Ashington - A Brief Tour

Ashington was at one time a thriving mining town but recent years have seen a steep decline with high levels of unemployment and social deprivation.

I lived there for the first 14 years of my life, im 21 now graduated Uni making great money, living it up in the USA, been employed for years... wouldn't be were i was today if it wasn't for Ashington!! Love this town, so stop hating on it.

I Like your film of Ashington...I know there are loads of shops closing down..but maybe its coz ppl shop elsewhere.....all the bars are chokka at the weekends...it was nice to see some of your shots...haha I recognised some people...Thanx

After the miners strike in the 80's the place became littered with charity and for some reason shoe shops. Long term unemployment is a problem too. However the positives are that Ashington is surrounded by beautiful countryside and northumberland has some if the best beaches in the world. Untouched and unspoilt. Northumberland is so beautiful. If only it could provide jobs it wld be the best place to live.

My great, great grandparents are from Ashington. Sailed to America on the Olympic in 1918 I believe. I wish I knew exactly where they lived in Ashington though. The only address they gave was a friend of theirs named Mr. Hunter, who lived in Ellington. I wish I could go there and find out!

I live in the next village along. Newbiggin by the sea but used to live in ash. And when to the schools there got 15 GCSEs and 5 a levels and I'm 21 now and an accountant so don't judge a book by its habitat!!
