I don't like what Pearl said but I see it as constructive critism. Culturally she is married but take it further and make it officially get the marriage certificate that seals everything. Such friends may not be always sensitive but can help one doing the right thing almost like an older sister looking out for a younger sister.

IsiZulu sithi kumele ubenoMbondo, uMembeso and then uMabo, in that particular order too. uMabo noMshado are usually combined into one event, but they are still separate proceedings. You’re are only a real wife once you’ve gone through all these stages and wathelwa ngenyongo by your in laws. At that point you are recognised ancestrally. A lot of people chop and change things nowadays. But iqiniso is uyingoduso until the point yokuthelwa ngenyongo wamkelwe emagcekeni. A lot of people are fiancés claiming to be wives. I don’t blame them. These things take forever to be completed, especially in today’s economy. You’ll be a bride in waiting for years. 😅 So I don’t think Pearl is being a hater here, she’s just being honest unless we want to continue with the narrative of lying to ourselves. This is how we lose our culture. In conclusion: Culturally she’s a fiancé. Legally she’s a wife coz the law doesn’t follow the rules of culture. Once gifts are exchanged, the law considers you married.

I think culturally you have to blend the practices of both tribes if you come from different backgrounds. If a white man marries a black woman, they must still pay lobola, respecting the practices of the brides side of the family. Like uLinda Mtoba for example. I think the least Zinhle can do is uMbondo coz that is owed by the brides family to the groom. uMembeso would be the reverse, where the grooms family takes gifts to the brides family, but since Murda is Pedi and doesn’t practice that, his family wouldn’t know what to do. They could skip a few things on that basis. Just my thoughts. But at the end of the day it’s up to them what they would like to do or not. They could be married/not married depending on the lense you view the relationship from. Either way, I think it’s bad practice to speak about your friend’s relationship in their absence. It makes you look shiesty.
