Like all my fights on this channel, this is an non-choreographed medieval fight. The rules in this one were simple, the knight can attake all bodyparts exept the faces and all techniques of historical combat were allowed. To make this possible he used training weapons from Dominus Gladius. dominusgladius.com/flanged-mace-ver.2/ The first fight was won by the peasants, because the knight tryed to hold back, but not in the second. If the peasents are afraid and dont charge all at once the knight can take one after another and win the fight. The crossbow wouldnt nessecary change the game, you still need a lucky shot and hit a weak spot with only one bolt. @SuzukiChen It’s more than just revenge. He’s the Landvoght, IE, the local bailiff/steward. He’s the lord’s administrator in the district. He’s responsible for collecting rents, enforcing the law and dispensing justice in the area. If there’s a gang of bandits in the district, it’s his duty to bring them to justice.

@@SuzukiChen I don't think you understand the dynamic and social relationships which existed in the time period. The peasants were loyal to the lord, the lord to their king. if the relationship went sour at any level, it was not good, and had knock on effects which could dramatically affect their rents, incomes, and standing of the nobles. So it was really in their best interest to have happy and healthy peasants. This idea the nobility was just blood thirsty tyrants, is tired and old.

I like this so much. So often in movies people kinda slice through armor. And in games armor just gives you more "health". Here you can see both how formidable a fully armored knight is, and the fear he instills. "I just shot a stewards horse and he's coming" kinda sounds like the guy knows he fucked up lol. The only real chance these guys could've had was if they all grabbed him and dropped him on the ground and held him while the knife guy looked for an opening between plates. But there's also psychology. Sure they would've beat him if they had done that, but each of them individually is too afraid to rush in. Absolutley great video.

True. If they had been four professional men-at-arms instead of peasant militia, they would have been skilled enough to know how to deal with a knight and ended it that way. Just like Crecy. One of the details that I liked was how the knight could confidently walk right into the brigands' attacks and beat them with his mace or thrust with his halberd without needing to give a shit about their attacks. Very few depictions of armor really get across the sheer advantage of being able to ignore an attack to press home your own. You can't just pile onto someone and stab at him when he can also smack or stab you with zero fear.
@michaelpettersson4919
@michaelpettersson4919 3 күн бұрын
The brigands really should have trained for this situation. That means a cooperative attack meant to get the knight onto the ground, then used that dagger they mentioned. But the knight knew they were not good for organised combat. Considering the military gear, they have there is a good chance some of them are deserters. Maybe their lack of discipline is why they deserted.

If the footmen wanted a fighting chance against the noble knight, they would encircle the knight, and the one facing the knight’s back would try to stab him in between de gaps of plate armour. If the knight would rush one of them, they would have to expand the circle by falling back, leaving the knight to keep chasing them, eventually tiring the knight out and keep hitting his blind spot. Given that the footmen are demoralized because of the cold, and probably did not have a full stomach, my verdict is that this scene is very realistic. Well done.

as a tactical approach, i would have ordered my peasant kin to spread out around the knight, and whoever is facing the knight is just to gain the attention of the knights strikes and evade them. Then at the moment the knights tries to strike, the others behind pounce and grapple the knight to the ground, then use daggers on him. pretty sure we, the peasants, would win 9 out of 10 with that tactic if the knight had a poleaxe and mace. from the knight perspective, given the peasants have minimal to no armour, i'd have preferred an arming sword. it's short, quick, and can't be grabbed easily, which should allow the knight to keep killing even when grappled to the ground.

This is probably the best depiction of a real world 1 versus many I’ve ever seen; if the one guy is better equipped and better skilled then no one actually wants to go toe to toe with him, so all of them are hanging back and looking for an opening, giving the outnumbered guy breathing room. Way more believable than just having one or two guys run in at once and angling the camera so that you can’t see the others just standing around.

Your remark is on point. There is an old proverb in Japanese swordsmanship (and the same thing must be taught in HEMA as well) that "crossing swords is hell, but paradise is one step forward", interpreted as "not committing is going to get you killed, but going in / crossing the distance (and destroying the enemy's distance) is the way to win".

That sent a shiver down my spine. Felt like I was watching something recorded from many centuries ago and unfolded how I expected a knight vs peasants to actually unfold. It was similar to how soldiers in WWI would have felt facing early tanks that rolled across no man's land, their weapons mostly useless against them. A knight was basically the equivalent of a tank in those times and only a few weapons could even threaten it.. was chilling.

@@dequitem when one puts together the vastly superior body armor along with the mor extensive training then a Knight of this time is very much the equivalent to a modern era tank. takes a lot more to get through the armor, needs to be hit in weak spots of said armor to take any real damage AND can dish out unholy amounts of damage to anyone around. so yeah, a Tank..

