So regarding Vo2Max, would drafting a player who's produced in lower leagues with a "low" vo2Max be a nice "buy-low" draft pick? My thought process being that Vo2Max is trainable, so if you had a good off-ice program in place, then it could be a nice player to develop.

Vertical jump is bad cuz when skating you not trying keep legs together. You splitting them apart Vertical jump is opposite motions from that. Therefore you need specific training to do well in specific tests. I thought that be obvious to everyone. Also when skating you want keep back bent over. When jumping you want flip your back straight up to add upward force

I think hockey has a culture around strength and conditioning that is kind of shrugging it off as something secondary to skill and just being tough kinda.

Here's the thing about the broad jump test and vertical jump test, skaters don't jump in their sport. They don't really run well, or sprint well, and they don't jump well. To a degree, it's a skill set issue. I don't think it necessarily translates to power expression on the ice rather it's an indicator of overall athletic ability that isn't specific to hockey. Agility wise, they're okay on land because they're agile on the ice but running and jumping are just not natural because of the nature of skating so those things require coaching. I would think the Wingate and vo2max test are more important than jumping for the sport because unless you're a figure skater, you don't jump on ice 🤷‍♀️ this coming from a former competitive figure skater who coached hockey power skating and sports performance training up in MN

Exactly. They training for different motions. Plus broad jumping is not natural. There is huge potential for injury so neurally you are inhibited. Therefore must be trained specifically.

NFL and NBA players are fully grown men when do combine. Hockey players scouted much earlier. They do combine in teens. Plus little time in junior hockey schedule to train. BBall is such an easy game players go home and lift weights for fun. BBall is boring and slow requires no recovery.

Dane this has been a problem with hockey forever. I love hockey, it’s my main sport, but it hasn’t yet been optimized for strength and power compared to what it could be. Something you might be interested in, for many years now a lot of NHL teams have tested their players at the beginning of training camp by having them run a two-mile run with an expected finish in 12 minutes or less. The shocking thing is that most players do not hit this target. Sure, it’s quick, but pro athletes should be able to hit that mark. The hockey world would be helped immensely by getting real strength and conditioning support.

I think the average WR runs about 1.25 miles a game. The average hockey player skates 5. That would probably be a factor on the utility of VO2 max testing.

WR has like 2-3hrs to run that though.

@MbisonBalrog yeah, top tier American football rewards explosiveness over everything. Even overtime where you could potentially witness one team succumbing to fatigue has been set up to end quickly. It's just the name of the game. I think the average VO2 max in the NFL is high 30's low 40's but there's definitely players who are in the 60's maybe 70's. Hockey is right below rugby which is right below soccer for endurance.

@@drhjhulsebos only cuz NFL season so short they have plenty of offseason to train up VO2

@MbisonBalrog the game still probably wouldn't reward it the same way as it does power and impulse. 40 seconds of recovery for 15 seconds of play. There's 130-140 total plays per team in a game. Assuming that offense gets half of those, it's about 15 minutes of high intensity over the course of 2-3 hours per player if there aren't substitutions. It's a great game, but you don't need to run a marathon. I suppose theoretically, offense could just hurry setting up over & over to challenge the defenses cardio reserve, but it's also a game of execution.
