"There's a lotta things about me you don't know anything about, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you shouldn't understand." "I don't understand." "You don't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel. So long, Dott." Fun Fact: Tim Burton's directorial feature debut. What Script Fact: Jan Hooks improvised the dialogue for her scenes as the Alamo tour guide. Bike Enthusiast Fact: Approximately 10 to 12 bicycles were built for the movie by the Pedal Pusher Bike Shop in Newport Beach, CA; a shop that specialized in vintage and classic bicycles and parts. They were offered $10,000 and no screen credit or screen credit only. The shop chose the money. The bike shop also got an autographed 8x10 glossy of Paul Reubens. Writing Example Fact: Paul Reubens said that he, Phil Hartman, and Michael Varhol had never written a screenplay prior to this film. They purchased a book by Syd Field on how to write screenplays and did exactly what the book said. As a result, this movie is sometimes used in screenwriting classes because it fits the screenwriting paradigm perfectly: The film is 90 minutes long and the script is 90 pages long. Music Enthusiast Fact: Tim Burton and Paul Reubens asked Danny Elfman as composer because Reubens was a big fan of Oingo Boingo, of which Elfman was lead singer and songwriter, and Burton agreed after attending some concerts. Elfman was originally apprehensive, having no formal music training, and declined the offer, but his manager told him to tell Burton that himself. Elfman gave Burton a ring, but at the last moment, he changed his mind and decided to accept the job. He was assisted by Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek as orchestrator. Elfman later said that hearing his music performed by an orchestra for the first time was one of the most thrilling experiences of his life.

And, I think Elfman has more credits for film scores now, than he ever had for writing songs with Oingo Boingo! Talk about "the rest is history".

Picking up cans so we could turn them in at the grocery store to buy lunch for the day. We got 5 cents a can or bottle. You could buy a sandwich for a buck fifty. He parlayed an improv character into a play, then an HBO special, leading to this movie. As adults, we'd hadn't seen this kind of craziness before - it was hysterical! @@artrock101 Yeah, I only saw him in those, friend, but from what I remember his original Pee Wee performed adult material & I guess is how probably Chong discovered him? Don't know if you're a big fan of Cheech & Chong, but Chong was actually the genius mastermind. I didn't know this for years. There's a great Joey Diaz interview & must-see for any fan. I was blessed to catch Cheech & Chong on their reunion tour '10(?), & even though was a dream come true, & they were fantastic, they were old.😅 But not knowing Chong's story, he came solo to our local Zanies in '93. I got tix not having a clue how he could pull any of it off, only to have my mind completely blown! It was even better than seeing the reunion! He was still "Chong" with black hair & beard. Since everyone knew the bits he just used members of the audience & did improv. For instance the "FiFi" dog bit he pulled a hot chick from the audience!😅 He also pulled out his guitar, had a mini concert, & jammed every song I knew with crowd singing along. Got to jam with Chong!🤘😎 On that Diaz interview he talks about his days on Motown records before he bought a club in Canada & started comedy. Micheal Jackson/Jackson 5's very first gig was opening for Chong's band!🤣🤣🤣 I've never thought about trying to look up old Reubens/Pee Wee early routines, but may be on here somewhere? Rock On! 🤘🌎❤

The part where he's the hotel desk clerk at the end always cracks me up. It's perfectly in character how he's mouthing everyone else's lines and totally geeking out on the movie-making process. Also a bit of genius casting Morgan Fairchild - essentially the hottest and (slightly) nastiest TV star of the era - as Dottie. This movie has a lot of adult-level Easter eggs like that.

Just so ya know ... Satan's Helpers = a nod to The Hell's Angels. BTW, the actor that played Kevin Morton in this movie is Jason Hervey. He played Fred Savage's brother, Wayne Arnold in the TV series, The Wonder Years. He also had a role in Back To The Future and Back To School (as the Young Thorton Melon, Rodney Dangerfield's character's younger self). Dottie was played by E. G Daily (Elizabeth Daily) and had lots of roles in a lot of movies and I believe, at age 62, she's still very active and acting today. My favorite movie with her is Better Off Dead, but she was a very successful singer with a few top 10 hits and even did a lot of songs for movie soundtracks.

