I used to burn giant piles of leaves when I was a kid after raking yards,if they burn as hot as a pile of leaves does then you got some good fuel there. Leaves would be one of the best renewable fuel sources out there.Just about the only thing that would make this 100% great is if the machine ran off of a battery hooked to a solar panel.so you have to make enough pellets to compensate for the electric use in making them.

@letterbekmen plant matter has a natural glue called lignin when heated in the pellet maker binds them together.biochar is talked about so much now and pellets made from leaves like this might could be turned into biochar for soil amendment. 2.if you were doing a few yards with a leaf catcher on a riding mower you'd probably have even more fuel for yourself during the winter months. 3.this is great what your doing, keep up the good work and stay green

A brilliant idea...I can imagine that a friend of mine would be heating his garage this way!

You need to keep the die oiled to keep material from sticking in the holes between uses. You also have to occasionally had 90W oil to the machine itself.

The leaves did not need any binder. They just compress into pellets without any additives and make good, shiny pellets. Thanks for your question.

The rollers and dies last for hundreds of hours before wearing out. We sell replacement sets for $180 for the 3HP. Otherwise you need little maintenance on these machines.

@skyypilot01 They burn very hot and well. They can leave a bit more ash than wood pellets so we recommend they for multi use stoves.

@@gabrielpoirier4209 How much build ya ya get? We've been using our pellet stove for close to 20 years with store bought wood pellets and no build up besides ashes ending up in the pipe. Any creasole build up with these or grass pellets?
@makepellets14 жыл бұрын
@nicosantiago31 Thanks for your comments. The smoke you see is steam that's produced when making pellets. The pressure on the material from the rollers causes pressure and heat and some steam is released. the pellets are hot when they come out of the mill. You can email us at makepellets@yahoo.com for more info.

How well does the pellet stove burn these pellets...I just bought a used pellet stove, but read that leaf pellets don't do as well as wood pellets......just wondering.....If it works I would really consider collecting leaves in the fall to make pellets out of them......I would just need to get a pellet mill and a shredder.....
@Do_not_assume9 ай бұрын
what happens when you put in just the leaves without shredding them first?

@tappakeggaday1 They do burn really hot! Your idea for a solar powered mill is good. That's something I never considered!

Can you offer an estimate of the BTU/pound you get from leaves. Looks like mostly maple leaves in this video.

I hear that non wood pellets have too much ash or wrong type of ash and u get slag formation in the wood pellet stove , is this true?

How much leaves do I need to make how much pellets to heat a 3 bedroom home? Would a small yard of leaves and lawn clippings for that matter, for example, produce enough pellets during the spring summer and fall to last all winter or do I need to start doing the neighbors yards too?
@tappakeggaday114 жыл бұрын
@atvaddict well in terms of how long you ran that 3hp motor,well i usually can cut my yard with my push mower with a standard small tank and if she actually can heat her home several hours because of a small amount of fuel, then compare how long that gas would burn up compared to the pelleted fuel.both are a form of stored energy,chemical energy can be burnt a lot faster than solids.then also look at the national average on kw per hour on electric and this should help to figure out
@ozzirt16 жыл бұрын
The idea looks great, but what is the wear factor on a machine like this? How much does it cost to replace the die and rollers etc. How many pounds of sawdust for example would you expect to mill before the wearing parts need replacing?
@aaronhumphrey20092 жыл бұрын
Tons of material.Keep parts greased, die rollers adjusted..500 -750 hrs a die
@letterbekmen15 жыл бұрын
do you add anything to the leaves or sawdust to hold it together?

How many millimeters are there between the sticker and the press-roller? Thanks for your answer!

You can use lots of different types of materials to make pellets.

@Kntryhart stop and think about this,one farmer was selling his chicken waste at 6 dollars a ton and then he started turning it into char and makes 600 a ton now.these bio mass pellets could be turned into char soaked in manure lagoons on a cattle farm and then be fed back to the soil.then figure out how much electricity is at 33 hours with a potentially high profit item if turned into biochar

How much fuel does it take to run the machine for an hour to make the 60 lbs of pellets?

