This video examines the mind of Pearl as we saw in the episode "A Single Pale Rose." While the big plot twist that Rose Quartz was actually Pink Diamond stole the focus (as it should), there was plenty of amazing Pearl content for further character study of her and her tragic past. So before I discuss my thoughts on the Pink Diamond reveal, I want to dedicate a video to Pearl's presence in "A Single Pale Rose."

I loved how Past Pearl was more soft spoken, unsure, gentle, and sensitive. As you go back through her layers you see the transformation to present day... simple clean lines of her clothes, her hair more severe (her past hair was more carefree and disheveled), her voice more sharp and commanding like a school teacher or mother, having to be correct( OCD, no room for argument), a tight control of her emotions and actions. It's a fascinating change!

Here's my biggest problem with Pink's actions though. It seems everyone forgets that last speech Blue Diamond made to Pink before she staged her own shattering: "But this is what you wanted! You _begged_ us for a colony of your own! And now all you want to do is be rid of it. First there were too many organics, then their cities were too difficult to dismantle, and now these Crystal Gems? We're tired of your *excuses* Pink!" Pink never came right out and spoke up for Earth. She never once put her foot down and told her sisters directly that she didn't want to colonize the planet because she wanted to spare the lives there. She only made excuses as to why it was _too hard_ to colonize and wanted Blue and Yellow to drop it _for her._ That was notably cowardly to me.

her actions were not that cowardly there's no way in hell the diamond authority would back down on earth because of organic life in fact just impyng that might piss them off enough to invade it themselves so instead pink tried appealing to them pragmatically wich didn't work causing her to come up with her plan
@lucasmartinez5703

Pink Diamond probably knew on some level that Blue and Yellow Diamond weren't going to understand why she feels the life on Earth needed to be protected. So "putting her foot down" would more likely just give her sisters reason to colonize the Earth even more then they already did. And the implied nature of her relationship with them further reinforces why directly opposing them would only make things worse. Yellow sees her a nuisance. Blue treats her like a baby. Neither take her seriously. I feel it was less cowardice and more feeling fresh out of any real option. Which is why the fake shattering plan was most likely a last resort then anything.

Another fun fact Hibiscus syriacus, also known as the Korean rose, is the national flower of South Korea which as someone else pointed out is where PD was shattered. The flower's name in Korean is mugunghwa (Hangul: 무궁화; Hanja: 無窮花). The flower's symbolic significance stems from the Korean word mugung, which means "eternity" or "inexhaustible abundance". This leads me to believe the hibiscus meaning 'eternity' represents the promise between PD and Pearl, PD forced Pearl into secrecy and took this secret to her grave leaving Pearl forever unable to speak of what happened ever again thus making this an ETERNAL promise/secret between them, and the 'inexhaustible abundance' could mean the abundance of Pearls unwavering faith, devotion and love for Rose despite her not always agreeing with or approving of what Rose does or asks of her but accepts it because 'Rose always did what she wanted' and just blindly trusts her So 'eternity' represents the eternal promise/secret forced on Pearl by PD only further highlighted by PD placing the flower in Pearls hair shortly before giving her the order to never speak of this again, and the 'inexhaustible abundance' represents Pearls undying love for Rose no matter how many years go by or how bad she was hurt by her she still remains wholeheartedly devoted to her and now her son

