In last week's edition of Plant One On Me, we got a tour of Hortus Botanicus, but what I left out was their (ahem, drum roll please....)
Private Pelargonium (geranium) collection, which is world class! I have to say that I live for tours like this, as these collections are more behind-the-scenes than for public viewing. Back in February when I was there, they had JUST acquired this collection, and since that time, there haven't been any camera crews in there, so YOU'RE THE FIRST TO SEE THIS COLLECTION.
I hope it opens your eyes to the breadth of Pelargoniums, as it had mine!

Nothing beats the old humble geranium on a South facing balcony in Southern Europe. By far my favourite outdoor plants.

I found a german garden book named: "every plant exept gerania". I never liked pelargonium/geranium as well as it is the "granny flower" here in Germany. But last summer I've seen a very big, pink pelargonium behind a shop window. The door and wood parts of the window were a greyish dark blue and in the window there was only the big pot with the even bigger plant, very healthy and thriving. The pink matching the greyish blue perfectly. That's what got me to love pelargonium. Now I have three of them from cuttings and there will be more, I promise! :-)

Brilliant, brilliant collection. So lucky to have a peek and tour, and thank you so much for sharing it with us. The range of the genus suggests it is Gondwanan in its evolution - it came onto the scene as Gondwana was breaking up, when just the bottom of Africa was still connected to the Gondwanan continent, giving it just enough time to drop a few species into Australia and Madagascar before the separation prohibited any further dispersal. Awesome stuff. I've a native Australian pelargonium growing in the backyard. It is very typical of what we picture pelargoniums to be.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m really wondering am I watching for the plants or am I watching for all these interesting characters who seem so happy to share their knowledge and collections and love with all of us. I think “plant people” are starting to turn out to be some of my favorite people. :)

Wow again! I have a pelargonium inside right now. It's Winter here in the Chihuahuan desert of far west Texas and since bringing it inside in November, that was our first cold snap, I have pruned it since it was getting leggy under the grow lights and now I have three from rooting two of the stems. It was amazing. I've never rooted anything in my life. One of the stems was with leaf, the other one was just the stripped 'stick' bottom half and it rooted as well. I had no idea there were those varied ones in the video. The one with the thorns would be right at home here in the desert. Wonderful video!

Hi Summer, so I watched the video and I have to say that I really enjoyed the interview. A couple of ideas stick out...the part where you commented about the breadth of the genus represented before you. Excellent point. The differing leaf styles the thick succulent stems to the semi woody, sub-shrub looking species. Quite impressive. Oh, I liked the comment about the Begonia looking variety...good call. And the idea about a Senecio ish looking type. Oh, and don’t even get me started about the Older Feller that you interviewed. Now he rocked! Yes you could see the passion and the depth of knowledge on Pelargoniums. What fun. I could see that he really enjoyed your enthusiasm and the poinient questions. Could you imagine being in the field with him? What he could see and point out and explain, wow. Anyway, I am rambling on...but as always, great interview, you ask good questions, you keep the Interviewee on topic. Very well done 👍 I have a few ideas of nurseries to see....🤪

Thank you very much for the information. I was not aware that geraniums were considered succulents and that they came from more arid regions of the world. That explains why my geranium never seems to wilt when other do if I take too long between watering.

I have a question!! I have a frosted window in my shower that I want to hang a plant in front of for more privacy but it can't take up much outward room since it is in a shower - so maybe something that hangs down more. Is there a plant that would like an area like this?

The Hortus in Amsterdam is the worse garden to visit in this country. You would see more interesting plants just visiting one of the garden centers around the city. Above all this, having such a collection and keep it closed to public is like not having it..another reason not to visit that garden. You want to see a really nice Botanical garden? Go to Utrecht, Leiden and even Delft has got something more interesting then the Hortus in Amsterdam...Cheers

I love and subscribe to the youtube but was immediately upset to hear that this plant work was done in South Africa during apartheid, during the murder and imprisonment of Black activists, and the inhumane treatment of the Black majority. How to understand great botany in such an oppressive environment?