Maybe I am missing something. We buy a ton of pellets for $160. If it takes an hour to make 60 lbs of pellets (I assume all the hard work is done by that point, such as collecting, drying, shredding the leaves) it would take over 30 hours to make a ton of pellets. So, unless you have a lot of time (and leaves), isn't it much easier and cheaper to just buy pellets instead? Also, it is leaves, not leafs.

Its good video... Plz. mention Calorific value of leaf pellets. I am manufacturer of pellet stoves (residential and commercial) in india and sold nearly 2,00,000 stoves till date. And have a Patent. The pellets which I supply are made from agricultural waste such as bagasse, rice husk, etc.... Please brief me do u use any binder in this process and how efficient are these pellets compare to the pellets i make.

Do you have a website?
@makepellets14 жыл бұрын
@nicosantiago31 Haven't tried that, but if you can reduce the plants to the right size and moisture level (10-15%), it should work without a binder.

If you use energy to break up the leaves with your tractor running over then, then vacuum them up, then use energy making the pellets, aren't you using as much non-renewables making the pellets and you would get heating with the fuels directly?

@skyypilot01 I have used this kind of pellet before, mind you my stove is Ten Years Old, but they would not burn at all, they char but not much flame... was it my stove or not? unsure I am...

@Kntryhart no, obviously you mistook my meaning.and sometimes putting 2 and 2 together is a lot harder for some people to do.as an application for fuel then you would be correct for cost of fuel.so how can you make more out of this product if you intended to sell it?there is a huge market for bio char.pelleting machines would make it the right size out of ordinary waste products like leaves.and fyi,I have read a lot of comments and some pay 22.00 a bag and look for cheaper fuel.

Does this process work for dried grass? I'm thinking of buying property in a grassy plain. It will take about 10 years to grow trees, and it sure would be nice to combine weed abatement with getting heating fuel for the cold winters.
@aaronhumphrey20092 жыл бұрын
Yes. Everything to be pelletized must be ground up to the size of the pellet die. Usually 1/4" or 6mm. Moisture content 8-15% . too high won't form good solid pellets & waay too much steam will come out of the pellet mill.
@waltlars368710 жыл бұрын
Will this pelletizer work on wood chips from a tree service ? Or do they need to ground finer ?
@bhearts7710 жыл бұрын
most people use saw dust for their pellets. i dont think dime sized chunks of wood would work.
@waltlars368710 жыл бұрын
Most tree chipper chips would need to run through a small sized grate hammer mill I am just wondering how small the chips would need to be to go through a pellet mill
@bhearts7710 жыл бұрын
Walt Lars ive never personally used one, but i would suspect that anything larger than the diameter of the pellet would cause increased wear on the pressing mechanisms inside this press.
@waltlars368710 жыл бұрын
Wood chip are free with the right amount of scrounging
@bhearts7710 жыл бұрын
it might as well get turned into heat for your house. although i am very against cutting down whole trees for this process. the whole pelletizing thing is ideal for quickly renewable bio sources. it really opens the doors for people that normally would have used logs to heat their house. now you can use leaves, or grass.

@makepellets Think about it: there are tons of leaves in our cities. People think: leaves are just some kind of rubbish junk... must be removed from the cities. It needs some much money. And when the winter comes, we need so much money to stoke our homes. Money, leaves, trees, timber... BUT. Pellet is a way to: - protect the woods - help to remove the leaves from the cities - do some profit +++ SO: go go pelletes and rule the world :))

@tappakeggaday1 Chicken waste? This video was not about chicken waste, it is about making pellets from leaves. What they show is slow and inefficient. I know of pellet stoves that burn 60 lbs an hour! So lets look at return on investment @ 60lbs/hr.; forget the cost of the machine, electriciy, repair, etc. A 40# bag of pellets is ~$6.00 (0.15/lb). 60#/hr earns you 90 cents BEFORE costs! $0.90/10-hr day = $9.00 BEFORE costs! If this is all you need to accomplish in a day, then go for it.

Stop and think about it, based on their numbers, it would take over 33 hours to make a ton of pellets. Who has time to do that? Add the cost of the machine and electricity, it simply is not cost efficient. Interesting, but not worth the effort.
