Kicking Horse Might Be Most Insane Ski Resort in North America (Seriously)

Kicking Horse is a great example of the weaknesses of any "mountain ranking system" you try to come up with. If you go by the luxury ski traveler rankings, Kicking Horse would be ~#75 in North America, probably behind 10-20 east coast resorts. If you go by PeakRankings, it's #6 in Canada. But if you had to compile a list of the best ski resorts for a true expert skier, Kicking Horse is easily in the top 5 in North America and honestly has a good argument to be #1. It undeniably sucks at being a destination resort for the whole family. But if all you want to do is ski, and you like skiing double black terrain, this is the best resort on the continent.

I remember I went here on my first year skiing as they were having a deal for Banff residents. I was so confident cause I was doing blue runs on Sunshine Village. Got to the mountains and I swear probably the scariest time of my life. First run of the day was a blue run from Stairway to Heaven and I fell 1/4 of the way down and just slid to the bottom. Ended up getting humbled and doing green runs for the rest of the day. Been 5 years since that incident and this season is finally the year I come back.

I was on my way to revy from calgary. Made it to golden just as an avalanche took out the highway behind me. The snow was puking and another avalanche was triggered to the west of golden. I was stuck, and the snow wasn't stopping. It took them 4 days to clear the roads. It felt like i had the mountain to myself. It was amazing.

Season pass holder at KH for several years and still is my favourite hill. The terrain, vertical and snow is amazing. I always said a blue run at KH is usually equivalent to black runs at other hills. If you’re a strong skier, this hill doesn’t disappoint.

@@mitchwhite1816 Honestly I suggest talking to locals on gondola rides when you're up there, or find one to ski with. Most of the best runs have names that dont show up on maps (i.e. marlys, comptons), and there are so many to choose from. I do recommend most runs off of redemption ridge north and CPR ridge north for advanced skiers, which are both lift accessible.

i went to kicking horse around 10 years ago. this review is pretty accurate. the day before i got there it snowed at least 16 inches. what this video doesn’t show is that when it does snow, it’s the quality of the snow itself that makes this mountain the best experience in my 35 year of skiing. The lightest, driest, softest, fastest. unbelievable snow. definitely advanced terrain. you should train at a gym for a few months before any big ski/snowboarding trip.

If you are an expert skier, put this on your list. 100% worth it. The gondola ride is just long enough to stop giggling, regroup, and plan the next lap. Much of the terrain here used to be heli terrain. The run back to the gondola is a bit flat but nearly everything else is amazing.

Narrow mountain roads to get there? How wide are the highways to the resorts in America? You travel the #1 highway all the way from Calgary to Golden, that's a pretty wide and well maintained highway WITHOUT frequent closures. Any delays you may have experienced coming this way in the winter of 2022 were because of major upgrades to that highway through the Kicking Horse canyon, a three year project that will be completed by the fall of 2024; you're on the #1 highway coming from Kelowna as well, so pretty great mountain highway from either direction if you are used to driving the mountains in winter. And you are very unkind when it comes to the the Pioneer chair and the terrain accessed from it. Slow-ish yes, but it blues and blacks coming off the lift are fun with sustained pitches and usually not very busy. If you show up on a non-powder weekend and the line for the gondola is crazy, head over the the Pioneer to start your day for an hour or two then head up the gondola. One point you are right on about though is that this is not a mountain to bring beginners to. All the entry level slopes have people funneling from the upper mountain at speed and it can be very intimidating for new skiers.

I don't see how it can be anything else. They just don't have the terrain for a wide range of intermediate skiers. It is experts or rank beginners and little else. No smart investor will want to develop the resort. Which is why there is nearly nothing there and Golden is not ski town.

I was an advanced skier. Usually on a hill one of the best skiers out there. When I moved to Golden I realized the same statues my ego had grown accustomed to at other hills was not true there. I was simply an average skier at this hill. After one season at kicking horse, I have no friends that can keep up with me on the hill and I have skied some lines that would have made a 10 year old version of myself shed a tear of joy. Kicking horses forces you to be a good skier and has some of the most insane terrain out there. There is a reason they hold the free ride world tour there. If you’re a good skier, go to kicking horse, find a local and get them to show the mountain. After your are inevitably beat up from the day and shaking with a mix of joy and terror, remember that the local is sitting there perfectly fine, and they didn’t show you most of their actual good lines. Kicking horse breeds insane skiers. Also, if you are an insane park rat, skip kicking horse. It will eat you alive and there is no park

When I went to Big Sky they bragged about how steep their in bounds terrain was. I chuckled as I knew any ridgeline at Kicking Horse was just as good, or better. Kicking Horse is a paradise for strong skiers. Even if you don't want to hike... Gondola -> Chute, Bowl, Quad Chair, Chute, Bowl, Outrun to bottom. Repeat. Wicked superlaps.

