I've read rotary engines have a steeper learning curve than modern engines due to gyroscopic effects,making handling tricky.My hat's off to this pilot in that regard.

They often do... I suggest looking up videos on the Sopwith Camel taking off: they often rev the engine a few times to warm it up (like an old car) and the whole plane rocks and rolls like an earthquake is happening.

O Fokker DR1, uma avião com suas particularidades que são: o motor gira junto com a hélice, a hélice mede 2,80 m, a mínima e a máxima rotação de 400 rpm a 1.200 rpm, isso ocorre em mais ou menos uns 4 a 5 cm de avanço da mante, muito sensível porém não impossível, TAXI é mais ou menos assim; todo pedal pra esquerda e todo pedal para direita para virar DR!, um pouco de pedal para mover para esquerda e direita, parece avião né, se você deixar o Dr1 virar muito então terá de compensar muito porque ele engrena. A DECOLAGEM: pisar no freio até uns 800 rpm e soltar e completar na corrida, o freio não vai aguentar muito depois desses rpm, não tem visibilidade alinhe e tenta usar visão periférica porque a pista é estreita e a qualquer momento ele DR1 engrena e ai meu amigo não é fácil faze-lo voltar. Decolou a 70km/h e subindo entre 80km/h a 90km/h você esta subindo muito, muito, mito mesmo, sentindo-se em uma máquina de lavar roupa, muitas vibrações e também oscilações de altura mesmo com nariz para cima é que o vento faz o DR1 abaixar e levantar a calda, agora que seu batimento cardíaco passou dos 150 bpm, fique próximo a pista e tente relaxar, você decolou o lendário Fokker triplano, procure voar e curtir o võo, essa máquina esta em suas mãos, quando der olhe para baixo e veja seus amigos e faça curvas para direita e esquerda, você vai perceber que para a esquerda é mais rápida e fechada pronto você virou 90 graus com raio curto, mas para direita raio muito maior uns 20 porcento a mais e o Dr1 desce uns 300 pés, nossaaaaa, você esta conhecendo o DR1, muita coisa boa vira ainda,.

This is just seriously cool to watch a plane almost 120 years old fly. I know this is a modern built replica but still, it looks exactly like the original. Although the bar across the front of the pilot's chair confuses me? Did the original planes have that bar? I don't think they did but will do a little research and find out. Of course, as you say this video was taken by people with phones so it isn't a great video to watch but the content is great. Well, it appears the original plane did have this bar. The bar was used to mount the two machine guns.

The other videos of the LeRohne engine I have seen show the engine not able to idle down like this one. I was very impressed to see this one idling so low. With it starting so easy and slowly, looks like chocks were not necessary. According to what I have read about other working engines, rpm range is 600-1200rpm. This one appears to idle around 300. Very impressive! Do you have any information about the throttle setup on this engine?

Amazing airplane, amazing maiden, this was obviously a fun day. Having said that, I would be extremely concerned with the razor-thin sheet protruding into the cockpit as seen at 02:06. A bad landing, even a sudden stop after a ground loop could turn into a very bad day. Please say that part is *not* aluminum.
