Yes! There are very few who can come close, and I would argue that there are none within their genre. Pavarotti, Carolli, in opera also once in a lifetime kind of voices. Journey has always been a solid number 1 in my book, with The Eagles, Chicago, and Phil Collins alone or in Genesis are close behind, but Steve is just on another level.

Faithfully is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful power ballads made. Journey had other great power ballads like Open Arms & When You Love a Woman. Steve Perry's voice was the sound of Journey's success. All others, even though their voices were good, were just mostly trying to duplicate that iconic sound. Steve was rportedly self-taught with no formal vocal lessons. He's described as a counter tenor or high tenor altino w/incredible vocal range and a type of rounded operatic falsetto (his description). Wikipedia stated Perry's range was F#2 - A5, but there's that famous G5 and incredible run he did in Lay it Down. Even Brian May of Queen said he had that "voice in a million". It's not just the voice, but the emotional delivery, as well. From what I understand, Perry was also the main writer of Journey songs in his time with them. When I learned that Sam Cooke was his first real influence, it made sense. There are some Sam Cooke songs that I can definitely hear where Steve pulled some technique, etc. I regret never having been able to see Journey in concert while Steve was with them, but my Mom & brother went to at least one concert in the early 80s. Even today, with severe dementia, I can pull up a song with Steve Perry, and she lights up.

Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain were a songwriter match made in power ballad heaven. Send Her My Love is another one I've discovered recently. Cain says he was having lunch with a friend who mentioned he'd run into one of Cain's old girlfriends. He told him "send her my love" and then thought, that could be a song.

Another point for the touring aspect with this song….you might have noticed Steve Perry on a corded phone. We didn’t have cell phones or laptops… anything like that, back then… so touring had to be a little tougher.

What WHAAAAAAAT!! I was traveling to Virginia from Rhode island for a family vacation to Bush Gardens. I remember a lot about that 1990 road trip. Mostly how long that car drive took. But most importantly I remember the music, the radio stations turning to static as we approached another state or town that the signal couldn’t reach. We ended up in Maryland where the radio came in crystal clear. Don’t remember the station but remember the music was pop hits. My mom and Dad are now divorced but when I was 10 they were still in love and married. This song came on, I remember my dad would always have his arm around the top of the passenger chair. He would gently stroke my mom’s hair and I just felt happiness. They always showed affection and love to each other. So as this song was playing I watched the sights out the window, took in the sun rays that screamed through the backseat window and just felt the excitement of the moment. I’ll never forget that trip, that moment and this song will always take me right there, in the family wagon, stuffed in the back seat with my brother and sister. Music is magic. Though time changes us, relationships change and people fall out of love like my parents did……the song remains the same. So when I hear it everything is still as it was then.😢

I saw them on this tour. I remember going behind the civic center and seeing all those trucks and buses. One bus said "Journey" and the other said "Voyager". I saw Neal, the guitarist, laughing and kidding around with some of the roadies. Bryan Adams was their opening act, as he was an up and coming new artist at the time. He used the F-word a LOT, so when Journey came out, Steve made a comment about Bryan being an amazing artist with a bit of a potty mouth. I'm positive they all have potty mouths, but Steve knew his audience, and he knew that there were a lot of parents with their kids out there, such as in my case as well. He was trying to reel the audience back in. Great concert! ...btw, when Jon is looking in the mirror at the pic of the woman, that's his first wife, Tane Cain, and she has several songs here on YT, her biggest is probably "Holdin' On".

Hey BP, they’re currently touring with Def Leppard and the Steve Miller Band. Obviously, Steve Perry isn’t singing with them but Arnel is a great singer as well. It is well worth seeing both bands if you can. I waited 35 years to see either of them in concert and finally did a couple of years ago. Yup, it's a power ballad and it filled arenas nation wide! I am sure this resonated with any band or solo artist that was touring and any military personnel that wre deployed. This was a mega hit back in the day! You can still tour, just do it in a limited capacity. Steve Perry will go down in history as one of the greatest vocalists of all time!! Unfortunately, he will not receive those accolades until he is dead, then everyone will give him posthumous rewards and praise him to the sky and back, instead of giving them to him now!! All the songs were recorded live; in concert, in a hotel room, on the bus (you can hear the motor gearing down at one point).
