This piece is beautiful and is exactly what Adolphe Sax intended for this instrument. This piece of musical literature finally proves the saxophone can be just as good as any other instrument in the orchestra and gives the saxophone the spotlight it deserves.

That's what the saxophone is supposed to sound like it. It was invented to bridge the gap between woodwinds and brass and in the hands of the right player it does so very well. It's an instrument with more timbre diversity than probably any other

@@willmorris8198 . Well, I wouldn't say it is _supposed_ to sound like it, but it definitely can. Classical saxophone players are a tiny fraction of saxophone players. I am a saxophone player too and I am not looking for that sound. Nevertheless, I can definitely appreciate a good classical saxophone player when I hear one.

@@TheMyrkiriad I would say it is supposed to. The saxophone was invented in the 19th century for the purpose of being an orchestral instrument which bridged the gap between woodwinds and brass. Unfortunately, since it was invented in Germany, the instrument faced much prejudice from French musicians who threatened to walk out on composers who included saxophone or Adolph Sax's redesigned bass clarinet model. Jazz didn't even exist (at least in the form it did in the 30's) when the saxophone was invented. Today, thousands of high school and college band students are playing classical saxophone. It's a lot more common than you think. I play soprano, alto, tenor, and bari saxophone too in case you were wondering

We can agree that saxophone may have been invented so that a saxophonist could sound like this, yet, your original sentence « that’s what saxophone is supposed to sound like» still feels a bit too categorical for me. What does this mean ? Seems to imply that saxophonists should sound like this. Are we supposed to always play an instrument according to its original purpose back when it was initially invented ? Piano is used for all types of music, would you say it is supposed to sound like classical music ?

@@TheMyrkiriad I see your point. Let me rephrase. What I'm trying to say is that the sax was invented to sound like this and it was invented to be used in orchestras. Unfortunately due to music politics it never found a home in orchestral music and has since found a home in jazz and concert bands. Even in jazz, every jazz saxophone player in my opinion should have complete control over their tone in order to be able to switch on the dime from a very bright, raspy tone to a very round, smooth tone because different timbres work for different pieces. Amazing! Maria is who I listen to now for examples of good classical saxophone. Her tone is very even throughout the entire range, and she doesn't drench it with vibrato like a lot of the older players do.
