pellets vs slugs. 177 air venturi avenger.

Good morning! Update: Testing @ 100 and trick shooting at 200 yds with .177 Avenger using NSA 12.5's sized to .173. results are good! Golf ball size groups at 100 yds with 1-2 mph winds. Tuning data included. I'll attach video of resizing to .173 & then 100 groups. And I'll include my pill bottle attempt at 200 yds for fun. Also 12oz water bottles at 200. Funny note, I got hits on water bottle before I even realized as the slug is only making about 12 fpe at target distance and didn't unsettle the bottle until water drained out. Another note, I have about 6 & 1/4 turns of hammer spring preload available on my rifle. There is a factory stop at around 3-4 turns, you and work through the stop by tightening a 1/4 turn into the stop and backing off and repeating several times until the resistance is gone. I saw this discussed on another channel. The resistance feels like a crimp around the spring rod and it can be gently work through, just turn in a 1/4 turn and back off then repeat until the tension feels normal. I know you don't need or want to max out your Avengers abilities but I've included the info to show others what is possible with this rifle if needed, wanted or desired. Anyway, golfball size groups with slugs at 100 yards seems pretty good for a entry level rifle. Cheers!! Iam getting better results with the 12.5gr Nielsen. They group great at 880fps. I tried them at 1000 fps but they didn't do well until around 880 to 900fps. Perhaps different speeds will change your results. Excellent video. Not many people show the 177cal. It's my favorite 🍻🎯

Just a heads up regarding NSA .177 slugs. I initially tested NSA slugs over a year ago but found the avenger would only push them with high Reg pressures (>2200 psi) and at least 3K in the bottle. The rifle would hang 12.5 grn slugs in the barrel if bottle pressure went much below 3K. Tried shooting the 15 grn nsa slug and they hung in the breech regardless Reg pressure & bottle fill. I had to remove the slug with a brass rod. I tried another slug and got the same result. This time I measured the slug after it was removed from the breech. It measured approximately .172. The heavier longer slug had too much barrel friction to allow it to shoot. The nsa slugs are sized at .178. .006” is too much resistance to over come. Bottom line, I purchased a NOE sizing die and used a .173 bushing. BINGO!!! Tested yesterday using 12.5 slugs at 2100-2200 psi and 3-4 turn of HS. Grouped golfball size at 50 yds and shot down to below reg pressure. Problem solved!! The avenger barrel may be to small to reliably push NSA slugs if not resized. Again, I was able to shoot the 12. Fives without resizing but they were finicky and they would hang in the barrel below 3K bottle. Will be testing @ 100 yds soon. 2000 Reg & 4 HS gave 900 fps avg. 2200 & 3 hs yielded 1000 fps and shot down to Reg without issue (other than velocity dropping). So nsa slugs appear to require sizing to run properly in the avenger.

The barrel on my air venturi avenger. 177 is also. 172 cal. I usually only shoot pellets out of it. Since it's nice having a air rifle that shoots pellets and is low power. All my other. 177 are slug shooter's. So it's not a big deal to me if it doesn't shoot slugs or makes lots of power

@@airgunsofidaho4886 - the .177 can make about 30 FPE so it’s not the weakest of .177 guns but it’s no 40 FPE gun. However I don’t know what a 3000 reg would do with a 15 or 17 grain slug.

@@motorgearhead my air venturi avenger. 177 can only do 12.5gn @ 860-880. On a good day. Not very good for a slug shooter. 20 foot pounds. My benjamin marauder. 177 does 15gn slugs @950 30 fps hatsan nova does .177 20gn @1000+ so I don't really care about making the air venturi avenger more powerful or make it to shoot slugs. Good luck with your testing I'll be staying tuned in.

My Avenger at 2,200 psi reg and 4 turns HS shoots 13 grain K.O. at 910-915 fps .. grouping less than an inch (target 42m) and I found that K.O. will not group well under 840 fps

I have a 177 in the Bullpup. I’ve had good results from the jsb 8.44s , but I’m only shooting to 50. There isn’t nearly as much info out for the 177 as the 22/25. How about shot count ?? I get 120 shots from full fill to 1500 reg !

The 705ft/s is very low for a 13.43gn slug projectile + the trajectory of the projectile is very curved. The Slugs, usually need more! I have seen several tests in connection with the slug test! At a low speed of the slug, for example, 650-700 f/s, it gave a bad shoting gruops at 50-100 yards, but much better at around 920 f/s! Maybe it depends on the slug, I don't know, but those tests were also done with JSB and H&N slugs in 177 caliber, 13-16 and 20gn projectile weights! The heavy Slugs /16-20gn/ These are very good for long-range target shooting, you just have to provide them with a relatively high starting speed, otherwise they are unstable! For example 920-950 ft/s is good! /I'm not talking about hunting, I condemn hunting!/ I only focus on target shooting for home!

If you could get the slugs to go the speed of the pellets there is a high chance you will get better groups I shoot 21 grain slugs at 710 out of my .177 gamo Dynamax and they shoot okay but if I up the speed the group is super super tight

Thanks for the advice. I only plan on shooting pellets out of the air venturi avenger. I have other .177 air rifle that are more suitable for slugs.

Yes, when doing test with new or different pallets you will always aim the center, but because they are different weight of what you usually shoot they will hit somewhere else in the target, so in the vídeo he was aiming Center at times.
