I ended up selecting the M600 after much internal debate. I decided the features I wanted most were the pen material, a gold nib, and that classic green stripe colour, in a price range I could afford (the expense is much more in Canadian dollars). The size also suits my smaller {female} hand. As much as I would love the pretty nib of either the 800 or 1000, the extra expense just didn’t make either work for me. They really are incredible to write with. Recently I pulled out my 200 (I have one in blue and one in brown marble - luscious!) and even those with their steel nibs feel great to write with! Great video! Tfs your review, comparison, and preference.

Thank you for this timely video. Having just returned from the Ohio Pen Show the first week end in November, the M800 is regularly on my mind and hand. I bought my M800 Stone Garden in the Pandemic Summer when a few NOS pens of this 2017 Ltd Ed showed up. No nib choices, M only. So as a XF/F guy I bought the medium. To wide and sloppy wet for me. So I took the Stone Garden to this year’s Ohio Show, my first since 2019. I had Linda Kennedy of Indy-Pen-Dance grind the medium down a bit and turn it into a Cursive Italic. Beautiful, Linda has done 3 other CIs for me over the years all great. I am looking forward to many fun years of letter writing with this Ci M800 Stone Garden. While I have plans to acquire a M1000, it has not happened yet. My Flock at present consists of 2 M200s, a M400, 2 M600s and the M800. If I had to choose now, I would say the M600s are the ideal Souveran for my daily writing. Thanks for the fun video.

Thanks for the great comparison, Dr. Jones. I came to the same conclusion about the size when I was choosing several years ago. Ended up with three M 800’s. Nibs are medium, broad, and broad-Italic. Had to order from Cult Pens in the UK to get the broad-Italic: wasn’t available from anyone here in the states. Good service, and even free ink! Got the medium nib on a special edition burnt orange body. Anything reminiscent of a MontBlanc Hemingway! Of course I could interchange the nibs should I desire. The other two are the green and the blue stripes. Technically one can see the ink level. Can sometimes do that with the green stripe, but can never quite see the ink in the blue one. Lovely writers, all. Will probably always wonder about the nib on the M 1000. Lovely spaces in the outro. Say more about the train and the dinosaur, if you please!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the M1000 and M800. I have both models and enjoy using them both about every other day (depending on where I am at and which is closer at hand). I have the M800 with EF, F, M, and OM nibs, and the M1000 with EF, and F nibs. For the M1000 I have, the EF nib writes somewhere between an extra fine and a fine. The M1000 F writes more like a medium nib for my style of writing. The M800 EF is closer to an extra fine in my other brands, but if I apply just a little more pressure it will write like a fine. My fine nib is still a fine point, but tends to be almost a medium, depending on the pressure applied. For me it comes down to how much pressure I use when I write, and the angle I hold the pen. When using a fountain pen, I use a very light touch, and hold the pen at a flatter angle (maybe 30 to 45 degrees to the horizontal). I typically let the weight of the pen provide the downforce on the nib, with maybe a light amount of pressure from me-mainly to guide the pen. I enjoy both pens and it would be hard to choose between the two, but if I could only have one, I would go with the M800. If someone is interested in taking the plunge and acquiring either an M800 or M1000, my best advice is try writing with both, especially if you can try different nib widths (because there can be some variation between individual nibs with the same width), and go with the one that works best for you. Both are great pens!

I have both - the M815 Metal Striped in M and the M1000 Renaissance Brown in EF. My natural handwriting is quite small, so while I enjoyed the smooth and soft feel of the M800 Medium, the line is a bit broad for legibility. The M1000 in EF works for me as an everyday writer - and to be honest, I've become accustomed to the size of it. The bounce of the M1000 nib is very distinctive, and might not be to everyone's liking - even with a light touch it can feel like you're writing with a paintbrush. Personally, I love that feeling. - others might not. At some stage, I might swap the M815 nib to a Fine or Extra Fine, as it's a lovely pen that doesn't get enough use.

I own the M805 (with the "B"-ish Pelikan "M" nib) in the "Stresemann" look of grey stripes and the metal parts executed in palladium covered gold and I love it - just so still with the see-through stripes by the way. (and of course I love anything that's ante- and interbellum connected) While I have fairly small hands (I tend to wear "8" or "7.5" [unlined] gloves for proper fit) I love the size and dimensions of the 800 - I own a M200 and two M400s and I feel they are a tad bit small for the haptic feedback I get. I've been playing with the idea of getting a M1000 on and off for a couple of years since I love the extra large nib but I may also just stay with the "2nd size" as I do with my Montblanc Meisterstück 146 (though with a massive oblique "B" nib) - it's not a monetary thing - those are about as prohibitively expensive as the flagships especially with the "extra" features😅 - but the haptics just feel "right". Though if I stumble across a moderately inexpensive 149 or M1000 I just might be tempted... after all I *do* like the feel of my cheapo "149 sized" Jinhao fountain pens I use to write on materials at work (bespoke orthopaedic shoemaker and "orthopaedic inlay builder"). If/When there is a clone M1000 one could buy one of each to experience the topology of the pens for i der $100 for the pair. Then, after deciding which real Pelikan to buy, gift the clones or share then with friends who might be curious about Pelikans without risking your wxpensive fancy pen.

