My granpa lived in communist era and same done to his rabbits. We had a squirrel about 2 years named Benny that we raised from a baby and eventually he bit me. It was just time for him to go, but we couldn’t seem to find the right time to get him used to being outside, so he got a bit wild. When i went to the doctor, they said rabies test wasn’t necessary because chances he had rabies was super slim because we got him so young. We released him the next day, and now he lives in our backyard. Our cat watches him out the window.

The State just wanted to take away their income because they believed that this couple were profiting and gaining fame through the squirrel when the proceeds were, in fact, used to fund the animal shelter. New York is one of those states that have a ton of red flag laws, hot lines to call and make reports. Don’t matter if the report is false, they’ll come in and do this. I was injured in a car accident and had to stop working and now I look after my 83 year old mom and we’re both on a fixed income. My brother unfortunately lost my mom’s house bcuz she co-signed for my brother’s house and he defaulted so the bank took it. It was supposed to go to me, but now we pay $2100/month on rent instead of next to nothing bcuz the house was almost fully paid off. So I fully know what you’re going through, but like you said no matter what we may be dealing with you can’t help but feel for others who are also hurting. What they did to Peanut and the raccoon was completely unnecessary and so cruel. They were probably so scared. I hope they can keep their nonprofit going through all of this. I really hope you don’t lose your house and things turn around for you. Nobody deserves to live with stress day after day.

I don't know about monetary assessments, but the way that everything was turned over in their home and the excessive amount of time it took for them to apparently locate and secure two animals is incredibly questionable -- on the surface, it definitely appears like an overreach of a search warrant. The fact that the agents didn't wear bodycams and were so concerned about the homeowners having a video surveillance system makes their actions look that much worse.

They were in illegal possession of a wild animal which is animal endangerment and animal abuse. All wild animals squirrels and raccoons alike are property of the United States government fish and wildlife. They have the legal authority to euthanize any animal that is a public safety risk. In this case these animals were not properly immunized in a domesticated environment and they did not have the proper permits. They are lucky they haven’t been criminally charged with animal endangerment, unlawful possession, and animal abuse. It’s the law.

OMG I just had my baby squirrel takin from me . Broke my heart she was my best friend. I posted a really cute video of her and some freaking busy body who had nothing else to do in a world, going to shit. They were down my street watching my house with binoculars for my very loved and well takin care of baby squirrel. It's pitiful. I was going to release her into the wild in the spring. I got up with her every 3 hours to bottle feed her for a month and a half then weened her to a healthy diet. I was all she knew I was mama. I am so heartbroken. I live in Napa, California . So sorry for your loss