I really like what the episode does for Pearl. It adds so many new layers to her past actions; all this time she was still partially only playing the role of “renegade Pearl”. Sure, she rebelled against her society and acheived things nobody thought possible (or proper) of a Pearl, but a part of her was still obeying the prime objective of “be loyal to your diamond”. I’m sure Pearl justified it in some other way than blind loyalty but we can plainly see from all the secrets and communication problems within the CGs in general that all of them are guilty of following Rose blindly. Garnet was told not to ask questions and Pearl was forced to never answer them. It’s no wonder that Pearl broke down so badly with Rose’s death - her purpose was suddenly gone and all of her sacrifices (her society, her purpose, her CG friends, her own morals) for the sake of the life they were meant to have “together after the war” were rendered meaningless. Pearl was also held hostage by her silence, unable to be completely honest with anyone but Rose - not only was she physically incapable of reaching out for support (not that she would have ever been able to bring up the topic with Rose still around), but she was made an accomplice to Rose’s lies, meaning that, even if she had wanted to tell the truth, finding a way to do so would have been social suicide for Pearl. It’s a testament to how much she has grown that she not only wanted Steven to know the truth, but also that she knowingly brought him back to the real world while the other CGs were there. Had Pearl really not wanted them to know, she could have easily gone to her room or something before bringing Steven back (he was the one to text her after all), but instead she takes the opportunity to reveal the truth to everyone.

I agree with most of this, but I’d like to expand on one point. Pearl’s have to obay their owner. But obedience is not the same as loyalty. Obendience is an action, loyalty is a motivation. The Crystal Gems are the proof that gems aren’t robots that follow their programming, they have the power to choose, and rebel. It’s important to remember that Pink Rose asked Pearl to join the rebellion, not ordered her. She explained the difficulty, the consequences, and asked Pearl to join her. And when coming up with the shattering ploy, she asked her, tried convincing her. We know Pearl pretty well. We know her personality, her ideals, what she fought for, how she improves herself. And we know she loved her Diamond. I think that goes a long way in helping us understand what kind of person Pink was. Pearl wasn’t just obendient, Pink was someone she wanted to follow, someone she’d give up everything for. Admittedly, there is an uneven dynamic of master and servant. And her loyalty did have consequences. But I think we’ve seen enough to know Pearl had her own agency in the relationship, and what happened.
@MontyBoosh
@MontyBoosh 6 жыл бұрын
Oh no, don't get me wrong - I don't think Pearl was following Rose because she was ordered to, or even because she necessarily thought she had to. But I do think that their interactions and her relationship with Rose weren't entirely healthy (regardless of anyone's intentions). Pearl grew up in a society where her worth was dependent on what she could do for others (far more than other types of gems whose contributions were for the good of gem society rather than any individual), and we can see even now that Pearl sometimes feels useless if she's not following direct orders. She feels obliged to work for others and bases her own sense of worth on the satisfaction of the people around her. Don't misunderstand - this is a pressure that comes wholly from her and it's certainly not Rose's fault any more than any other individual Homeworld gem. But, with the revelation that Pearl was made for Pink/Rose, there is a sense that Pearl continued to show her love and devotion (as genuine as I'm sure it was) in the same way she'd been raised to - via service and subservience. And Rose, being the clueless and frankly immature person she was, probably didn't entirely pick up on this - she certainly doesn't seem to treat their relationship the same way Pearl did (I mean she outright laughs at Pearl's blatent jealousy in Story For Steven, and clearly either doesn't pick up on or care about Pearl's ulterior motives in forming Rainbow Quartz). It explains why Pearl (in Friend Ship) still felt like she was useless on her own, despite technically having been a free gem for several thousands of years, and why she was so hard hit by Rose's secrets. One line in It's Over Isn't It really stands out: "Who am I now in this world without her? / Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her." You don't call yourself "petty and dull" for simply doubting an equal - there's a definite implication that Pearl feels unable to criticise Rose which, again, is not a healthy basis for a relationship.
@arellajardin2323
@arellajardin2323 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, yeah, I completely agree with that. I’ve always thought the relationship was “unhealthy”, or at the very least, doomed to fail. Pearl’s utter devotion was exactly the reason Pink Rose never loved her as completely back. Pearl never challenged her as a person. Their dynamic didn’t change or grow. Rose played at romantic love, with Pearl and many men, but she didn’t actually understand it. It was just a beautiful game. Even with Greg, the relationship was just something fun to do, in the beginning. It wasn’t until Greg challenged her, pushed back, demanded they talk and share, that Rose grew to understand true love. Something Pearl never could have achieved in all her fawning over Rose. Ironically, it was Pearl pointing out that Greg was just a boy toy, that motivated him and lead to her losing Rose.
@MontyBoosh
@MontyBoosh 6 жыл бұрын
You took the words out of my mouth there Arella. Honestly, I know a lot of people were disappointed at the idea of Pearl/Rose being a master/slave relationship (and therefore riddled with uncomfortable and questionable implications), but to me the idea that this kind of unhealthy relationship would develop *naturally* without any real explanation or excuse was always even more horrifying. It makes so much more sense this way. Besides, neither party is responsible for the underlying issues making their relationship an inherently difficult and imbalanced one - Rose didn't ask to be made a Diamond just as Pearl didn't ask to be made a servant. I think, had Rose been a little more perceptive and mature, and Pearl a bit more assertive, they could have made it work if they really wanted to, but in the end neither of them were in a position where they could recognise the problem for what it was and put in the effort needed to resolve it.
@arellajardin2323
@arellajardin2323 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. I’ve been troubled by people declaring that everything Pearl ever said or did is now invalidated, that the fact she was once owned by PD means she never really rebelled or was just manipulated with no agency of her own. Admittedly, master/servant relationships are complicated to write properly and riddled with disturbing pitfalls. It doesn’t help that a lot of trashy romance novels or porn/hentai, fetishize the wrong aspects of a domanant/submissive dynamic. But I don’t even necessarily see Pearl and Pink in that way. Pink probably meant the best for Pearl, but their social standings were always going to be an obstacle. Something they never truly succeeded in overcoming (at least romantically. Pearl did consider herself free and owned by nobody for thousands of years while with Rose).

