Jumping spiders are my favorite animals because of their intelligence, looks and quirks (all those tiny mannerisms - I'm equally drawn to them as to kittens). Out of the jumpers, I like peacocks best because it fascinates me that their good eyesight could select for such tiny but incredibly intricate works of art. And this is my favorite peacock. So it's kind of my favorite animal. And now I've seen it in motion for the first time. What a beautiful rainbow in the dark. Thanks, mr. Otto :D Beautiful choice of music, too!

I agree! Hoppy spiders always make me smile. They are so cute and smart and amazing in so many ways. Almost everything they do is cute and funny, but when I see pics of a hoppy eating another hoppy I want to scold it!

Adding my thanks for sharing these wonderful creatures with the world. I have a DNA-level arachniphobia but as a biologist (and animal lover) I really *want* to feel benevolent toward them - it's a lot easier with these beautiful little jewels and their adorable mannerisms.

Such unique creatures. I remember seeing one for the first time on a railing somewhere, it caught my eye and I came in closer to look at it. I felt like it was looking back at me and I came even closer.. then it jumped on my head and I spazzed out like a little bitch and scared it off :(

Ann M, peacock spiders and jumping spiders in general helped me get over most of my arachnophobia. I learned about different spiders and forced me to get used to how they look. They are sentient beings, trying to get by in this big world.

@annm4833 7 жыл бұрын
CororonSims that's true about jumping spiders helping a person to get past their arachnophobia. There was a very tiny one that hung out on the windowsill of my apartment once and it was kind of cute and so small I left him alone and he didn't bother me. 🙂 And what you say is true, every creature is just trying to get by in the world the best they can, no need to make it harder.
@CororonSims

Yeah! Exactly! Most people see spiders as just things with many legs, maybe creepy, but how many knows that hoppies (jumping spiders) have better eyesight than a cat? They see in full colour. They don't have ears, but hear very good with their hairs detecting sound. And they can think and plan and have a good memory. It has been shown that they can learn by observing and trial-and-error. Hoppies are very curious. Scientists often need to hide when they test hoppies, because blinking human eyes are too interesting... =3

Actually, jumping spiders do see in full colour. They can also move their two big eyes to look around (or rather the retinas behind the eyes). They don't have ears, but they can hear anyway. Sound makes the hairs vibrate and they send auditory signals to the brain. For peacock spiders the colour patterns are important when the males dance for the females, and for most jumping spiders singing is important too, but it sounds more like a motorcycle than a romantic serenade. ^^;
