Um. Here's a story. Somewhere around two or three years ago, I felt like reliving my childhood. So I looked up Putt-Putt videos and found this. I thought kind of half-paying attention and KZbin autoplayed to the Hatoful Boyfriend video. I thought it sounded weird, but then KZbin suggested Cry's Hatoful videos, so I watched that and loved it. While looking for more pigeon videos, there was one with a thumbnail of Sakuya in a cheerleader outfit. This video introduced me to Team Hatoful, which pulled me further into the Hatoverse, destroyed my emotions, introduced me to Pretty Cure Magical Girls, and taught me how to draw anime eyes. Many months later, they play the Undertale demo. A year after that, Undertale comes out. So I have come back to this video to ask for my sanity back.

I'm not sure if the Putt-Putt games are actually any good, or if I just love them because I grew up with them... I love a lot of the other Humongous games too. By the way, if you didn't know, Humongous was founded in part by Ron Gilbert, the guy who created Monkey Island... these are basically intended to be LucasArts-style adventure games for children. Since I grew up on these, it's not all that surprising that when I got older, puzzle adventures (including the classic LucasArts games) wound up being my favorite genre.

Samantha Port I played them as a kid, too. I liked them (and Pajama Sam) and had fun playing them back then, so that means they're good games. They entertain their target audience. That's all that really matters.

+LunarD3A7H I think that's simplifying things a little too much. Personally, I think the quality of kids' entertainment is something that actually matters. Kids are entertained by a lot of garbage, because they tend to be easily amused and aren't very picky (usually - some kids are more choosy than others). So sure, a game might entertain kids, but does that mean it's actually _good_? Not necessarily. What my original comment was musing about is whether or not the Humongous Entertainment games are _objectively_ good, or whether I just still enjoy them as an adult because of nostalgia. I think the best kids' entertainment is the stuff that even adults can be entertained by. It shows actual effort, thought, and creativity, rather than just slapping something fast and easy together because "kids will watch/play/read/eat/etc. anything." And, again, this is something I think is really important. The entertainment children take in plays a huge part in shaping the kind of person they grow up to be, and often, the kinds of things they'll enjoy when they're older. A lot of people are far too dismissive of the quality (or lack thereof) of kids' media. I think the quality of what we show our kids plays a bigger part in their lives than most people give it credit for. Sorry for the rant, I just get frustrated by that dismissiveness. I'm really interested in children's entertainment and I think it's very sad (and even kind of bad) that so much of it is sloppy, terrible, and given no effort just because the people making it assume kids will eat up anything put in front of them regardless of quality, and doesn't take into consideration that maybe it'd be better for everyone if the kids really, _truly_ enjoyed it instead of it just being something to distract them and shut them up for half an hour.

Samantha Port I think it's an adequate amount of simplification for the topic of video games. If a targeted group enjoys them, that's all that matters. In this case: children. Humongous Games' makes enjoyable, interactive video games. Stimulation is one of the most important things in a developing mind. The child's brain needs to constantly be interacting and engaging with new things that will entertain them and challenge them. Sure, the "puzzles", if you want to call them that, in their games are not too challenging, but they do require a bit of thought and make them perfect for younger children as a source of entertainment and engagement. Therefore, I would argue these games were not just good, but great. They learn new things about the world (just the first step, like learning about zoos and the fact that they have animals in them), they learn basic problem-solving and most importantly they do it in a way that will keep their interest. I'd also like to state for the record that I am still somewhat entertained by games like Pajama Sam. Am I a little old for it? Sure. But it's still fun.
