Despite it being the #1 rule in MineCraft to not do that, with feather falling and high protection/fire protection on diamond armor, it shouldn't be that dangerous for her anymore.. I still won't do it on my hardcore world for fear of falling into a cave full of mobs, though.

It really should only be a rule if you're new to the game. If you're decked out in full gear and have enough experience, digging straight down will rarely punish you and you're gonna know pretty much when it's safe to dig straight up.
