mixed schools. Ireland still separates by gender, which is messed up. I don't think it's as common in the UK luckily

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm writing a paper for grad school right now related to how kids with foreign roots experience Japanese schools and this has given me a lot to think about