Niiiice, Love the write up here. Going on my 3rd season in a row at Kicking Horse and I think you did a great job describing its flaws but presented its perks beautifully. I think you nailed it when you mentioned that the Hike is a key part of the Kicking Horse experience, in fact, the hiking might be one of the best parts. Love being able to go up there days/weeks after snowfall and still being able to find LONG, fresh lines. Being able to have several big mountain runs back to back without a Heli or without a Touring setup is AMAZING! With this said, I have always considered Kicking Horse to be more of a "Lift Accessed Mountain" rather than a "Ski Resort", and this especially rings true when you consider not only the awesome in bounds terrain but also the incredible Slack/Back Country terrain that is available outside any of the resorts boundaries. Kicking Horse is my favorite resort, even the blues are scary steep. The gondola line moves quickly, especially for singles. On a blue bird Sunday it still seems like you are alone on the mountain. Champagne powder and lots of it.

KH is one of the hardest places for me to say how much I like it. The terrain is out of this world, but the lift setup is... really bad, and hurts the terrain. When I skied it, the top 3rd was nuking and absolutely amazing, the middle third was slushy but soft and I could handle it. The bottom 3rd was pouring rain. If Pioneer was a detach that went all the way to Stairway, and there was a lift that paralleled the Gondola up CPR Ridge, I'd go back every year since I'm within driving distance. As is, I've driven by it multiple times to ski Revy, Sunshine, and Louise.

The Mountain pushes your comfort zone for sure. I loved taking the 15m gondola then skiing for 45+ minutes on the greens all the way down. Then when you're back up top you try a little more, dabble in some tree skiing, and we even did the first black diamond to the left of the gondola... Highly recommend it !

If your that resourceful why not just ignore the parts of the rankings you don't care about. You could easily rescore the list to your own priorities. I think the difficulty of what you are asking for is that we all place weight on different things. Me, I care about snow quality, resiliency, aesthetics and lack of crowds. But I'm happy to ride a slow lift over challenging terrain because I need a break anyway!

Yes. If you're an expert, you need to see this place. It's a mind-blower and unlike any other. Your video captures it very accurately. Skiing cut-up bumps down the bottom half just to get back up to the top does get old. But the mountain terrain and hike-outs are intense.

I skied Kicking Horse back when the lodge was a trailer down the bottom. I remember doing a lot of hiking and skiing some awesome terrain. Up high was powder the lower was crusty. If thee conditions are good it's well worth the trip.

Champaign days, kicking horse is not that scary, no need to fear monger, it is however a great resort and very fun. The only scary thing about the resort is the grizzly bear tbh, and the fact that when it got out they captured the wrong bear.

If you think KH is insane, avoid Revy. I've been to literally every resort in the Canadian rockies and have been riding since the mid 90's and Revy is like nothing else. They don't even mark 10-20ft cliffs and threre's areas on the backside there that have a single rope stopping you from literal death.

im no expert or anything but i just found kicking horse having you make smart choices for drop ins otherwise even medium experienced snowboarders can drop in just not in the middle of the bowls but so much fun. make sure to ride the sides of the bowls they have low spots at the bottom you might have to hike out of . think of sunshine as a snowboarder just be smart where you gotta go fast but you gotta know where to drop if you dont got big balls to free fall for a second

Lifts rating of 3 is a bit harsh. I would give KH a 6 or 7 instead. All you need is the gondola and the rest you hike. An expert’s paradise.

Honestly the one time I did go to Kicking Horse as a wee lad I more remember nearly getting in a head-on with a semi on the treacherous highway than I do the mountain, mostly because I was nowhere near at the level needed to do any of the really fun stuff there (I could carefully handle a few double blacks at like, Louise or Sunshine but I was skiing with a friend who was not at that level)

Was there opening season ,first season of Kicking horse mtn..The old resort was called Whitetooth.. used to be only open weekends and to reach above the tree line..from a slow doulble fixed chair... boot pack.. enter Kh top to bottom gondola riding the tree lines before scores of people broke tree branches was notably remarkable , decades ago already... feels like yesterday... man.. death taxes and kicking horse...

