‘’PEDION AREOS’’ is the largest public grove in Athens and owes its name to the military gymnasiums of the Athens Guard that were held there in front of the temple of Taxiarches during the Othonic period.
At the central entrance of the grove is the equestrian statue of King Constantine. The sculpture reaches a height of 6 m and is made of brass. It depicts King Constantine with his horse. The thin pedestal rests on a tall hat and was inaugurated by the dictator Ioannis Metaxas on October 9, 1938. It is the work of the Italian sculptor Francesco Parisi.
The grove has an area of 277 acres, including finopoulos hill. It is located northeast of Omonia Square, from which it is 1 km away. The streets that surround grove are Mavrommataion st. Euelpidon st, Prigiponnision st and Alexandra Avenue.
In 1861 it housed the military HORSES installations. At the end of the nineteenth century it was a place of promenade, marking the events. We will meet not only the inhabitants but also the aristocratic families who roamed the area with their horses.
In 1887, King George signed the first royal decree that would define the grove ‘’PEDION AREOS’’ as a public recreation area. A few years later, a large part of the original area of the grove healer for the construction of the school of Eulipides with the donation of Georgios Averof to designs by Ernestos Chiller.
In 1922 after the Asia Minor disaster, thousands of refugees were accommodated in tents and makeshift shacks.
In 1934, the minister Petros Rallis formed the supreme urban planning committee in order to protect the public aesthetics of Athens, resulting in the final protection of the grove from destruction. During hot hours, the construction of a recreation center, preservation of the existing temples and the courtyard area. The largest infrastructure projects were also carried out, such as the lighting columns, the irrigation system, the fountain, the new laying of paths and others. The first substantial reconstruction stopped with the declaration of second world war.
On the north side of the grove there is also the historical theater ‘’Grove’’, known as the Economides building after the name of the well-known actor, writer and presenter George Economides. In the theater it remained closed for several years, but in recent years it was reopened and a very beautiful place for recreation, dining and entertainment was created.
Inside the grove there is an avenue of heroes, a memorial road for the heroes of the GREEK REVOLUTION, which was inaugurated on 25/03/1937. Among others, there are busts of Papaflessas Laskarina Bubulina, Odysseus Androutsos, Theodoros Kolokotronis. Athanasios Diakos. Georgios Karaiskakis. Emmanuel Pappas. Dimitrios Plaputas.
In the west side of the grove there is a bar and restaurant cafe ‘’Green Park’’. This place started in the 1930s after it was discontinued in 2008. Re-opened again in recent years and a wonderful place with a green garden and water facilities was created.
In the south side of the grove there is the monument of Goddess Athena, which was built in 1952 and it is dedicated to the British, Australian and New Zealand allies who lost their lives in Greece during the Second World War. That is why there are the corresponding flags on the monument.
Also in the grove there are 2 temples. The Holy Church of the Taxiarches and the Holy Church of Agios Charalambous. The Holy Church of the Taxiarches is the oldest building of the others, as one of the most impressive churches one can see in Athens. It is a medieval temple dating from the sixteenth or seventeenth century and is full of agiographies built on the foundations of an older temple. It is a cruciform temple with a cylindrical arch instead of a dome.
In the courtyard of the temple of Taxiarches there is the cenotaph of Alexandros Ypsilantis, probably designed by Leonidas Drosis in 1869, with the purpose of transferring the bones of the leader of the friendly company to it.
The church of Agios Charalambous is located to the east of the church of the Panmegisto Taxiarches on the eastern edges of the grove. In an inscription on a wall of the temple it is said that it was founded in 1929 by refugees from Asia Minor, who brought with them the icon of Saint Charalambous. Most of the illustrations were made by the Aivalio agiographer and writer Fotis Kontoglou and the collaborators of Spyridon Papanikolaou and Nikolaos Ioannou in successive phases in the time period 1954 to 1958.
