Diego Maradona and Pele are inarguably two of the great players in the history of the game. But they also have an eternal rivalry, punctuated by arguments and bitterness, and sustained by ego and vanity. In this video, James Montague charts the chronology of their unique, decades-long relationship.

If they mentioned Maradona off field problems... they should've mentioned how Pele's never acknowledge his own daughter, despite DNA saying otherwise. On her deathbed her final wish was to see her father.... Pele never went to see her. He was no saint either... but if you speak about Maradona's flaws, mention Pele's as well. Family is above anything... that is why Brazilians prefer Ayrton Senna rather than Pele.

Fred Vasquez The world LOVES to hate on Diego. He’s an easy target because he was a “bad boy” in the public eye compared to Pele (who was far from a saint as you mentioned). The fact remains Pele never carried a prominent EUROPEAN team from 0 to glory like DM did with Napoli, while simultaneously doing it with Argentina in the WC. I get so tired of the anti-Argentine and anti-Southern Italian bias in football, especially from the English lads. FORZA NAPOLI SEMPRE!!! D10S FOREVER!

Nice documentary, but you forgot something very important: Diego Maradona was the first important player to fight againts corruption on FIFA's authorities, the same people that now (20+ years after he started to battle against them) are being investigated by justice. And he was the biggest promoter of the first International Syndicate for footballers (the precedent for modern Fifpro). Pele was and always will always be on FIFAs side. All the people who criticizes Maradona talk about the cheating and the addictions and excess in his personal life, but he always used the power of his figure to fight for the ones that couldn't. He never forgot where he came from... And that's a reason why a lot of powerful people attack, dislike and criticize Maradona.

For people who don’t know; at 6:20, Maradona referred to “Senna” as in Ayrton Senna. Ayrton Senna was a Formula 1 driver who won 3 world drivers championships, and was regarded by many at the time (and some still now) as the greatest racing driver of all time. Many described him as having a god given talent unlike anyone before him as he performed many previously unthinkably great feats in his time in F1. He tragically died in a crash at the dark weekend of Imola 1994 but his legacy lives on as many still consider him the greatest Brazilian athlete alongside, or even ahead, of Pelé, as Maradona pointed out in his snide remark.

@penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli Zidane carried France by himself? Lol Are you mad? Bartez, Blanc, Desailly, Thuram, Lizerazu, Deschamps, Karembeu, Djorkaeff, Henry. That team was loaded.
@TheMeeesterT
@TheMeeesterT 4 жыл бұрын
@penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli not sure I agree with that. Barthez had the tournament of his career. Thuram went on to be one of the best defenders in the world and scored two great goals in one game. Lauren Blanc was a great central defender. Desailly was also a top defender. Lizarazu was widely regarded as the second best left back in the world at the time. Deschamps was the Juve captain. Djorkaeff, Pires & Dugarry were no slouches. The only problem they had were strikers who weren't clinical enough at that time but still went on to be world class. I'm not trying to start an argument just offering my point of view in that the France 98 squad was class and even without Zidane would have been one of the favourites in their home tournament. Zidane was on a level above everyone else but that team allowed him the freedom to express himself in front of a world class defensive unit.

I find the whole ‘They didn’t fulfil their potential’ idea rather infuriating, because it downplays the importance of discipline and mental fortitude to football. ‘If Maradona hadn’t taken drugs’ then he’d have been a different person and a better footballer but he wasn’t. A player’s mental attributes off the pitch are as much part of their footballing talent as their technical skill or creativity
@whitenbald
@whitenbald 4 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Footballer = Talent + Mentality. You know some people say "I could've made it as a professional"? I am sort of one of them - I played at a championship team's academy but I quit around the age of 14 because the pressure was too much. The physical talent and attributes were there, but the mental fortitude was not. I could never have coped with all the pressure from the fans and coaches! I cared way too much about what the manager thought of me rather than just playing for fun (which is when I played my best football)... so in conclusion I COULDN'T have made it pro, I didn't have the mentality!

