Thanks for putting up with a bit of a blurry video. =) I'm rapidly hitting my head against the limits of the DSLR I'm using. It's just not quick on the uptake, so far as focusing is concerned. It works for demoing a hefty machine that's not liable to move, but finer details like pens or anything requiring a deeper depth of field is just not coming out well.

Soft metals such as gold add "springiness" to the nib, so that the teeth of the nib separate a bit when pressure is applied. This phenomenon is one of the elements that makes fountain pens have variable line width. Add a bit of pressure, get a thicker line. Steel nibs don't do this quite as well (although more recent steel nibs are amazing writers on their own merit) EDIT: Also, get yourself some Rhodia dot pads. Writing with a fountain pen on quality paper adds to the experience. Mass market (at least American) paper bleeds and ghosts too much.

Historically, ink was very corrosive, so a gold nib was going to hold up over time. And so the rest of the pen was worth engineering for it to hold up. Often it's not very necessary today, and the gold is not really a guarantee for the nib to have some spring to it. Lamy 2000 have quite a stiff nib. The cost of a gold nib nowadays mostly is a quality barrier that makes the fit and finish of the rest of the pen a bit better. Still I have seen modern steel nibs start to rust, which these simply won't.

No offense, honestly. But your wonky handwriting makes me happy inside. This is because you are very smart. Very well spoken and educated, however you're handwriting is like mine. People can be relatively intelligent whilst still having poor handwriting. Again. I respect you and your videos. Thank you for this and unintentionally help me feel better about myself.

Poor handwriting is just a sign someone did something more exciting than writing the letter "a" repeatedly in cursive. ;)

I really enjoy your whimsical musings as you narrate your videos. Not only is it very relaxing ,your singsong voice is a pkeasure to listen to, as is your pronounciation of English words. I am a huge fan.

Great video. Question - if subscribers sent cool stuff to you (pens, calculators, other unique/quirky gadgets)…would you be open to doing an “unboxing” video like this one? At least that way you aren’t paying for the product…just saying! :D

Lamy 2k is known to be picky about rotation of the nib (called a sweet spot). Your skips and hard starts might decrease with a more forgiving pen. On the other hand, if you learn to hold the pen well, your writing will improve. Just write often. I'm a programmer too, and big picture stuff / prototyping is well worth doing with pen and paper alone. Our minds associate certain places with certain activities, and writing code can give real tunnel vision, and is slower than protyping ideas in your head without the distractions of small errors as you iterate.
@1stSpyGuy5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip about the sweet spot, good incentive to learn it. Strongly agree about prototyping / high level design with pen and paper. Sure, I could use argouml or dia, but the tactile feel of pen and paper really helps the creative process.

That's the wonderful aspect to fountain pens - you can write & draw along with the best, & certainly, art is a subjective matter. In terms of the fountain pen that was replaced by this Lamy 2000, if you'd care to send it across the sea (unless you're already in the UK), I'll strip it down & clean it thoroughly for you. Slan agus beannacht ! Andrew

I have to say, that Parket Quink is one of the worst-behaved inks in Lamy and Pelikan pens. The ink is rather dry, while these pens are wet writeres. Try a Pelikan ink or a Lamy ink in there. You'll notice the difference. Also paper - Tomoe river if you are in the US, Clairefontaine/Rhodia in Europe.
@1stSpyGuy5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I made that discovery myself after trying to use it for a while after this video. Thanks for the tips though, I'll be sure to give Lamy or pelican ink a shot! :) Choice of paper is seldom up to me, but I'll make note of those two.

I hope this doesn't come across patronizing, but to anyone who wants to try to get better handwriting, I usually find it a lot easier to write neater when I write with the paper at an angle 8) (I actually write with the paper completely sideways, but that might just be me being insane)
@1stSpyGuy5 жыл бұрын
I've heard of having it at an angle, but sideways???

Do fountain pens smudge? I'm left handed and feel one may be wasted on me
@1stSpyGuy5 жыл бұрын
I think it can be mitigated with the proper ink and paper, but the short answer is yes, they do smudge, unfortunately.

I have a friend who writes left-handed with a pen. I’d suggest starting with a cheap pen, like a Pilot Metropolitan. Get a fine point; it will let out less ink. Then, for ink, I would suggest Noodler’s Heart of Darkness or Pilot Take Sum. This pen and ink combo will be a good start to get an idea how a fountain pen would write as a left-hander
@felixh27865 жыл бұрын
You can write with your arm/hand held perpendicular to the direction you're writing. This circumvents the problem altogether. I'm a righty and do this myself at times, and while it's not for everyone I'd recommend you give it a try.
@dolinman2 жыл бұрын
Please use a better ink. Perhaps Lamy or Waterman or Diamine or Pilot. Parker ink will ruin your pens….
@1stSpyGuy2 жыл бұрын
Very good advice. The Parker ink is the worst I've ever used. Lamy ink is great, and diamine is my go-to workhorse brand. :)

Step 1: Polish off that bottle of Jack Daniel's. Step 2: See if you can find your non-dominant hand. Step 3: Write as badly as this guy. FAIL! Step 4: Take a few Valiums. Step 5: Search for and eventually find your non-dominant hand? Step 6: Break two fingers on your non-dominant hand. Step 7: Write as badly as this guy. SUCCESS!
