I’ve read The Left Hand of Darkness, too, and The Word for World is Forest. I think you’re right that the Hainish Cycle books can be read out of order. I know Five Ways to Forgiveness has been hard to get a hold of but is being reprinted (in the US at least) in Feb 2025. I also think The Telling is out of print currently. Anyways, I’m looking forward to reading the whole series in whichever order I end up reading them in. The Earthsea books are all fairly short and were originally marketed as YA books I think? Your bind up copy there definitely looks intimidating 😅 I’ve read the first book and found it a bit boring as a teen but didn’t have any problems with the writing. I want to read the whole series, as well.

I’ve been intimidated by a couple of these series myself. I’m looking to Pick up Earthsea in the New Year! I didn’t realise how many words it contained 😅

I’ve read about 10 Discworld novels now. I started from the beginning and really enjoyed the first two books (Color of Magic & Light Fantastic). Some of the other earlier books I did not like much, though (Equal Rites, Mort, Sourcery) which is a very unpopular opinion. But overall, I’ve enjoyed them, read them as a palate cleanser or when I need something lighter, and am always impressed by how smart the humor is and how relevant and profound his observations are of human nature. Many people say don’t start from the beginning/read in publication order but when I’ve skipped a book here or there, I tend to regret it because the worldbuilding and cast of characters tends to grow and evolve from book to book and I feel like I’ve enjoyed the books better when read in pub order.

I have heard the Witcher books veer away from being about Geralt after a while, and it ends up being more about Ciri. I read the first set of short stories but wasn't super drawn in tbh. The Grace of King is on my 'I'm avoiding it because it's massive' list 😅 For the Dark King I DNF'd the series after Gunslinger because I was just bored. I read the first five Terry Pratchett books but the humour just wasn't translating for me so I gave up. 🤷♀Good luck with all of these though because this is a lot!

I think I tried the first chapter of The Last Wish when I was in a classic fantasy mood, so I was interested, although it didn't blow me away. I don't know anything about Ciri but I like the idea that the whole series wouldn't be just Geralt cause I could definitely see myself getting bored with him. I've been wanting to read the Grace of Kings for a long time, and I have it on my shelf, but I always have too many other things I want to read so I've never been able to fit it on a TBR. I know it's going to take me a decent chunk of time to get through so it's likely to derail all my reading plans no matter what I do. This is the problem with long books. I totally get why you'd be avoiding it :P

I'm interested in reading The Dandelion Dynasty and the Malazan series, eventually. Of course I will encourage the John Gwynne... perhaps I'll readalong with you all as a reread!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰BRIGGS!? Yes! I love Mercy 🥰 Hmmmm my youngest sis recommended the Expanse she told me I would probably enjoy it more than the show. I kinda got... not bored but just over Discworld after a bit.... I liked them, but my brain needed less silly, more intesity... I'll get back to them... eventually... maybe... perhaps. I do miss Death, & Granny Weatherwax. But.... Grimdark has me now!

I have read a lot of the Discworld books and they are fun reads to break up bigger books but I wouldn’t necessarily back to back them. I would recommend starting with the guards series or the witches

Now I'm imagining the mental impact of back-to-backing all 40ish books in the Discworld series... pretty sure it wouldn't be good 🤪 when I do try the series, I will probably aim to do one a month, or maybe less if I feel like it's too much... thanks for the advice :)

Lots of geat books here. Think the entire Earthsea series is the size of one Brandon Sanderson Stormlight books. LeGuin series are both a grouping of short novels. Liu is a must read series, written so well. The Gunslinger does start off slow, and is not for everyone. Gwynne first series was excellent, lots of typical fantasy tropes, with also some new. The Expanse is excellent real sci-fi space opera, enjoyable. Sullivan while I loved Ryria, did not think Legends of the First Empire was that good. Malazan, oh boy, like nothing you ever read, imagine being parachuted into a world and figuring out what is going on. Pratchett, read the first two and never continued. Good luck.

Oh! I like the idea of just thinking of Earthsea as one Stormlight book length. Although, Stormlight books still take me forever to get through, so we'll see how it makes me feel once I've made my way through Wind and Truth 🤪 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on all the other series too :)

I'm surprised that people have struggled with the language in Earthsea since they were originally marketed as children's books - maybe just the gulf between the publishing date and modern readers? Admittedly I've only read the first one (so far) but thought it was lovely. Would definitely recommend giving the Discworld another go - but don't start right at the beginning! I would say Mort, Guards! Guards! or Wyrd Sisters are good entry points rather than The Colour of Magic (not only did it take him a couple of books to find his feet, personally I find the wizard books the least enjoyable ones). I started with Pyramids which also works OK as it's a standalone book but not one of the strongest...although I will always have a soft spot for it.

Good to hear that you enjoyed the first Earthsea book. I think it most likely is just the way the writing style preferences have changed over time - it has been 50+ years since the first book was published! Also, children back then probably had a lot less options for entertainment, so they couldn't be so fussy :P I think I'm going to start with Mort. I have been warned off The Colour of Magic before 😅

I did notttt realize that the Leviathan Wakes series has so many effing books wtffff There's also the Rise & Fall series as part of that Michael J Sullivan world. 😄The chronological order of the series is Legends of the First Empire, then Rise & Fall, then Riyria Chronicles (totes can skip or temporarily skip to get the larger story arc just fine), then Riyria Revelations. So many books. lol.
@paperback_catАй бұрын
Oh yeah, I realisedI missed some of the Riyria Chronicles after I filmed this. It makes me more intimidated, but I'm for giving it a go and bailing if I hate it 😅 you're one of my dnfing inspirations :P

EarthSea easy-peasy. Witcher even more so. L.Ron - you'll need caffiene. Lots of caffiene. Gunslinger was a better movie. Expanse, read reciently, first books are best. Disc World - some good so not so much. Nothing intemidating.
@paperback_catАй бұрын
Maybe I can just apply lots of caffiene to all of these 😅