In the movie at the end PW and Dottie were James Brolin (father of Josh Brolin and married to Barbara Streisand) and Morgan Fairchild. They were big back then and it was a tribute to Peewee's popularity for them to do this. Morgan is in one of my guilty pleasures The Seduction, a creepy stalker flick. Dee Snider is the lead singer on the hood of the car with the long blonde hair. Twisted Sister did what the church ladies considered evil bad influence music. Dee went to testify to Congress and shocked everyone by giving one of the smartest defenses of free speech. A cool dude. I still have my Peewee doll that talks when you pull the string. 😍

James Brolin total 80’s heartthrob! Even 10 year old me was like 😍😍😍. I was going to grow up and marry him! My mum was a huge fan! Even now she’ll try to remind me of something we watched together when I was a kid and always say “James Brolin was in it!”, I’m like, “he was in practically everything we watched back then…”. We watched this movie so much the vhs would blur and crackle at the large Marge scene and the pet shop fire, it died one day in rewind but tangled in the player. We lived without a video player for a month. Longest month ever! It cost me and my brother a weeks paper round wages to fix it (£10). I recouped the loss by doing 3 Sunday rounds/routes in one morning! One particular route had a massive, creepy Victorian mansion with statues at the bottom of the steps. I was afraid of statues, still am ngl, I tried to run so fast up those stairs! The huge door opened and I thought I was done for! Just the owner lol took his papers, he had 5 every Sunday and gave me a tip for delivering early(had to get it out of the way first) £5! Tipping was unusual except at Christmas and that amount was equivalent to my lunch at school for the next week or my half of the repair. I made another 50p tip, got into another scary situation(scary to me anyway), chased by a mad dog and got £12 for the rounds so I was up enough to get another copy of the movie. Good times and worth it! I went on my own adventure so I could watch PeeWee with my brothers 😊

The impact this movie had cannot be overstated. For one, it's straight up perfect, flawless. Loaded with talent, perfect pacing, It's basically a roadtrip movie, something very popular in the 80s. I know I saw it like 3 times, had to re-see it with whoever I could drag to it. It's very important to realize that Pee Wee as a character had sort of passed through several incarnations of "who it was for." Originally, it was an off stage humor thing, some cable tv specials, highly suggestive at points, tailored for college age or so. As popularity exploded, he made this movie and tried to open up audiences to kids as well, while still including a broad humor for all ages. He ended up making a kids' show, openly intended for kids, but to people who knew, there was definitely still cheeky innuendo buried in there for original fans who knew what was going on. Anyway, weirdo characters were popular in the 80s. Pee Wee Herman, Ed Grimley, Emo Philips... weird was very, very in.

It’s pretty hard to get the quirky, random humor of this movie and tv show unless you were a kid in the 80s. Pee Wee’s off beat, weird humor was very refreshing at that time, when mainstream kids shows were kind of straightforward and predictable. I mean I’m from the era of Mr Rogers Neighborhood, and Rubens’ character used that stage format and turned it upside down.

Satanic Panic was a thing in the 80's. Everything was given the side eye including music and artists such as Twisted Sister who we see making a music video in this movie. That biker gang was most likely a nod to the notorious Hells Angels which all kids in the 80's knew. That satanic crap was all over the place and we used to just crack jokes about it and try to figure out how to play our records backwards. I love Pee Wee. ❤ R.I.P.

One of my favorite childhood movies! I have a mug with Pee Wee's face on it that says, "AND KNITTING, AND KNITTING, AND KNITTING" until the font gets too small to read. 😂😂😂

Lots of us adults joined th Pee Wee fanclub BEFORE his tv show. He had an ad in the classified section of Rolling Stones for years to join his fan club. I knew him mostly from hie Cheech and Chong cameo "I thinks they are Iranians!!" But when they gave him a CHILDREN'S show we were all flabbergasted.

This was Tim Burton's first full length movie, as well as the first film Danny Elfman did the score for. As far as Gen X kids, we saw whatever our parents went to see. We had already seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, Don't Go in the Basement, Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, The Omen, The Thing and even Faces of Death 1 and 2 by the time this one came out.

I was in 9th grade when this hit theaters. EVERYONE started doing "The Pee-Wee Dance," including trying to walk on our toes. I still do his knock when visiting my best friend. And as far as his bust, we all forgave him when he returned in glorious fashion at the MTV awards and his first line was "Heard any good jokes lately?" BTW, if you haven't seen the picture floating around the internet, the Dinosaur he watched the sunrise in with Simone was repainted so it's wearing his suit as a tribute. RIP Pee-Wee.

