Park is between Austin and Fredericksburg off of Hwy. 290. It is in a relatively dry state in the middle of the summer. Heavy rains in the Hill Country west of the park cause the Pedernales River to flow heavy, even good for white water rafting and capable of killing unsuspecting swimmers. The river feeds into the Colorado River at Lake Travis above Mansfield Dam. Beautiful area and great for camping in spring and fall. Summer can get pretty hot!

Went there a few times when I was a kid on family vacations (in the early 90's). Either they allowed swimming around the falls back then or my dad was more of a rebel than I thought and just didn't care, but I 100% remember sliding down the falls and having a BLAST.

Hey yeah, I love Pedernales Falls! I used to go there back in the 70's. I don't know what the protocol is now but every once in a while back then they would blare a siren to let people know that they were fixing to open the flood gates. That was to let people know to get out 'til it was done then it was safe to re-enter! It was so fun and beautiful!

Yeah... if you go a little bit past the designated swimming area, there's a trail and "crossing", I forget the name... but it's on the park map. That's where I always took my daughters swimming. If this park is new to you... then look up Hamilton Pool. It's nearby and gorgeous. But go early if it's on the weekend. They limit the number of people that can be in the park at a time and it fills up quickly.
