My dad heard this song when he was like 17 and that’s when he fell in love with Pearl Jam

I was 13 when this song came out and already a Pearl Jam fan. I was abused, mostly verbally and emotionally and via neglect, by my mother from birth to age 16, when I finally got to move away. This song hit me like a freight train. The lyrics hurt so bad, but yet I had never felt so seen and recognized. I can’t help but sing along, often through tears, when I hear it. I do make one small ad lib to it though- I sing “Don’t call me daughter. You’re not fit to.” This daughter has done a lot of work to overcome the past. I have no contact with either of my genetic contributors these days and I have two children of my own that have never known the sort of suffering I lived through. She has, indeed, risen above.

wow. I know it's said that life is all about soul growth and learning to overcome - but it seems especially challenging and heart wrenching to hear about children going through abuse. That said, I'm happy you have done so well and I hope others going through similar stuff will read your comment and know that sometimes troubled people raise us, and we have to decipher what's best for one another on our own. best to you, Kay

As a 40yo woman, and a teen of the 90’s, I loved this song, but it never “struck” me until hearing it today. I recently learned that my 6yrs older than me 2nd cousin, was abused by her family. To this day, they’re doing things to keep her down and under their thumbs. But, they always seemed so much “better” than us, so much more well-off and put together. I was shook when I found this out, and it pains me FOR her, because for all that we lacked in financials/functionality, we made up for in deeply caring for one another. I may have grown up in a shack of a home, but the love & support I experienced there, never really allowed me to see that I was “lower class”. It was just a feeling. This song came on today, and my cousin immediately came to mind. I’ve found that listening to music you once loved as a youth can open your eyes to many things you didn’t have the ability to comprehend before.

hugs to you. i'm also a survivor but more importantly my 5 year old daughter made an outcry to me february 15,2023 that her dad / my ex husband of 5 years (she was almost 6 and we divorced before she was 1) was violating her little body. he had used the threat of killing me (which my abuser did) if she told. she's got a bit of a betrayal bond / trauma bond with him. all reports filed and he's gone to jail (bailed out in and me and the kids are in counseling. he's now stalking us in person and cyberstalking. i've tried to get any law enforcement to care. it's sad they can't / don't / won't do anything - because HE has RIGHTS. Our injustice system is a joke. Incestual pedos that post videos that got discovered - on the dark web - gets to walk free - despite being 50k behind on child support / violating bond / stalking/ death threats. anyways - i'm proud of you! any words of advice for my daughter?

Even if Pearl Jam is not the best band out there, or the most popular, I believe they still deserve some respect. I mean they sold 60 million records worldwide, and have put up with some crazy stuff. I love how they won't make music videos because they want people to like the music not the video. They are a great group full of meaning, and truth to their songs. Go Pearl Jam!

I didn’t know this song was written about me; learning disabled young girl with adolescent anger. Pearl Jam wrote songs for the youth angst. All grunge did!

This song has drawn me since the day I heard it. I remember playing this over and over in the stereo at my girlfriend's place during a party some 30 years ago. I am there everytime I hear this song. My favorite PJ song still.

i think i totally misunderstood this song as a teenager, i get it now though. i always used to hum it to myself because i never felt like i was fit enough to be called "daughter" by my parents, i thought i was an embarrassment to them. thank god for growing up and learning!

I always look forward to the part of their songs where Vedder's pitch matches the notes being played. It doesn't always happen, but it's a nice moment.

This song has got me through my very lowest/darkest depths. I was close to throwing myself on a train track. I was in a mentally abusive relationship, and I finally managed to escape. Then something much worse, which I can't go into happened. This song and the support of an amazingly supportive wife have made me feel unbreakable. I'd love to meet PJ or even just speak over the phone to let them know just how much their songs help when shit gets real bad

I never understood why at a young age, I liked Pearl Jam's songs. We never really understood the lyrics back then but I knew there was something there. Now that I am 36, I completely understand why. I feel so old and thankful! ❤️ (Our eldest brother introduced them to me and saw from him that he can relate to their songs, he is 51 now)

I heard this at a grocery store today. They're finally playing 1990s music, including grunge and rap (Arrested Development). They used to only play 1960s and 1970s stuff back when I first went in 2016. We're now at a point where this stuff and 1980s stuff are the "oldies." I was a teenager in the late 1990s when oldies were considered music up to 1973, so I guess it's only fair. I'll be 38 in November.

I would often sing this when I was younger, but I can't remember why. I did always have a difficult time with my own mother (even now as an adult) and was subjected to a lot of bullying at school so maybe the lyrics spoke to me, or there could be no deeper meaning and I just enjoyed the song. The world may never know