In the Battle of Agincourt when the French knights charged into the muddy British lines of archers, men of arms, and knights. The English and Welsh peasant longbow archers were trained to go into close combat against knights and to use whatever pointy weapon they had at hand whether it be a dagger, a sharp stick or wood or metal, or their arrow and to attack at the French knight's manhood, pluck their eyes, and whatever opening they can find in the armor and it worked well. The modern day or ww2/ww1 equivalent would be soldiers going up to a tank and placing a grenade in whatever weak spot they can find

In their first battles, british tanks performed poorly, mobility and reliability were not good and the armor barely bulletproof, still vulnerable to artillery and mortars. Brigands facing a mounted knight would have been like insurgents with AKs facing an armored humvee with machine gun.

I feel like the first guy who went down basically lost the fight for the team. He started by grabbing a sword instead of a spear or polearm so the knight had a reach advantage on him. He then gets hit almost immediately which makes it harder for the peasants to dance around the knight striking from a distance. For the peasants to have a chance they probably needed to surround the knight and let him exhaust himself while they focused on staying alive.

I think that armour actually adds a really interesting aspect to combat that could be used by medieval fiction writers/movies. Like, a knight might feel quite invincible in his armour, as seen here, but he slips/the peasants get a hold of his limbs/charge him together/he's hurt through the slits by a bolt (least likely scenario but possible), and all of his sudden his easy victory turns into a horrifying, drawn out struggle for life as he fights to keep the numerically superiors peasants at bay, like hungry wolves closing in on an injured animal... Yeah, you could work with that I think.

The knight is likely better conditioned. But moreover, flee for what? They leave their equipment and supplies in the winter in that part of Europe? They’re as good as dead. And they’re re-enacting the Pine Barrens episode of the Sopranos.

@@DetergentChemtrails Wrong. The knight is also in motion. It encumbers you less than you think. This also requires people to be far more suicidal than they usually are. Your average person doesn’t run headlong into a fight. Especially if they’re untrained. This isn’t a video game. Seeing one of your buddies go down will probably make you pause even for a moment. Moreover, grappling is easier when you’re heavier due to your armor. And y’know. You know how to grapple. You’re right on paper though. Someone just has a close to 100% percent chance of being thrust or cleaved by that halberd. In this scenario, would you prefer it to be you?

Its super true how these brigands would just get pretty easily destroyed, but I like how they still showed skill and prowess whilst fighting. I think that it is possible for them to have achieved some sort of haubergeon, which they should of course give to the most skilled of the bunch. I can't imagine how horrifying it would be if those Knights who really trained to kill people ending up on the opposing side. Take Sir Peirre Terrail for example, killed 200 men, all by himself. He would absolutely maul so many people without them even standing a chance. Or Sir William Stanley as well, he killed so many actual armoured nobles, he was one of the best soldiers of all time, if not the best. I loved this so much, if there was more, I would watch it for sure.

I liked it. Some things made me scream with the peasants lol Holding the line against a single opponent instead of surrounding him. You give him free rein to choose who to attack... It's realistic only if we consider that the peasants have absolutely not thought about the weaknesses of a man in armor. In reality, it is not excluded that fear prevents us from reacting correctly. Just as in our time, people trained in combat can still make bad choices by surprise or fear. The video shows the interest of armor in this strategic choice. We could also imagine the same scene with a peasant who knocks over from behind.

The peasants apparently won in the first fight since they didn't fear the knight and dogpiled him, which is quite realistic since adrenaline and a guy in your group fearlessly charging encouraging the other four to charge will most likely encourage a gangbang on this random knight. All the knight has to do is get pushed over and it's practically over for him as the peasants stab whatever they have through the cracks of his armor

Man, THIS is how fights should look like in a movie or something, of course given proper camera movement and angles. I loved how you can basically tell the impact of those shots on unarmored vs armored :)

I get the knight here. Killing a horse in these times, especially a trained warhorse, would be like pouring sugar in a McLaren's gas tank. I thought the mancatcher would have more of an impact on the outcome, but it's interesting to see just how futile "go for the joints" is as a strategy when dealing with an armored opponent.

This is basically when you are a tiny local militia, and a tank rolls into town. Doesn't matter if theres 4 of you and 1 of him if he is impervious to all of your weapons I love how his weapon got pulled away early and he had to switch to the sidearm right away. Even though he lost the reach advantage, he didn't try to parry anything, he just closed distance and let the armor do it's thing, made them fight his fight. I also love the detail of the crossbow jamming up, and not having enough time to load it before he got there, since that weapon might have actually changed the encounter a little bit, since if the boys could have kept him at bay, he could have maybe had a chance to get a shot in that might have been able to pierce mail. Might not have been a complete game changer, but it might have at least given them SOME chance.

Still armor could deflect projectile if knight did some rapid movement.

Maybe with some more strategy the bandits could have win? What if they encircle him and the 2 on the back grab both of his arm, or just stabbing the armors gaps?

@plagueday5395Potentially. But remember, everyone has a plan until your buddy gets his head caved in with a single swing. Other combatants aren’t NPCs. While you’re strategizing, they are too. Given the knight’s training, he might have already considered this

The only thing I find unrealistic is how easily the fist guy got taken down. I feel like he should've tried blocking more instead of standing there and taking a stab to the chest like he did. Other than that, this whole fight was well done and very believable .
