That was really a nice helpful video but sir I have a lot of doubt's and questions....!!!! I will be pleased if u answer these...... 1)What kind of material is generally used in pelton wheel? 2)Fly wheel stores energy and is generally used in energy creation......but in this video u told to stop flywheel effect jet of water is used........!!!!.....i mean we can create additional energy by flywheel effect then why to stop it......Why is it???? 3)Can we use more than 1 nozzle in pelton wheel???? 4)What is the difference b/w pelton wheel and turgo turbine????? 5)Why can't we use pelton wheel for low heads???
@mekanizmalar10 жыл бұрын
Hi Shva, This is a long list of questions. I will answer them as short as possible. I will add detailed answer in my web site. I should also emphasis that I am not an expert in the subject, someone with more experience might give us much better explanation in the near future. Answer 1: Since this is impulse type turbine water strike with high velocity to the wheel. Particles in the water may create "water jet cutting effect", therefore buckets must be some kind steel. Answer 2: Main function of a Flywheel is to regulate the erratic rotation of engines. When a four stroke single piston engine works, the power generated only in one stroke, but consumed in the other three. The power stroke generates enough power to drive a device and the other three stroke, but this creates erratic motion in the crank shaft. We use flywheel to smooth the rotation by storing excessive power to run the other three stroke so that whole engine works more smoothly. If we increase number of cylinders, the need for the flywheel decreases and it becomes smaller. When the Pelton turbine operating it feeds electricity to the grid. The demand in the grid changes all the time, and these changes are regulated by spear of the Pelton Turbine. But if there is very sudden drop in the power requirement, than the spear can't cope up with this sudden change and the speed of rotation of the wheel begin to increase, this is not desired, since we want to keep frequency of the generated power fixed. So wheel rotation should be slowed down. Answer 3: Yes, one and two is very common, but when you do a Google search you may see, 3,4 or 5 nozzle Pelton turbines. Answer 4: I guess Turgo Turbine wheel is easier to cast and manufacture than Pelton turbine and you can bring the nozzle much closer to the turbine. Answer 5: You can use Pelton turbine as low as 10 or 15 meters water head for small applications. However for large commercial production it is almost always the Francis Turbine is the choice under 450m. This is because available water supply in those elevations require multiple nozzle Pelton turbines which is not competitive as price wise to Francis Turbine. Since the water does not strike the blades of the Francis Turbine as it does in Pelton turbine, they will last longer.

Thank you for the video presentation of the Pelton Turbine. It was clear and concise. I have two questions for you. Where or who offers the best and affordable pelton turbine? Have you ever seen this type of turbine combined with the Kaplan Turbine? It seems to reason that since the Pelton system can handle a higher head pressure, but dissipates the force of the water, once it passes over the wheel; that you could place a Kaplan Turbine, after the pelton and capture more energy from the same water flow. What are your thoughts on this idea?
@pakassassin96057 жыл бұрын
that is clever
@mekanizmalar7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and support. The turbine that you described is not viable solution if one works just after the first one. Here is the reason. As you stated the Pelton turbines work in the mountainous region where the water head is very high (450m or higher), but volume rate is very low. However the Kaplan turbines require low water head (around 10-20 meters) but large volume rate. However what you are suggesting happens in the real world in different way. All the waters coming from from these Pelton turbines converge and collect in larger steams. The Franis turbines use these water power to generate electricity. If geography appropriate, all these water coming from Francis turbine combine and form large rivers where we use Kaplan turbines to generate electricity. I guess the best application for the Kaplan turbines is that converting tidal surges to the electricity.

@hjkllknk9 жыл бұрын
what is a multi-stage propeller pelton turbine?
@Mech.Masters10 жыл бұрын
Why do we call pelton turbine a impulse turbine? What does the word impulse mean?
@mekanizmalar10 жыл бұрын
If you hold a fire hose and direct the water toward a person, impulsive force will push the person away from you. However fast mowing water also push you backward with a reactive force. Pelton turbine works with the same impulsive principle. The action of fast moving water forces the blades to go away from the nozzle. Please read about impulse in here spiff.rit.edu/classes/phys311.old/lectures/impulse/impulse.html

0:30 The position of the nozzle: from up or from side - does it influence the efficiency? Greetings from germany
@mekanizmalar5 жыл бұрын
I do not think that position of nozzle effect the efficiency so much.
@Albrecht80005 жыл бұрын
@@mekanizmalar Thanks. :-) I thought, when it is from upside, the efficiency is besser because of the weight from the water makes more force. But I´am not an engeneer, thats why I asked. Greetings from germany

i want to know how water heads and flow rates are related? i mean that water stored at high altitude gives a high head then why the flow rate is low?
@mekanizmalar9 жыл бұрын
Water head and exit velocity is related with formula V = sqrt(2*g*h) where h is water head and g is gravitational acceleration, which is equal to 9.81 m/(sec^2). Flow rate is related to the Area of the nozzle and the exit velocity. If exit area is fixed, flow rate will increase by the water head. On the other hand, if water head is fixed, the flow rate will change with the exit hole diameter. The flow rate of the Pelton turbine is controlled by the needle. If the needle pushed forward, this effectively reduces exit hole area and reducing the flow rate. The needle can be pushed all the way and exit hole can be closed completely. In this case the flow rate will be zero.
@shreyashwagh9 жыл бұрын
mekanizmalar thanks alot for the explanation. But can you explain that why it is said that pelton turbine can be more efficiently used in case of high head and low flow rate whilst Kaplan can be more efficiently used in case of low head and high flow rate if by keeping head constant flow rate can be adjusted?
