Certainly a great topic. I've been thinking a lot lately about "re-focusing" my collecting as I seem to have wandered a bit down a rabbit hole of buying pretty much anything! That said, I am always very cognizant of price and if it's not something I "must have" then I am only buying it if it is cheap. It has to be an absolute must have if I am paying FMV or even slightly over. I also do my best to put my money into books that have multiple things going for them, not just movie or TV spec. I feel a lot better putting my money into silver or bronze age keys over modern stuff. I just don't feel confident books like Young Avengers #1 or Jane Foster Thor #1 will retain high values over time. Same with a lot of the high priced variants I see. Of course, if I find them on the cheap I will grab them. I view the modern spec books as something I can flip so I can buy the classic stuff I really want in my PC.

Wise words Regie! Great mentality to have when in this hobby, can't be going wild on spec - especially if it's something that you don't even really care about. I try to only spec on things I'd be interested in keeping / reading myself anyways - that way it's still a win even if I decide to keep it in the PC.

Totally agree with this video, Regie. Especially having an objective. Starting with finding my favorite character was the best thing early on, with all that's out there, it gives you focus, and that's driven me ever since. I think for me getting back into collecting last year I found that not much has changed. I have some nice sets of books that have come out and missed others that came and went very fast. The fun of speculating is getting something cheap and either turning a profit for it or trading up to something you want. Lately I have been looking at some of my past purchases and some of what I bought has seen dramatic increases. I am also a Amazing Spiderman collector and X-men mostly. I think it comes down to what you like and what you want to achieve with your collection. I am very glad you have a laser focus on yours but I sometimes wander into lots of different areas.

I have bought two books to resell, and I've realized that the resell game just isn't for me considering both books are sitting in the box because I'm too lazy to post them. So while it's tempting to spec books, I have to recognize that I shouldn't do it. However, I will absolutely spec on books I want for my collection. I recently bought a mini series because I think the storyline will play into the Falcon and Winter Soldier series. If I'm right, then I just saved a bunch of money by getting them before the price spikes. If I'm wrong, then I just have books that I was going to buy later on anyway. Win win.

@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
SS versus Submariner? In my mind it’s more about Galactus versus Submariner. We’ve already seen SS in a movie so I’m not certain that books will increase in value because of him unlike FF 48-59 increasingly in value due to Galactus. I would prioritize FF48-50 if you can find them at an affordable price. I would then go after Submariner appearances.

Interesting subject, I suspect that I will continue to do what I have been doing for the last ten years of Marvel Movies and not buy in to the hype and artificially inflated prices. I have been around for a couple of days now, In fact I started seriously collecting comics at about the age of 14. That was way back... um yeah well put it this way I had trouble deciding if I wanted the newest beetles album or some new comics, so I bought the new Steppenwolf album instead. So yeah, I have been around the block more then a couple of times and feel that I am imminently qualified to decide what I should purchase as an investment and what I should just buy because I like it. Unsurprisingly enough they are generally one and the same. If a comic goes up by 10% it might be a good buy and perhaps worth investing in for the long term, on the other hand if a comic goes up 1000% over the course of a few weeks, I treat it like a flea infested plague carrying rat and stay away from it and invariably the price will settle down to something affordable unless of course it's the first print of TMNT #1 (kicks self for not giving the $25 the guy wanted for it in 1989...). In the end a comic is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and if you are willing to pay $300 or $500 for a comic that a few months ago was not selling for $5 then I am ok with that, but I'm not doing it, I'm to old to be playing that game. As a side note OMG I got a package in the mail today from Tina... holy crap, two comics that I have heard of but never actually seen are now permanently a part of my collection! The upside is I'VE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE, PRETTY MUCH GIVEN UP ALL HOPE OF GETTING THEM AND NOW THEY ARE MINE! The down side is they will now join Superman 101(first comic I ever read, though not the actual comic) and Superman 46 (1946 B-Day gift from my wife and the ONLY comic she has ever bought me) as comics that I will never, ever sell. Because gifts, I don't sell gifts, as a consequence I have a lot of crap that I don't want or need that I hang on to (STNG clock that never kept the right time, Gon plush dinosaur, Jurrassic Park Mirror and a butt load of Steven King Hardback 1st editions that I don't really want, but they were gifts, so I keep them). But I digress Buy what you like, collect what you like, if you like them raw great, if you want them all slabbed great. Collect the way that is right for you. Don't let ANYONE EVER tell you what or how to collect... um except for me of course (see previous sentence).