Whats crazy is i actually make a few very brief cameos here! I was down from the Yukon for the Canadian Ski Patrol Ski Clinic. I can attest to this mountain not exactly being beginner friendly - Im from Mt Maichen of Watson Lake YT, a small, volunteer driven, 2 Tee bar lift mountain of 9 runs. We dont have any moguls, only 2 expert runs, and a new terrain park; all in all an extremely beginner-friendly mountain with a gorgeous view of the lake of Watson Lake along with the airport of the same name. Growing up on Mt Maichen, then coming to Kicking Horse? Well, Kicking Horse 100% lived up to its name! This trip was actually my second go at the mountain, and I will be back, despite hardly being a double diamond black expert.

The comments about road/hiway travel into the resort is not totally accurate ..BC hiway 95 is first class from southern end at BC - Idaho border all the way to north end at Golden where the junction of 95 and Trans Canada Hiway 1 meet and Trans Canada Hiway is seldom closed..but on occasion it will be shut down for limited times (1 hour or 2) west of Golden for avalanche control ops. As with any mountain resort .. the last several miles from main hiways can be steep, narrow winding ..but really such conditons are commonon the last leg of any mountain approach. And just for the unfamiliar..there is Panorama Ski Resort about 1.75 hour south of Kicking Horse, via hiway 95 from Invermere BC. Very similar to Khorse and with good night life in the town of Invermere.

I would’ve given KH a 9 for facilities for no other reason than the mountain restaurant at the top of the gondola, the best mountain restaurant in North America IMO. The rest of the resort falls flat in most other categories as the video claims. One major problem is that unless you’re an expert skier you won’t like it. Just too steep and very few blue or green runs. Revelstoke and, to some extent Panorama, have the same problem. That may be fine if you’re an expert but it’s not a recipe for business success and helps explain why these resorts draw significantly fewer skier visits than their more well-rounded competitors such as Lk Louise and Sun Peaks and have never fully realized their planned potential. Families and intermediate skiers pay the bills in the ski resort business, not the freeride bros.

The ski difficulty rating system is nonsense. For years Squaw Valley didn't rank anything at the mountain as double D but when Rob Gaffney wrote Squallywood he used a difficulty scale that ranged from 1-10 with one being one degree more difficult than double D.

At 13:25 this narrow, unmaked path is often windblown and or fogged in. It is also poolry maintained, Once a large section fell off and I came very close to a dangerous if not deadly fall. I informed the staff, they did not care or even put a warning up. The lifts are poorly laid out. When I asked management, they were more interested in selling condo's. I have not gone back. I have ben going to Revelstoke, but lately their attitude has even been worse, thought their ski patrol are top notch.

I prefer the holodeck on Voyager because you do not have to go anywhere and can control the temperature. Many Alien Ships are equipped with a holodeck for leisurely activity. Is VR5 the future or the extinction of humanity? You be the judge!

I don't know guys, I'm a beginner/intermediate skier who has been going for 2 seasons now and I think that place looks really sweet. The fact that their gondola heads straight into a green run that goes swooping 4.5 miles down the mountain sounds awesome and the views you show in this video are fantastic! I think you might be downplaying how much non-expert level guests could enjoy this place. My only hesitation would be that google maps says it is a 7 hour drive for me (which is probably much longer during winter season due to road conditions.)

Most of the terrain at KH is too steep to groom. You will either be riding icy moguls or a flat cat track for half the mountain if you aren't an advanced rider. This is not a good beginner mountain. Lake Louise would be a much better destination and is only 45minutes from Kicking Horse. However, if you want the gnarliest terrain in North America and don't mind earning some turns, Kicking Horse is fucking Amazing!

That green should be a blue because it is extremely narrow and busy. This is an experts only mountain and that run is to get to more expert runs.

KH looks like an awesome mountain for expert skiers but unfortunately all I can really do is blue runs and on a majority of black diamonds i struggle. I just need to get better at turns cause that's where I struggle and once i improve ill go to KH

Stick to the trails, or they may never see you again, also the TransCanada Highway upgrades west of Golden are almost finished, so driving from Calgary is becoming easier.

Good analysis. I'd recommend reducing or eliminating the use of "incredible" and "incredibly," which are being employed far too often these days. They literally mean not believable, and there are plenty of other intensifiers available: extreme, amazing, tremendous, fantastic, to name a few.

Ay I live in Golden (KHMR's town) it's the best terrain and conditions with absolute dogshit oversight from RCR. No terrain in the world is like it but working there is..... a nightmare. Skiing and MTB are absolutely lit so get out here! Plus we have Canada's highest elevated restaurant 😎😎

Title should be: Whistler is the most Overrated ski resort in North America (Seriously). You wait in line longer than you get to ski, the bottom half of the mountain is slush, crazy expensive and the expert terrain is MID. The best resort in North America imo, I'll give a hint: has been given the award "Most space per skiier - world" three years running.