The bit with the numbers was a nice joke, but it also gives us a bit of hope for Pearl's recovery. We've just seen Rose Quartz is an extremely gray character. Servant/master relationship was very taxing on Pearls psyche (especially when Pink gave Pearl her last Royal Order). The only relationship Pearl's ever had was a bit unhealthy to say the least, so it's soooooooooo nice to see her slowly getting better, allowing herself to meet new people.

Loved your analysis! One thing that struck me as a little strange is how, even though we'd just seen Pearl questioning her decision to follow Rose for the first time... When she and Rose, are about to stage the shattering, the music sounds uplifting, as if this is a good thing they're about to do. I'm not saying it was a bad choice, just one I don't entirely understand. I don't think it meant that it was a good thing, after all, at least, not entirely... Maybe it had to do with Pearl finally being able to tell Steven? I went back and listened to "It's Over, Isn't it?" shortly after I watched this, and this time, the line, "Who am I now in this world without her? Petty and dull with the nerve to doubt her." With that song, I'd always thought Pearl didn't have any reason to feel bad about doubting Rose, but now? Wow. It doesn't feel like she was simply blinded by love, or even like hero worship. It feels to me like, even though Pearl's love was romantic, she loved and trusted her completely, the way a child loves a parent. Even though I think Rose didn't do the best at honoring that love... I mean, I don't think she even knew how, but... Anyway, the point is, I feel like there's something really pure, innocent, and beautiful about Pearl's feelings, misguided though they may have been.

That's an interesting bit of insight from the Crewniverse about how Pearl's are literally "programmed" to obey their masters orders no matter what. It's got me thinking, if Pink Diamond was the one who placed that command on Pearl, doesn't it stand to reason that she is also the only one that can lift it. Since Steven is technically Pink Diamond, that would mean Pearl has no choice but to obey and answer Steven's question, but at the same time Steven is also not Pink Diamond, so she cannot tell him, otherwise it would go against her Diamond's order. It could be possible that this created some sort of contradiction in Pearl's programming, forcing her to stop herself from telling Steven even though he has the gem of the one who placed the order on her. In order to lift the command and fix this contradiction in her programming, Steven had to go inside her gem and learn the truth about his identity in order for the command to be lifted. When it came to keeping it a secret from the other Crystal Gems, all Pearl would have had to do was lie or make something up, but it was only around Steven that she literately had to cover her mouth and force herself not to say anything. If she forcibly covered her mouth whenever any of the other gems asked her about something relating to Pink Diamond, they would have noticed that something is wrong a long time ago. Her forcibly covering her mouth only happened when Steven was around because he is her Diamond.