Personally, I hate clones. I am opposed to them on Philosophical reasons. There are iconic designs and other brands are stealing them. I would suggest people go to pen meet ups and try to see and try these pens or from a friend. I hate to see a brand profit from the hard work and legacy of another brand. Very timely. I think I need to stay the course on economizing, yet a Pelikan is tempting. I see Anderson Pens has some in stock. Sadly, Anderson announced today they are closing their doors. There is a decades long slide in progress from literacy, curiosity, and intellectualism. The autodidact is retiring from relevance. Support for the casual academic is disappearing. You can't save the world but you can save yourself. Think, pick up a fountain pen, and do something generative AI can't genuinely do. Create.

I have large hands too, but also think the M1000 is more of a special-occasion writer than a practical writer. The M800 is pushing it in terms of practicality. I also like the M800 nib better. I don't like spring to my gold nibs for regular writing - it feels like it creates more feedback. I like the spring nib for leisurely writing. I think the M400 and M600 simply don't compare to the M800 and M1000. Not because of size, but because of feel and how they write. The M800 is my favorite Pelikan along with the Pelikan M205 steel nib. I use my pens mainly for notes and daily work. They just feel better and I feel the Pelikan steel nib writes amazingly smooth - perhaps even more than my M800s.
@HemingwayJones2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure about that. I don’t have an M400, so I cannot say, but my M600 is excellent. I admire its more refined elegance in its more compact design. I do love these pens.
@mariopellegrino76612 ай бұрын
@@HemingwayJones The M400 is nice, but a little too light for me, and the nib feels like it writes broader than my other Pelikans of the same size (same issue with the M600). I usually write with EF for Pelikan pens, so when they were coming out like mediums regardless of ink or decreasing inkflow, while my M800 and M1000 EFs were coming out the way I liked, I got turned off. I had 3 or 4 M600s over the years because I love the size but sold them all, including all the extra nib units I bought, and even one custom grinded. I still have my M400 that I use, but I learned to accept that it's going to write like a medium with feedback lol

Although I love the softness of the M1000's nib, I would choose the m800 because I find the m1000 just too large and unwieldy for daily and extensive use. And yes, mine has the translucent barrel 😊 How could they abandon such design?? They lack both charm and practicality with the new opaque finish.
@HemingwayJonesАй бұрын
It is indeed lacking without the translucency. I can only imagine that it was a cost measure. Still a wonderful pen. Thanks for watching.

Man I wish I had seen your spot on video before I recently shelled out all that money for the M1000. It’s a beautiful pen but way too big and unbalanced for my hand. I wish Pelikan would come out with an adapter or a pen body that’s smaller that will accept the M1000 nib unit.
@HemingwayJonesАй бұрын
That would be brilliant if they put that nib on an M800 body! Truly. Thanks for the kind words on the video. All the best.

@@HemingwayJones , you are very welcome. My M1000s are the all black version and the traditional green stripe version. The black one has an EF nib and the green stripe one has a B nib. Both are the smoothest writers. I have only 1 pen that does not post, the Nahvalur Eclipse. I love the pen.

My only issue with the M1000 is that it's not bigger. 😅

I own both pens and I don't think you can make a generalised statement about who one of these pens is best for. They both write so differently that you should try them out before you buy them. YES, that applies to most fountain pens. But they are not cheap. And that's why I would recommend buying these pens from someone who can exchange them if they don't suit your preferences.

It’s a great topic for a video! A 20 minute video hardly being a generalization. All things considered here. I think you for watching and for the comment. Stop by again soon.

I think you hit all the points exactly how I feel about my M800 and M1000. M1000 isn't for every day writing so much as an M800 simply because the nib is so soft when writing. You really have to learn how to use the M1000 nib and it takes some getting used to. I'm glad I bought both and I wouldn't have it any other way. The M1000 really is unique. I have a nice bigger collection and there is nothing I have that is even close to that pen.

I was surprised to hear that you called affordable Chinese pens “Garbage”. On your Livestream on Tuesday. I was very disappointed in you for saying that. That sounds like you think that more than half of your audience is stupid for buying attractive,affordable, reliable, and durable pens for a fair price. I will continue to watch your channel because I enjoy most of your productions. I hope you reflect on how your audience might feel about this issue.
@HemingwayJones2 ай бұрын
What I said, if you listen to the whole clip, is that Chinese pens that steal designs from other pens are garbage and fakes. I stand by that and it’s true. I didn’t say that all affordable pens from China are Garbage. And you are saying that I am calling people names, not me. I would never do that, so stop. I OWN these pens! Some excellent pens come from China, but any pen from anywhere, and not just China, that steals a design from another designer is wholly devoid of originality and character. It was not at all in the context you are casting it in and I don’t appreciate it. Thanks!

Have m805 fine, m205 medium steal & MB146 fine. For me the best one is that cheap m205,buttery smooth. Don't know why that steel nib is performing better than those two gold nibs, may the medium. Worst one in my collection is MB146,yuck its even worst than the pilot metropolitan medium nib & sheaffer i had.
