3:35 regarding the dentist statement. Never thought you'd out yourself like this bro, in case you didn't know you can be fine as long as the bacteria that makes cavities isn't introduced to your mouth environment you can get away with a lot less toothcare, however it should be noted that most people have this bacteria and it's shared as easily as kissing or drinking from the same cup/straw as someone else and getting some of their spit in your mouth. If you haven't been having teeth problems despite poor tooth care theres a good chance that you just don't have the bacteria that cause it yet.

Not using toothpaste really isn't that weird. Back in the olden days people didn't have toothpaste and mostly used water. It's more about cleaning up the food buildup in your teeth. Toothpaste itself is more for stain removal and polishing them.

I have to add context, though. The food we eat in the modern era incites bacterial growth more than what people in the past have eaten (far more sugars and other foods that are easier to be broken down) and in the era before toothpaste and after the development of processed food, teeth decay was an endemic problem for many, many cultures. Toothpaste also has compounds that aid in prevention of decay, like fluorides.