Darth Goku Garnet believed the lie, but from Pearl's reactions it seems like the shocked look *and* muting herself is a normal reaction. She doesn't blink when Pearl interrupts herself. It's implied that this happened before and why Garnet was defensive of Steven questioning Pearl.

I liked this episode (which I know is an unpopular opinion). I think it also reveals a lot of flaws in Rose that we're hinted at but not really explicated. She's fairly selfish. Although this generally manifests itself as something good, like bring Steven into the world, it brings a lot of suffering to the people who love her, like Pearl and Greg. Likewise, with the power imbalance mentioned, she almost uses pearl's love and worshipping. Although I don't think rose nor pearl thinks that this dynamic is negative, from a side view, it seems fairly unhealthy

yes I agree, I think this whole reveal puts Greg; and Rose's dialogue in "We Need to Talk" in a new fresh light.....Where Greg yells "can you talk like a real person?" and she goes "I'm...NOT a real person...?" ...wow. That takes on so much new heaviness. She's up til this point seen Greg like she sees everyone else, underestimating it, just 'cute' and enjoyable company...not really able to feel empathy however, as he's just a human under her nose. But Greg DEMANDS respect and her to listen to his feelings. She'd never been told that before by anyone in her life. So Greg is the first person to ever teach Pink that Love is not just about having a good fun time with someone briefly for a while,...it is about taking the hardships and disagreements into account, and really listening to the other person's feelings and working things out with them together so you bond closer. It's a beautiful thing and it is both kinda sad she is revealed to be a fake but still doesn't take away the fact she also is still a Diamond who evolved into a kind hearted character and I haven't seen evidence at any point that doesn't say Rose didn't feel ANY guilt or responsibility for the chaos that followed her 'demise'.

Pearl is such a tragic character, which has always been known, but this solidifies just how sad she is all the time. The "why did I do it" line as she stands in the barren battlefield means that she blames herself for losing the war. she blames herself for the corruption attack and all of her friends being lost in the war. And in some defense, she could always think "well at least I got rose out of this" but then Rose chose to turn into Steven, meaning Pearl then lost the one moral justification she had for going along with the assassination plan. Now all she has is that regret, and no Rose. She may have gotten Steven out of all of it, but that doesn't change the fact her subconscious still believes everything is her fault. You could see it on Pearl's face that she did not want to go along with the plan, but Rose/PD flattered her saying "live here with you" and Pearl's emotions overrode her better judgement. She knew what the diamonds were capable of, but she went along with Rose/PD's naive belief. Ugh poor pearl

Also, this is my favorite Pearl episode by far.

You mentioned that way pink diamond sees the shattering is something that will free them while pearl thinks its a bad idea. Well we can see it when they fuse to make Rainbow Quartz. They have two sets of eyes but everything else is humanoid that basicly sums that they dont see things the same way...

Interesting! I don't know if the writers intended it that way, but it's certainly a valid interpretation. Especially considering that the two sets of eyes were looking at Greg in two completely different ways in that scene.

I think the memories serving as Pearl’s personality is actually very much like the mechanism in inside out, where “core memories” establish “islands of personality”. Each of these major events shaped how Pearl is today. I think its very likely that “surface Pearl” was created by Pearl when Steven was born. That the love Pearl developed allowed her to push her memories aside and create a robotic facade for a kid with no knowledge of the horrors of Pearl’s past, and surface Pearl reflects that, devoid of “personality”.

I want you to know that the flower Pink Diamond gave to Pearl is called “The Rose of Sharron” it’s the symbol of South Korea. It stands for the unfaltering and firm spirit of the Korean people and how even if you think we can’t, we’ll always find a way.

It kinda reminds me of how Inside Out handled this stuff. They said that key memories in a person's life would form huge facets of their personalities. In that movie, they were represented by different islands, but in SU those key moments exist in a kind of limbo in Pearl's head.