I always liked going after what interested me comic book wise aesthetically for the art. I was always into artists, especially for the cover artwork and then hoping the book would keep the same artists that brought me in. After that, I got into storylines and would be open to new books and new characters that were introduced to me from characters and teams that I was already familiar with. Spec books are out of control, I know Golden Age and Silver Age books can be worth a lot no secret there. I think when we tie comic books with speculation we start to engage in something that can hurt the comic book collecting rather than help it. One thing to think about is how everything revolves around money when speculating. No one says wow we are getting a Taskmaster in the new Blackwidow movie. Instead is how much is that book worth right now and let us buy as much as we can to flip. Now I'm not against flipping and helping a fellow comic book collector, but more often you find the greed that comes with the speculation of comics.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
I can’t argue against these points. And, being totally honest, sometimes the greed has resulted in me making some poor decisions. 🤷🏾‍♂️ And, in some cases it’s paid off because I purchased a book that ended up going up in value. More than likely the book is still sitting on a bin but at a higher price point. Greed like most emotions can be good or bad. It depends upon how it’s been used. Thank you for dropping some knowledge in the comments bud.

Full Transparency, I do not have a Ebay store or sell books on a daily basis.. But love to take part in Flipping books (Getting the jump on cover prices up to $10 - $15 a pop and selling for 4 - 100x's the price of admin really gets me FIRED UP.. Got to Flip Books to pay for this hobby.. First off, There is no point in purchasing a speculative buy at H@T market prices after the news (in question for the spec Book) has been reported or even confirmed.. That is Ridiculous and just an Impulse Buy, IMO..At this point (News Breaks or Rumors Confirmed), I figure I have a 5 - 20 minute window online with my Bookmarks of the 97 online back issue retailers and up to 1 week at 20 - 25 Lcs's in the 10 mile radius of my Hood.. If after that.. The Spec is done for me and I have zero interest unless its swap meet find or garage sale treasure chest discovery.. Mainly because all Comic books (unless its AF15 or FF 1-4, Etc) , like stocks and Boiling Hot and Tap Water, they go up and they go down and they simmer and some get damn right Ice Cold.. IMO, I think it is Ridiculous to buy a 9.6 - 9.8 Eternals #1 at (9.6) $600 or (9.8)$900 - $1100 *I am guessing don't know FMV for this book* (unless you are making good ass money and it doesn't effect you in the wallet)Why you ask? Well that is a HUGE Gamble and like betting a 2 to 5 chalk favorite in a 10 horse race.. Especially, Since *Movies fall in and out of production all the time, so why make that huge gamble or Investment, especially when there is not much more margin to work with on ROI..* At least for me, I buy low and Flip high (When I can and yes I have failed and made dumb buys but have learned a lot through these trials and failures) to pay for mega Keys and future Flips... Always want to have extra lute in the wallet for future flips! So, in a nutshell, *YES I do agree with Regie 100% about doing your homework and making your own informative decisions based on the basis of your intel and research*.. I do not believe you need to ask yourself, "does this fit in my collection.."If your buying 1 book, ok I guess that can work for some, but I think the question that replaces that question, for me at least, is , "if I buy 10 copies of this book at $5 (Cover Price Cvr A) - $12.50 (half ratio 1:25 RI) which is $50 and/or $125.00.. Can I at least recoup my initial investment or at least have the will and energy to make the move prior to the Spec being shot dead?" Then I ask myself, "If I miss the window, at the very least recoup my initial Investment?". Those are the 2 questions I ask myself when buying speculation.. Now, Hot Market Price Spec.. or as some would call it,"Flavor of the Month" Naw Na Na Na Nawwww! Unless It is something confirmed, or history supports that the book has some guts..

Ive said it before and I'll say it again. And those that have flipped retro video games in the last 10 years. Will know what I'm talking about. retro video game youtubers, artifically inflated the fmv. And comic content creators will have influence on demand of certain books and I believe that will cause books that wouldn't otherwise spike... spike.

I'm treading into this realm now as I've bought books per graded 9.8's and some SS. Artgerm, marvel #1000, and a few others. Some have sold out already before the release date so I'm optimistic about profits on thoes ( at least the multiples sold will reimburse and make the ones I keep free) time will tell, but it was spent with $$$ I was reading to loose if needed. That's how you always have to look at gambling. Lol

Great video! I asked the same questions when the Atlas Comics speculation came out. Didnt buy any of the books and didn't fit my objective or collection.

I respect it bro. I went another route as you know. I was able to pick up a lot of these books for a few books but they fit into my wheelhouse. Contrast that to Spawn 300 and 301 where I'll be taking a pass. Without a focus for your collection you're in the wild. Well done bro.

I was stuck with Ms. Marvel 1 boguht just before the movie came out. Biggest mistake I made. Re-sold it at a loss.
