It's not to do with David Mitchell, if that was the case then he wouldn't get the recognition he does for Peep Show where he's brilliant in scenes without him. It's that his strength is more as a comedy actor than a comedian. I think he even said himself in an interview that he can sit down and write something funny but he's not one of those off the cuff hilarious all the time types.
