Pearl Modern Utility 14x6.5 Steel Snare Review : Bearded Drums (Episode 47)

In this week's episode we take a look at the Pearl Modern Utility 14x6.5 steel snare drum. The Modern Utility line by Pearl was initially offered in maple with many different sizes to choose from. Now, with the popularity of this line Pearl has added tom it to include two steel shell models. A "14x5.5 model and the one we look at today, a "14x6.5 model. These drums feature a 1mm beaded steel shell, textured satin finish, CL arch lugs, SR 700 strainer and triple flanged hoops. These snares like their maple counterparts are very budget friendly with the 14x5.5 model coming in at $149.00 and the 14x6.5 model at $179.00. These steel snares a billed as having great punch at full attack yet still remaining crisp and sensitive at lower volumes. I have a ton of experience with Pearl snare drums but this is the first steel shell I have ever owned. I am used to mainly playing brass and maple shells so this was a nice change to the types of sounds I have grown accustomed to. After a couple of weeks and several different types of gigs I have found this snare to be versatile and able to adapt to different sixes if venues. It has a very fat punch yet still remains crisp for more intricate playing. Especially considering it's price this a great snare for anyone on a budget that still wants a good quality product or a player just looking for something different fro their current snare lineup. A great drum for the price range.This makes me feel good when I see products being released at an affordable price range especially for the young players out there or even for the seasoned players looking for something a little different to add to there arsenal that don't break the bank.I would venture to say if a person spent $50.00 down the road and changed the heads and maybe put some puresound wires on the drum they would probably end up with a fantastic drum. Nice review, especially that you used it in the context of several gigs. I’ve got the 5.5”x14” natural maple that hasn’t come off my kit in three months. I don’t muffle it at all and it gives me this easy “POW!” with little to no ring. Pearl just keeps making great stuff!

I think I like the ludwig new superlite or the yamaha steel reverse bead metal snare drums. The have 10 lugs and are a budget Price.

I just got one myself, not sure why they were discontinued. It's loud as hell! Mine does not ring this much though, must be the tuning. I picked it out above 3 similarly priced snares, including an older Pearl 10 lug. Stock heads are quite fine.

Love the lights on the live drum kit. What are they ? Steel is probably the least expensive of all metal snares, but made by most top brands.

That product is called Drumlite. Easy to install and works great.

I really like that finish! Sounds flat, I'd take the dot off and crank up the bottom head, 8 lug drums are tricky though. Great playing and variety of playing conditions. I'm not a fan of 8 lug mostly as a rule. Acrolites tune up nice for 8 lug as an exception. Cymbals sound nice, what is your left main crash? Reminds me of my aax 18" Dark crash.

So this is a cheaper version of the snare I got with my export select kit in 1995. Just not chrome plated. Kinda lame.
