A week ago, I contacted some golden old Niuean singers and artists living in New Zealand to suggest we do something to celebrate the coming 50th anniversary of the Niue Constitution Celebration.
The first to answer my call was Jay Poumale, a D.J. who produces 50 Niuean albums of Niuean songs from his recording studio. That is inspiring!
He shared this old Niuean PEKA song, which instantly captivated me. Its rhythm and the beauty of the Niuean language chant were captivating, and the dance beat got me in the mood.
We talked about our creative process journey and our stories as Niueans living in New Zealand and N.N.S. 50 ("NIUI" NIU SILA 50) was born from our joyful conversation on Monday. I said, "Let's do this." We filmed the video on Tuesday, and now it's ready for your eyes.
We are Niueans living in New Zealand, but we will never forget our home and villages back in Niue.
To all our Niuean people here in N.Z., Niue, and worldwide, have a PEKA day, and happy Niue Language Week.
Hau!
