Great news. I was staying about 3 blocks from Notre Dame when it caught fire. We saw and smelled the smoke. People immediately went to see what was going on. We watched from about 200 yards away as Notre Dame burned. It was literally like watching history go up in flames.
@walterulasinksi70315 ай бұрын
The roof framing of Notre Dame was of oak timbers as was the main framework of the spire the roof covering was of toxic lead. The ceiling inside however is of vaulted limestone. For this portion of the transept vaulted ceiling, every stone must be cut and fitted precisely or the ceiling will fall down. This is not just the vaulted ribs, many of which need to be recreated but every infill stone. Only then can the temporary supports both under the vaulted ceiling but those outside under the exterior wall flying buttresses. It is one of the great engineering feats of the middle ages, that structures of this type will stand by themselves if every piece is fitted with precision and why the public prefers that this happen using as long as it takes despite any politician.

Honestly, the fire shouldn't have been seen as a tragedy, nobody died, and we all knew it would be rebuilt. Sure, it took a while, but the building has new history to its legacy. Instead, view it as a sign that even if the politics around a project like this might be controversial and complex, the trades people who can actually get it done never went away, and if anything, can apply what they learnt here elsewhere in the world.
@frontenac50834 ай бұрын

@@frontenac5083 True, but that's just part of the history now, and will simply be a footnote in the building's history. The craftmen who got it done in the end still existed, regardless of there being a deadline for the Olympics or not. In ten years time, you probably wont even remember a delay.

Instead of rebuilding the roof trusses in steel to avoid fire and lightning problems, wood was used. For the money available, the trusses could have used stainless steel and would have lasted thousands of years. Poisonous lead was used for the roof. Next, the TITANIC will be rebuilt without enough lifeboats for historical accuracy. I guess no changes were wanted for fear it would be messed up like they did with the Louvre.

Have they put any fire breaks in the roof this time? If there had been any previously the fire would have been much less devastating. York Minster learned this lesson in its fire, but apparently France paid no attention.

I'm surprised they used oak again to restore it... hope they've taken fire safety into account this time
@owensmith75305 ай бұрын
@@modgal York Minster also used oak again after its fire, for the same reason. Which is they know how the building will behave over hundreds of years with an oak roof. If they use something else they don't know what will happen in future. Oak can accommodate some movement in the walls or vaults for example, whereas steel cannot. Also steel softens very fast in fire and if there were a small fire oak would remain strong whereas steel would collapse. But yes I hope they've put some fire prevention measures in; having firebreak walls to partition the space into sections is very effective for example.
