Earrings and designers use up the pointers that are cut. A lot of opals want to dry into smaller stones sized rough or have to be cut between the flaws. 15 cents a stone or 15 cents a ct was the rate i was charge pre CCP Hong Kong on one parcel. It was interpreted the size i wanted the smallest pieces cut to 2 mm, was what they slabbed all the big rough to to make thousands of tiny stones for twice the cutting fee instead of the handful of large ones. Not happy. ten or a hundred times that for modern hand cutting

I bought a rotary tool. I had gone to Coober Pedy earlier. Got a couple of jars of chips. Long story. Found a nice piece of shell. (No idea at time). One bit. Worked on it. Put in a clean bowl. Then fed my greyhound. Oops....... LOL! Gotta love opals. Greyhounds and the numbnut that loves both! Greetings from Dimboola in Victoria, Australia.

Hi Nancy! I can speak from experience - after a hundred million years underground, a piece of opal *will* survive a trip through the inside of a dog. It’s just not a fun job to retrieve it. 😬 thanks for watching! 😁
