A siphon is when the water runs deeper into the cave, making it slightly more dangerous correct?
@Randaddy253 жыл бұрын
I believe it just tells you the direction of flow. Siphon being an inward flow into the cave, making it much more dangerous. I could be wrong though.
@wormhole3313 жыл бұрын
@@Randaddy25 you are correct.
@GuyBryantCaveDiver3 жыл бұрын
Siphon just means the water is going into the cave rather than exiting the cave. Some siphons can barely be detectable whereas others can be torrents depending on the rain and/or river levels. If one is diving into a siphon tunnel then one has to take into account a more conservative air management scheme than one would in a spring tunnel.
@foskco872 жыл бұрын
Most would argue a siphon is a much riskier dive, depending on the strength of the flow. With a siphon you are fighting against the current on your way out... meaning if you ever have an emergency or are running low on air or have some kind of hang up trying to get out it will take you longer and it will take more energy and air. Whereas with a spring the flow of water helps you get out of the cave. The flow of a siphon can also vary depending on the weather or layout of the cave so there is a level of unpredictability/variability. I dont cave dive myself but if I did I would probably not dive a siphon.

how strong is the water flow in the siphon
@GuyBryantCaveDiver3 жыл бұрын
The water flow in this siphon is almost negligible. You wouldn't know it unless you paid very close attention.

What mix were you using? How much deco did you do?
@GuyBryantCaveDiver3 жыл бұрын
We used air in back mounts and Trimix 18/45 in the stage bottle. We switched to the stage bottle at 130 ft then back on air again when we came back up to the 130 ft depth range. BT 75 min, total deco 45 min.

Why is there such a lack of wildlife in underwater caves?
@phillycheesetake3 жыл бұрын
No light = no plant growth = no food chain.
@GuyBryantCaveDiver3 жыл бұрын
There is more wildlife in underwater caves than most people realize. In Florida and Georgia there are cave adapted blind salamanders, crawfish, amphipods, and isopods. Sometimes I see them all over the place in caves. Most life off of dead plants/animals that get washed into the caves via sinkholes or the springs reversing during floods.
@tenzinsmith Жыл бұрын
No sunlight > No plants > No animals. As Guy mentioned though, there is quite a bit of cave-adapted life, as well as "visitors" from outside the cave such as catfish.

Yes, that was a catfish. During the day they will go over 1000 feet back in the caves to rest. Then they will come out at night to eat. I've heard they have such a keen sense of smell which is how they find their way back out in the total darkness.

We put a jump line in. I just didn't video that part of the dive as I chose to focus more on the cave passage than the guide lines when possible.
