I'm so happy for you, brother! Our stories are similar. My father went to Laos with others in 1989. Not to rescue his comrades from the Lao jungle, but deceived by the Hmong politics of 1975. My father was wise and clever, but not smart. He could not return after the Ban Vinai refugee camp closed in 1992. My mother took us to the United States. He was trapped in the Lao jungle for 17 years, hunted day and night by the Lao government. Most of the people who went with him either died or escaped to Thailand. My father surrendered to the Lao government in 2005. I went to visit him in 2006, pretending to be a relative studying in Vientiane, and tuaj tham hluas nkauj hauv nws lub zos. He did not recognize me as his son. I stayed in a hotel for a week, but visited him every day, took him out, bought him things, and then I told him that I was his son from the United States. The son he left to die in the refugee camp. All he said to me was "I'm sorry". I wanted to cry, but I held back my tears. I also told him. After he left us, my brothers and sisters, six of us. We survived by eating rats, spiders and dirt. Our mother almost died of malnutrition. But, thank God! We were able to come to the US. After I told him I was his son, I stayed with him in his hut for a week and left without saying goodbye. He passed away in 2009.

Fathers and their sons. Bet he's beyond proud of how you've turned out. Old school parents, especially dads that have gone through hell and back, aren't great with showing emotions, so when that little side of softness comes out from them, it's because they couldn't contain it any longer. Happy for you bro. My pops never said that he was proud of us, but the words he relayed to his friends, and those around him, made us realize that he was brimming with pride of how his children turned out. I bet he's singing about you all day. It takes a little bit to understand old school parents.

Very similar to my grandpa's story. My dad's dad went to the war and never returned. Then, my dad was still a young teenager. Ua Tsaug, koj tseem los qhia koj txiv rau peb os. Back in HS, I've only met your mom and siblings. I remember, when you took me to roller town. You raced a kid and your wheels broke off and the other kid won. It was an incredible fun time. Memories forever.