Different era players. Both geniuses. My dad loved watching Pele when he was growing up but also really enjoyed watching Maradona as an adult. For him, both were amazing to watch but both different style of player. Who was better? Very subjective. For me Maradona was more highly skilled, better dribbler and more inventive. Pele was a better overall player as I have read that he was the reserve keeper for the team before substitutions were allowed and played in goals a few times, help defence a lot plus was more a team player in terms of doing everything on the pitch. This argument will never end. All subjective.

It is not fair to compare players of different eras. All sports became markedly more professional in the 80s and 90s. The players today who work grueling training sessions perfecting their craft under the watchful eyes of expert coaches and physical therapists and dietitians can physically perform at a level that earlier players could never dream of. But those earlier players were more often products of individual genius and inspiration and happenstance -- that they trained themselves to greatness is no small thing to consider.

Very well put together. I am from Naples. I have a good friend from Rio. We have this debate all the time and we came to the same conclusion. They are exact opposites but equals. They both overcame great economical struggles to become the best in the world for their time. Pele has always had speed and was always in great shape. He had the rhythm of the samba, the Ginga of capoeira, the dance that we all fell in love with, even with the subsequent Brazilian players like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Neymar. He was fun and exciting to watch along with the team around him. They refreshed a stale sport that was dominated by European countries. Maradona had alien talent. Nobody knows where his talent comes from. It is completely natural or unnatural, you pick. He was always a fat little slippery eel that pushed the limits to the edge for everything. He looked at it as if he wasn't riding on the edge, life is just too boring to live. As a kid, he would go play ball instead of doing his chores and take the beatings from his dad. That is the Italian in him. He was born with an unconscious ability to control any ball, any size with his feet, predominantly his left. There is a video of him when he was at Napoli juggling a foosball. Platini said, what Zidane can do with a ball, Maradona can do with an orange. Call it a gift from God, call it nature, call it genes, call it what you want, nobody has come along with that type of talent. Not Messi, not Cristiano Ronaldo. Maybe Ronaldinho, and he played futsal as a kid. He had his problems off the pitch as well, still has those problems today but that doesn't make what he did with the Brazilian side and Barca nothing. There are only a few players that played for Barca and were applauded by Real Madrid fans, Maradona and Ronaldinho are among them.

9:09 I am sorry but this is a huge generalization. To claim brazilians love Garrincha more than Pele because brazilians don't like winners as much is a big reach. Ayrton Senna was one of the most competitive sport professionals ever. I'd argue he is more popular in Brazil than Pelé, and he is way more competitive than Pelé ever was. Senna was the toxic competitive type, he had a big ego and he wanted to win no matter what, on his terms. Some people in Brazil don't like Pelé as much because he is an international superstar, brazilians hate people that pretend they don't know where they come from, people that don't talk a lot about their roots. Regardless, Pelé is incredibly loved here in Brazil, is he worshipped like Maradona is in Argentina? No, but he is up there at the Pantheon.
@ricardocima
@ricardocima 4 жыл бұрын
@Pedro Guedes We agree that he's the best but I would agree that Senna is the most beloved of them all, surely because of his tragic early death. I would go further and say that Zico is the most beloved and respected player in Brazil. By far amongst the players.

@Lucas-ts3wz 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, Senna is not as popular as he was in the 90's, I'm from just one generation after Senna and he doesn't mean as much for me, specially cuz Brazil is not even relevant in the F1 anymore. Pelé on the other hand is still the greatest after many decades that he stopped playing, I mean dude is one of the post cards of Brazil aside with Tom Jobim's Garota de Ipanema and Jorge Ben's Mas que Nada.

Great writing. I remember these feuds. I'm sure if this was a 90 minute documentary you would cover that, but the awards from FIFA were given amongst corruption scandals (as always), with the clear intention to distract the audience of what was going on with some of the white collars of the game. Let's not forget that if Maradona had led Argentina to a World Cup title in 1990, it would be their third title, just like Brazil at the time, so that added up to the dispute. Since 1990, the Argentine national team have derailed instead (because of their own misleadings, specially with AFA). It's nice that this wasn't about choosing sides, since it's almost impossible to assess who was the greatest player. This is football, not and exact science, so polarized concepts shouldn't be eligible. Thanks, it made my Saturday night!