I saw this around the age of 5 back in the 80s. And yes, I ran out the living room several times, throughout the movie. But I would always come back inside since it was a Pee Wee movie. I was only acting brave because I was with my cousins. But I would have never had the guts to sit through it alone. Still love this movie. It's so great. RIP Mr. Paul Reubens.

My three favorite moments, counting down order: 3. Pee-wee pulling off the tape during the breakfast machine scene, and both the "Owwww!" and the giggle afterwards, because of the utter randomness of it. I love "just because" jokes in movies. 2. "What exactly leads you to believe the Soviets were involved?" 1. The entire "no basement" dialogue between Pee-wee and Simone at the bus station, because of how defeated his tone is.

The waitress that was in the T-Rex mouth with Pee-Wee is also the woman who played Mrs. Cobbelpot along side Pee-Wee who played Mr. Cobblepot at the beginning of Batman returns.

Watching other people get introduced to Large Marge is the best part of this movie for me. Not even laughing, it's typically just genuine and that's the kind of content I'm here for.

Something I noticed the first time I played through GTA V. Is that the music playing during Trevor's bad trip during Barry's Strangers and Freak mission, is the same music that plays during Pee-Wee's nightmare sequences in this movie. Appropriate, since both Trevor's mission and Pee-Wee's nightmares both involves clowns.

Growing up watching the Large Marge scene, as a kid, I can tell you, kids were not scared at all. We all loved that scene and used to recite that scene. I think Pee-wee's Big Adventure is also probably the reason why I've probably had so many bruises and cuts after doing bike stunts especially after watching this movie 😂.

Paul Reuben came up with the character name Pee Wee Herman after the small Pee Wee Harmonica he had since childhood. Fun Fact: after WWII Japan needed to make money to boost their economy. The Pee Wee Harmonicas was one of the many products they made and was exported. It was made during the American occupation of Japan after the war (1945-1952). So on the labels of those exported products it reads "made in occupied Japan". Many products that was sold with those the "made in occupied Japan" on them became a very popular sought out items by collectors.

Yes, this absolutely was a kid's movie! I was 9 when it came out and loved it! I used to do the pee wee laugh all the time. I still use his "Andy" yell to a coworker named Andy, but nobody knows what the hell I'm talking about. 😂 P.S. The band in the movie lot is Twisted Sister and the woman in the biker bar that grabs him is the legendary Mistress of the Dark, Elvira.

Paul Reubens invented the Pee-Wee character for his stage act : comedy for adults that was a parody of kids' TV shows. Then HBO picked it up. For adults. Then this movie was made but it still wasn't really a kids' show (as you noticed, EOM). Then after the movie made the Pee-Wee character "famous," some TV execs decided they could make Reuben's schtick into an actual Saturday morning kids' TV show (by toning down and removing the adult humor). This is why Pee-Wee is considered by many to be "kid stuff." Even the TV series wasn't fully "cleaned up" though. Reubens was somehow able to keep a subtle, subversive vibe in there. Probably wouldn't fly today but, as you say, the last half of the '80s/first half of the '90s was a different, more permissive time in TV world. An era unique to itself, really. Also, the band filming the music video that Pee-Wee wrecks on the studio backlot is Twisted Sister. 🤘

Let's just say in the early 80's "the world", "Stuff" and "Humor" was ... different. So the sillyness of Pee Wee was a welcome funny experience, away from the seriousness of the times. Plus... everyone was smoking some fantastic... Oooooo Weeeee, back then. Which explains a lot about so much of the 80's. LoL. BTW... I knew Large Marge was going to get us a shuddup! (Thank you for that😝)

You might recognize Elizabeth Daily (Dottie) as the voice of Tommy in the Rugrats. There's actually a sequel to this movie from 2016 starring Reubens as Pee Wee again directed by Judd Apatow. It's not quite AS funny in my opinion, but it was a really awesome return to form for the character of Pee Wee and showed that Reubens hadn't lost any of his ability. The band that Santa and Godzilla crash into is also Twisted Sister (you might know their track "We're Not Gonna Take It")

What?? Man, I didn't know he passed. I grew up hearing him being referenced a lot. But I never watched a Pee-Wee Herman movie until one night, about 8 years ago, I was hanging out at a friend's house. We passed out on different couches, and his girlfriend passed out in their bedroom, and I randomly woke up and the auto-timer for the TV turned to a different channel. I just laid there and watched until Pee-Wee Herman came on. I thought it looked like a newer movie, but I honestly don't know. It was silly, but I enjoyed it. The only thing I can really remember is a scene where he's eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with a girl while on a picnic. Lol