I was under the impression that the war did end shortly after the shattering PD (also, yeah, the only success was saving the humans) The show has always been very vague about the timeline of the colony and the war, with us knowing the war itself was roughly a thousand years. But here’s the highlights. 1. Pink gets colony. 2. Pink falls in love with organic life, asks to abandon the colony, is rejected. 3. Pink comes up with the rebellion idea to have an excuse to leave, initially fights war with just her own troops. 4. Blue and Uellow again refuse to let her quit, and personally intervene in the war, escalating the atrocities. Pink Rose tries to scare Blue off in The Answer. 5. Blue gives Pink the idea that the colony will end with her, fakes death. 6. The Diamonds pull out, cause corruption. I’m trying to remember if they ever said the war kept going after Pink was shattered, but I don’t think they ever did.
@FlyingPotatoChickens
@FlyingPotatoChickens 6 жыл бұрын
Well, they were clearly still in the middle of fighting when the corruption nuke hit, judging from the flashback in this episode. Though I also think it was only for a brief period of time. Maybe long enough for Yellow to insert the Cluster before leaving? There's no way she did that afterwards, as Rose would've known.
@arellajardin2323
@arellajardin2323 6 жыл бұрын
We know not all Homeworld gems made it off planet when they launched the corruption beam. Whomever they were fighting were stragglers. But it’s still vague as to how long after PD’s shattering that it happened. There’d have to be reports, an evacuation order, etc. it wouldn’t be immediate, but there’s no indication that the war continued for a long time. You bring up a good point, when did Yellow initiate the Cluster. It’s safe to assume she gathered shards during the war, it makes no sense to come back later and gather them. As big as it is, the shards were collected over the entire length of the war. But, did she do it before or after PD “died”? If the colony was finished and the planet hollowed out, they could move the Cluster later through the holes in the crust.
@FlyingPotatoChickens
@FlyingPotatoChickens 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, besides those who simply got stuck on Earth, I can also imagine some gems also decided to keep on fighting, compelled to do so in honor of Pink. On the Cluster: In It Could've Been Great it's mentioned that the Cluster was inserted via the Beta Kindergarten, so that would narrow down the timeline for its creation to sometime after the midway point of the war (since that's when Beta was made). That also seems to be the point when Blue and Yellow started intervening more directly in the war, as opposed to just observing the colony's progress back when the rebellion seemingly consisted of just Rose and Pearl (circa The Answer). So maybe they gathered shards and started the fusion experiments early on ("inspired" by seeing Garnet come into existence), storing them in the Prime Kindergarten (as shown in Keeping it Together), but then after Pink was shattered they took the rest of the shards and inserted them all under Beta during that brief timeframe before evacuating, leaving them to incubate as The Cluster as one final punishment to Earth.
@arellajardin2323
@arellajardin2323 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. That timeline makes the most sense. They started expiriments during the war, but initiated the Cluster after PD was “shattered” as revenge.

Blue Diamond tried to recover the colony after Pink's demise, as we saw in "The Answer," no? Explains why Garnet didn't know what Pink Diamond even looked like, as she came to the planet after Pink was gone (this is based on the image of PD in Garnet's brief story in "Gemcation" looking like the PD mural rather than the real PD). Edit: Okay yeah, I take this comment back, I was totally wrong. One thing "Your Mother and Mine" actually did serve to do (despite me badmouthing it for being a recap) is give a decent chronology of events (even if we knew those events already). So Garnet most certainly joined before PD was shattered. And the Diamonds pretty much went "fuck it" to the Earth shortly after. Arella Jardin in this comment chain seems correct.