"Pelé only played against farmers" Meet Franz Beckenbauer, shepard from Munich Lev Yashin, mailman Jairzinho, 9 year old "Pelé played when there was no offside rule" This is not true, it was implemented years before his first match "If he was so good why did he never move to europe" At first, He didnt to because the brazilian league was the strongest in the world back in the early 60s. Declined offers from Real Madrid ans AC Milan. Then the dictatorship that governed brazil declared him a living national treasure so that he wouldnt leave. In the mid 70s, he thought about trying new things before retirement and had offers from FC Barcelona and NY Cosmos. Barcelona had more prestige, but pele already won everythibg he wanted and cosmos offered way more cash, so he went to play in the usa where he became somewhat of a Proto David Beckham moving to LA Gakaxy, but way bigger. It'd be like if CR7 decided to go pkay in the MLS. George Best, Franz Beckenbauer, one of the english bobbys from man united (i dont remember if it was charlton or moore)....many stars went on to play in america following his singning. "His goal count is bonkers" Yes it is. He exxagerated the numbers. Lied. But if you count friendlies (which i do for every player from before the 80s), he scoree over 900. Discounting then, almos 700. So yeah, lying about the goal count thing did more damage than good to his image but hes still one of the best free kick tajers of all time, one of the best dribblers of all time.....amazing, complete footbaler. Seriously, instead of just blatanly trying to dismiss him try to watch some videos of him playing. He made eusebio look like an idiot by playing 1-2 with his legs. Scored a hell of a goal in a world cup final at the age of 17. 60 years passed till mbappe broke his record. If you think messi is better, totally fine. Messi is spectacular. But Pelé was 100% world class too, unquestionably top 3 best players of all time.

Maradona was by far the better footballer but also a person of extremes and bad choices. From Castro to cocaine. Still the best player of the 20th century.

Both Pelé and Maradona are in my Top 3.. I would rate Pelé slightly higher than Maradona mainly in terms of consistency and longevity...but not many know how clutch Pelé actually was....especially in World Cups.. He has the Most Assists in World Cup History 3 Goals and 3 Assists in 2 WC Finals (Maradona has only 1 assist in 2 WC finals) The most mindblowing fact...He has either scored a goal or provided an assist in EVERY SINGLE WORLD CUP MATCH HE PLAYED....so he was in the scoresheet in every World Cup game....if that isn’t clutch I dunno what is..

penaldo choking against lazio, ac milan and napoli... He only scored 1 goal in the 1962 tournament because he got injured for the rest.. Please don’t tell me you are blaming an injury as a flaw in Pelé’s resume..

Q. Who was a better footballer? A. Maradona was a coke-head. Sums up the comment section up until now. Smh. You can love both, you know. Football wouldn't have been the same without either.

It's interesting that Maradona is always depicted as a Dark Figure, when he was the most human of those superstars (like drug problems or "controversial" political views weren't a thing for common people). But i believe the correct way to see both lives and careers is the opposite way; the people voted for Maradona to be the best, he was the cultural icon of the sport, and people from Argentina and Naples love him for eternity (a sentiment shared by everyone who feels outcast by society). You say Maradona was corrupted and Pele was clean, but who was beside Pele, FIFA, Qatar moguls and President Menem, the most hated and corrupt president in my country. People know very well why the feel for Diego what they feel, and the same for Pele, who was always a mascot for corrupt entities. So, you never know the true face of Pele, whilst Maradona was always (for good and bad) transparent.

These debates will never end because you can never really compare players and teams in different eras because of how rapidly technology/fitness/tactics are evolving in the game.

Indeed. By direct comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are better than either Pelé or Maradona. But would Pelé or Maradona have been better if they'd been playing now? It's impossible to say.

@@drsmart0078 maradonna will only be remembered for his great goal against England, and the one that shouldn't of been...in other words, imo he was a dirty cheating, fat drug taking cheating bastard....bit like Louis saurez, who repeatedly bit opponents & handled the ball on the line to cheat to keep his team in the world cup....and best liked a drink....but was the original superstar of football.
