I listened to this on Radio 3 over forty years ago and it made me less lonely.

What makes Richardson's performance so special is his sheer joy in it - the absolute zest for every aspect of the role and himself in it! This is infectious across the years and a superb demonstration of what great theatre is about.

Brilliant acting by Ralph Richardson here and brilliant cameos by Laurence Olivier as the Troll King "next you must loose your Christian britches up here in the dover we show our riches" and as the Button Moulder. Loved this Roman thankyou so much ☺

Olivier's voice as the button moulder is unusually deep. With all respect to the awesome performances of the actors, the story is a little sickly. At least it ends reasonably happy. The lesson is gotten across, but it would be so much better without the unnecessary bizarreness.

Maria Therese It's a simple story of wayward youth (everyman) told in the style of a folk tale. Grieg's music draws on folk melodies and that was why he and Ibsen collaborated on the project. The bizarreness you complain of is typical of the folk idiom (eg brothers Grimm).