Alternate video title: Yo Dawg, I heard you like Pearls. (A Single Pale Rose Analysis). Joking aside I really enjoyed this video, and liked how very in depth you were pertaining to Pearls psyche and all of its portrayals of these cases in this episode. I also agree that while the mindscape of Pearl being based on Freud’s ideas of Id, Ego and Superego would have been an interesting touch, the chosen method worked better for both storytelling purposes as well as a more believable look on psychological cases of Gems, given how a good amount of Freud’s Psychological and Philosophical ideas don’t really hold up too well in the modern day. As for the multiple Phone numbers Pearl has stashed in her gem? Maybe she either had to wait till she figured out how to use the phone before calling them. Hence the scene with Amethyst at the beginning of the episode. Or more hilariously, she’s trying to break Greg’s record of broken hearts in petty spite. Great video, can’t wait to see what’s next. And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go listen to some Pearl Jam.

+Uncivilized Elk Instead of the more common Freudian psychoanalytic model, I think you might be interested in Abraham and Torok's concept of "endocryptic identification". A&T don't concern themselves much with the I/Over-I/It paradigm of Freudian psychoanalysis. Rather, they focus on the effects of introjection, incorporation fantasy, and encryption of lost love-objects in matters concerning ineffable secrets. (Particularly in relation to Pearl's secrets and compulsions, their work would provide an interesting approach) If you're interested, the relevant essay is called "The Lost Object: Me--Notes on Endocryptic Identification"--PDFs of it float around in various places (and one could be passed along, should you so desire), but the book that contains it is also a valuable asset to literary analysis. ("The Shell and the Kernel: Renewals of Psychoanalysis).

Pearl was one of my favorite things about this episode, because it really and truly gives context to some of her actions. I don't get the people who are mad that she used to be Pink's pearl, because that is literally no different from what we knew before, that she used be Rose's pearl. The difference is that it makes more sense, and that it adds more nuance to her devotion to Rose.

After seeing this episode, I think that the Gem's rooms are partially based on the inside of their own gems. For Rose/Pink, it was a pink, grassy plain with wide empty space and her room is similar, only with clouds. Infinite space with infinite possibilities. For Pearl, in the few episodes that we see her room, she has a sorting system similar to the one in her mind. I can only assume that the same is true for the others. Also, for the inner Pearls, I feel like that they're not just suppressed emotions, but her thoughts and feelings that make up part of who she is. Her regret and doubt is as much a part of her as her love of organization. They're just centered around those events because they are what triggered them.

It feels very refreshing to have a reviewer understand the mixed bag of problems people have and still enjoy the show, and by reviewing it with ALL of your feelings, making it more enjoyable to viewers who feel conflicted over if this show is "good" or not. The way I saw the “surface “ pearl in this episode was in more of a way to mask her problems. Pearl, of course, is know for her tidiness through out the series but I was thinking that this surface pearl was the embodiment of a mask for the mess under her and as some sort of coping, she chose to block out the bad and organize her life instead of the mess of memories she initially dealt with.

Before the Diamonds sent out the corruption wave they sent out an evacuation order. Rose didn't even prepare for the counter attack. As a leader she should have been prepared for something like this. Whether she anticipated the attack or not is beside the point. You prepare for the worst for your soldiers.
@MontyBoosh
@MontyBoosh 6 жыл бұрын
For starters we don't even know if she was a good leader; before her "shattering" she was controlling both sides of the battlefied, it wouldn't have been difficult to win even against overwhelming numbers in that case. As for not preparing for a counterattack, Pink comes across as very immature - we know she never understood humans until meeting Greg, and we know she never caught on to Amethyst and Pearl's issues despite the thousands of years she spent with them - I don't think it's inreasonable to think she truly didn't understand her fellow Diamonds and genuinely thought they didn't care about her or the Earth. Pink wholeheartedly believed that the only way to stop the completion of the colony was to no longer be there to rule it (as Blue states in the previous episode), and more than that she took Blue and Yellow’s reactions to her “failure” as a sign that they were more concerned about her success as a Diamond than her own well-being. Shameless plug for the two analysis posts I made shortly after the episode, although my position has evolved slightly since then: ignissa.tumblr.com/post/173712314124/on-pearl-rose-and-unsettling-implications ignissa.tumblr.com/post/173763765459/pink-diamonds-situation-can-hit-extremely-hard

