A strategic analysis of Mao would be perfect for the lecture series. You mention him often and your insight into his methods would be greatly appreciated.

What makes the "common era" so common and why does it overlap perfectly with the period denoted "AD"?
@rogerevans96662 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of Jewish scholars (along with atheists, Deists, Buddhists, Moslems, etc.) did not like the expression "B.C" (meaning "before Christ") because the word "Christ" is a title meaning "the Messiah" and Jews and those other people parenthetically mentioned for the most part do not believe Jesus was the Christ. BCE [meaning "before the common era"] looks a lot like BC and that new expression was an ingenious way around this problem. The word "common" simply refers to the age in which all of us are living. None of us are so old that we are anywhere near 2, 022 years old. We all were born many centuries after Jesus was crucified. Since we all have this in common, that is what makes this era in which we live "common". Hope this helps. It's common sense!

I don't understand this Peloponesian War thing. It's all Greek to me.

So true. War can never be explained, and total war totally cannot be understood.

You don't think it's strange that the only copy of Thucydides was translated by a sociologist... Thucydides is the exact opposite of Homer. So how is that possible. Then there is tacitus who did the same thing in regards to Rome yet it was translated by the Queen..

There were several thousand hellenes with the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. The movie 300 is a comic book mostly wrong as history. There is a controversy over whether historical movies should strive to be as accurate as possible. I am behind accuracy, especially when the actual history is quite entertaining by itself (e.g. for me Braveheart is one of the worst movies ever made).
