Hi Dave. Just getting back to finishing out an early full stock Hawken. I just happen to run across your KZbin channel and was surprised you’re building an early Hawken also. I’m going to try doing the stock in aqua fortis. I will be browning the barrel and I think I’m gonna keep this rifle pretty darn basic. I’ll be watching your updates and good luck on the project.

That's going to be a good one. Flintlock muzzleloaders should be long in my opinion to look "right". Other guns, I favor carbines. Does the stock have any figure (curl) to it? Light color, maple? What caliber is this one? Any idea why the early rifles were full stock? Was it just the style, or some other reason? Hawken is the first I know of to make half stock rifles, I wonder if the first half stock was on purpose, or a screw up? I can see the barrel channel splitting, so he cut it off and used it anyway maybe?

This wood thing is fickle. This is a grade two stock and the last rifle was grade one and had more curl, not that this won't be a pretty piece of wood. I think if you want a guarantee curl, grad 3 or better and if building a plain Jane user model, just do a grade one. Don't know why full or never read how half cam about, but it sure became the rage, if I can use that word when referring to 19th century. Thanks for watching

@@BuckskinDave You bet Dave. Have you ever seen a flint or percussion shotgun with a full stock? I'm thinking they were all half stock, but could be wrong.

I don't remember ever seeing a full stock, except a trade gun or fowler

How about letting the customer that you are taking the payment from decide the custom features you put on this.