Yeah, i did not say i knew exactly what was wrong, i just said i felt like that kinda made the most sense to be wrong with it. Sure its kinda dumb to have one kind of gem only be capable to do one kind of job especially with the limited number of gems there possibilly could be and the kinda unlimited number of jobs you could do but this seems to be one of the rules of that universe. Maybe there are even Pearls which don't serve the diamonds but other higher gems. But when Steven asked Pearl about her backstory she always was the least revealing one of the crystal gems. I know it could just have been a cruel backstory with a gem we don't know. But that would mean a whole new strand of relationship developement and charakter developement on pearls part. Which would not make that much sense to do. If there was another higher ranked gem it would be at least as powerful as jasper to deserve a servant and that would overthrow the balance of forces in the universe a lot. Its an television series with an ongoing plot, so everything has to be interwoven at least to some degree to be considered good. Just look at AdventureTime. It has many revealing or foreshadowing Parts that show what will happen.

A lot of people think of Pink Diamond is an evil character or the true villain because of this episode. I disagree with this assessment because being a villain would mean that one would be aware that what they do is morally wrong and not care. The thing about Pink is that she had the best intentions with her action that did not go well in the long run. Unfortunately the worst actions are those done with the best intentions. This doesn't make her evil just a flawed leader. Then again Steven and us as an audience are seeing thing from a perspective of hindsight making it hard to say if we would have done things differently if we were in that situation. Yes she had Garnet who could she the future but those were possibilities with no way of knowing for sure which future would happen until the moment came to pass.

"Being a villain means they know it's morally wrong but don't care" NO. Actually, most villains don't think of themselves as the villain. Hitler genuinely thought he was doing the right thing (he wasn't, but he wasn't willingly doing "the wrong thing"). Most "villains" are only framed that way because the "heroes" won and got to frame history however the fuck they wanted. Look at the U.S. They bombed innocent civilians and still got to say they were the good guys of WW2, because they WON and that's what's important.

I saw the "Pearls" each as an aspect of her at the time of their birth. The way people are constantly changing and growing, so was Pearl and each time a big life changing event happened a new Pearl was born. Each time this happens the person becomes new, changed by the event. A new angier person, a more forgiving person, a safer person... etc. What we saw were the births of each new aspect that makes Pearl who she currently is today. That's just how I saw it.

Fantastic analysis! Pearl is my favorite character and this episode reminded me why. I was wondering, just how similar are the other gems' minds to Pearl's? Everyone has an autopilot and several layers of unconsciousness, but as another commenter superbly wrote about, Pearl's inner Pearls could directly reflect how fragmented her mind is and how she suppresses and hides away part of herself. Does that mean, other Gems don't have inner gems at all, or only one? How would their emotional struggles be represented? I would like to know how Garnet's mind could be visualized, since a lot of fans seem to headcannon that it's Ruby and Sapphire debating in there, I wonder if that's true.

Im comin to this vid 6 yrs later and im lovin the slow realisation of your past self, and many others in the fandom, that Pink/Rose did some rly toxic/abusive things A Single Pale Rose reveals a thread that had always been there just waitin to be pulled on to unravel the tapestry of the life of Rose Quartz; lover, abuser, rebel warrior, complicit coloniser, funlovin, impulsive, caring, selfish and sm more. A complex individual; as all are truly From past yous tone from 1:55 , it seems quite clear that you think its rly effed up that Pink wud feel she had to order Pearl in this way... Which yeah, i vibe with even moreso knowin the fuller picture; and its complex, its always complex I get why Pink felt that was what she had to do; she hadnt been raised in an environment where she cud trust anyone, and she was raised to see this kind of control as normal... And yet, one cant help but feel like she mustve known how trustworthy Pearl was, she mustve known that a conversation cudve worked; but alas... Its rly hard to escape that cycle of control, and even for Pink it wud take quite a while longer to learn to trust others; and even then, she nvr even trusted Pearl with knowledge of Bismuth's fate. Even to her end, she kept secrets aplenty, even from her lovers; even from her Pearl and her Gareg. She nvr felt she cud fully traut anyone, and tbf, wud you be able to if you were raised by White, Yellow, & Blue; raised to bottle up until you explode for fear of bein forcibly controlled into bein that which you arent... Its unimaginable, but still as complex as Pink/Rose is; many of her actions remain unforgivable. Bcuz that is simply the way with abuse, it leaves scars that ripple thru the pond of life and it takes a concerted effort from lots of beavers to dam it up; i think theres a metaphor in there somewhere xD But no truly, it takes a lot to stop the scars from growin; and more oft than not, it takes more than one human lifetime. Ppl are complex, and Rose highlights this in a very human way; bein both a mom to look up to, and a mom to aspire nvr to be like... as far too many parents end up bein to far too many kids

