Last year about this time I was touring England with a Paul Simon tribute show, and the producers were kind enough to let me select a few of my favorites to play alongside the full album Graceland. This is one of those tunes, from Paul's eponymous 1972 album that had bigger hits like "Me and Julio," but I love this one because it shows what a fine guitarist Paul was and is.
Full Equipment & Techniques:
Guitar is a 2008 Martin DR tuned down a whole step - strings are D'Addario 13's and the thumb pick is a Golden Gate.
Recorded live in mid-side with a Vanguard V13 and an sE Voodoo VR2 into an ART Pro MPA II.
Interface is a Zoom UAC-8, Mixed in Pro Tools.
Engineering and mixing: Josh Turner
Filmed on a Canon EOS R with a nifty 50 in Canon's standard color profile.

About Josh Turner Guitar
Joshua Lee Turner is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Josh is best known for his KZbin channel Josh Turner Guitar, where he has been posting eclectic cover performances and original music since he started the channel in 2007 at age 15. Josh now tours internationally in support of his own original music, as well as with long-time collaborator Carson McKee, as the folk duo The Other Favorites. In August, Josh released Public Life, his second full-length album of original music.

@@RustyBrakes I've never once heard a recording from Josh that sounds bad. He used the Zoom H2 for years and made better sounding recordings than most people with thousands of dollars of gear (myself included). Give him an SM57 and a cheap interface and he'll make a beautiful sounding recording.

The word 'talent' just doesn't begin to describe what's going on with Josh. How he is not a world famous star is beyond me. Maybe he simply isn't interested in stardom and just wants to lift what he can do with music to the next level. And the next. And then some. I heard him sing 'The Girl From Ipanema' with Larkin Dodgen. I'd love to see what he can do with 'Minha Voz' by Caetano Veloso.

Paul Simon is a hidden gem of a guitarist - he writes such great melodies and lyrics that people lose sight of how great a fingerstyle guitarist he is. I'll never see Paul this close up but when you play this song I can see what a madman Simon is on the frets. You do him great service, because you've got chops that don't quit. Great singing also. Thanks for this, a buried gemstone that most people don't play or hear very much.

I always come back to this tune. Something so profound about it. "Resonant" is an excellent word. It doesn't so much speak to a specific feeling but a way that a number of different and otherwise distinct feelings can feel.

I like this better than the original. Paul Simon's voice has a sweet, slightly feminine quality that Josh doesn't have. Simon's voice works for musing songs like Still Crazy, but Josh's slightly edgier voice captures the spirit of this protest song and the time in which it was written. Yes, it's a protest song.

I was fourteen years old when this album came out. Struggled to discern the full meaning of the lyrics at that age. I still sing them while walking our dog at 63 years of age. Consider it a great gift to have this music flowing they me. Nice job bringing this to life in a new way. Virtuoso. Paul would be proud.
