So I upgraded the Peavey Vypyr combo and installed a Celestion Heritage GM12 speaker in there. Just trying to figure out if it's worth upgrading, it would be fairly easy to get a used peavey vypyr and a used celestion for a good price. Check it out and hear the comparison between the original and the Celestion.

To be honest I often find it very difficult to hear the more subtle differences in sound on KZbin videos. Also when you are using microphones the sound often seems verry muddy. Maybe it has something to do with how KZbin compresses the videos when they are uploaded. So most of the times I just rely on what you're telling about the sound instead of relying on how a pedal or amp sounds in the videos on KZbin.

Personally, it sounded just a little better with the regular speaker to me, however there are any number of factors that could be contributing to that. On my earbuds, it sounded like the original speaker did have some extra fuzz in the sound, I think it's personal preference as to which you like more, or not... Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like you could get about the same effect as Ola did by changing to the Celstion speaker, just by turning the gain down a bit. Hahahaha. My opinion is not the only right one. On another note, this guy's riffs are SICK!

I have one of the older model Vypyrs as my bedroom amp, and I tried connecting it to my 4x12. Impedence was the same (8 ohms) on the cab as the speaker but after about 2 or 3 minutes all sounds stopped. I shut it off and fired it back up and same thing. It may have just been me but for whatever reason the output section of my amp did not like pushing that large of a cab. Be careful and don't blow something up....the few minutes I got to mess with it sounded ok...or as ok as it can going through 4 celestion G12t-75s. Good luck and may the chug be with you.

As a small time guitar dealer I can definitely tell you that if you get our child the VYPYR, it will not only last for years, the amp will be able to grow as their abilities grow. What I mean by that is after mastering the basics of guitar they can start adding more effects. There is also a USB out available on it. And, the Sampera foot controller, either the small or big one, REALLY opens the amplifier's capabilities up. Good luck my friend!

Actually worked really well in that combo. I’m surprised since Greenbacks don’t normally like open-back 1x12 kind of applications. They get woofy. I do hear some of that in the lower mids (should be easy to dial out), but overall it’s a really nice improvement and gets rid of the nasty hair and fizz.

I have an older Peavey Vypyr 30 and I swapped the stock speaker (Blue Marvel) with a Eminence Governor. It rounded out the tone a little and gave it more "oomph", a worthy upgrade. The old speaker tone would get lost playing live, whereas a better speaker helped the tone come through much better. The Vypyr 30 isn't an overly loud amp so it didn't help volume-wise. I also tested the same combo with a 2x12 Zilla cab which was a huge improvement. The speaker change was one thing, but a hefty cab made all the difference. I may be tempted to get the Vypyr converted into a head sometime, as changing the cabinet was by far the biggest improvement.

I preferred the original speaker, you can record it and apply some EQ in post to adjust it to your taste

The Celestion has less harsh upper frequencies and less farty bottom end. A bit darker tho

Sometimes a little extra eq tweaking is all you need if one isn't completely satisfied. I thought the original speaker sounded fine, though.

@@MadAlhazred they recommend running it at full power for ten hours to break them in. It’s a huge pain in the ass. I try to buy used speakers for that very reason

The tube power section on the Vypyr Tube models smooths out some of that harshness already. I think the cabinet of the Tube 60 combo may be a bit bigger as well even though it's also a 112. The 120W Vypyr Tube combo was a 212 and I'd imagine that'd have some more bottom end too. The tube models do not work with the peavey vypyr edit software though that the newer vypyrs had if you really want that feature.

it surprises me that so many of the commentators here didn't account for one thing. Ola bought this amp used, meaning the original speaker is broken in. The new Celestion is not.... it will sound even better after it's "broken in". Totally worth the upgrade to my ears.

I have a 1st gen vypyr still laying around. I am glad to see they took the stupid plastic fangs off of the newer ones. I had to remove that mess myself.

The new, more expensive speaker requires more power/volume to really push it. But I like the more rounded tone and darkness that it has.