marlonyo I thinks it’s a bit more complicated than that. No, Pearl can’t break orders, but she did eventually find a loophole. She showed Steven without “speaking of it” and he easily can fill in the others. I also wonder if Steven, since he has Pink’s gem, can truly free Pearl from all previous orders. Now that he knows Pearl’s history, I believe he would do it in an instant if he finds he has that power.

This pretty much explains why pearl didn’t want to shapeshift back in season 1. She was probably still traumatized over what she had to do.

The different pearls kind of act like a DID system, (previously known as multiple personality disorder) they each have their own 'job' almost, like the sorting one yanno. It's kind of just like alters in the inner world

I loved so much that there's actually a video talking about this. I personally love the idea of Pearl's inner Pearls basically representing PTSD/even OSDD brought on by the PTSD. There's a form of OSDD that I heard described exactly like this is shown, with fragmented parts of the person but none of the parts really as a fully realized person, but different versions and aspects of the person. All gems might be able to hold pocket dimensions in their gems, but Pearl's being so complex could very well be a representation of a headspace. Each Pearl is a different fragmented function or feeling of pearl that dissociated from her, they're all real pearls inside of the main or core Pearl, although none are fully realized people in their own right.

Dragon empress I described the basics of the signs for it in my comment, but it's a dissociative disorder caused by psychological trauma(which with pearl was brought on by PD/Rose for multiple reasons.) OSDD 1a is categorized as being similar to DID, except for the parts being less distinct, as in not being fully realized and more of different versions of the core(the real Pearl.)

Steven's powers have been growing stronger and stronger.. I think the ability to go into gems might be the key for him healing the corrupted gems!

With the way they are trying to play out how gems work is really interesting. We haven't fully grasped how our own minds work or what conciousness truly is since how complex it is. The Pearls that Steven encounters, like you said, can be taken as memories or personifications of times she was in emotional distress. It was the typical different emotions being represented like happiness or anger. These events have left a mark on Pearl that it is stored in her dimensions and is basically still Pearl. The surface version of herself can be seen as her subconsciousness.

Kinda like the Core Memories and Personality Islands in Inside Out. That just now occurred to me that that's basically what the Inner Pearls are.

I was looking for an analysis on Pearl's hair colour and character design when I found this video, this is a really clear and detailed analysis of the episode, thank you so much! I especially loved the point on "Surface Pearl" cus there's really so much to say about her that you so concisely captured. I'm not sure if you've done it already, but is it possible for you to do a deeper analysis on the different Pearls' (like the inner Pearls, the past Pearls and the present Pearl) hair colour and clothing (what they mean about Pearl). It's something that I've been contemplating but I can't seem to find a video or text on it... It's not a must of course, but it'd just be interesting if you could :')

Looking back on everything we have seen and know about Pearl this reveals a lot about her. This answered all my questions of Pearl and where does she go from here finally letting fully go of Rose Quarts legacy and her servitude towards this lie. Pearl now is actually free now!

I think only Pearls have a pocket dimension. Peridot said they're made to "hold your stuff for you", Pearl is also the only gem who seems to store things in her gem.
