An intensely powerful new novel from the best-selling author of The Bastard of Istanbul and Honour. Out now: amzn.to/2XqxIW8.
'One of the best writers in the world today' Hanif Kureishi
'Haunting, moving, beautifully written - and based by an extraordinary cast of characters who capture the diversity of modern Turkey. A masterpiece' Peter Frankopan
'In the first minute following her death, Tequila Leila's consciousness began to ebb, slowly and steadily, like a tide receding from the shore. Her brain cells, having run out of blood, were now completely deprived of oxygen. But they did not shut down. Not right away...'
For Leila, each minute after her death brings a sensuous memory: the taste of spiced goat stew, sacrificed by her father to celebrate the long-awaited birth of a son; the sight of bubbling vats of lemon and sugar which the women use to wax their legs while the men attend mosque; the scent of cardamom coffee that Leila shares with a handsome student in the brothel where she works. Each memory, too, recalls the friends she made at each key moment in her life - friends who are now desperately trying to find her. . .
'Simply magnificent, a truly captivating work of immense power and beauty, on the essence of life and its end.' Philippe Sands
'One of the most important writers at work today' Independent
'A vivid carnival of life and death, cruelty and kindness, love, politics and deep humanity. This is only possible in the hands of a consummate storyteller. Elif Shafak's lyrical command of language and narrative is breathtaking. Brilliant!' Helena Kennedy
'Elif Shafak brings into the written realm what so many others want to leave outside. Spend more than ten minutes and 38 seconds in this world of the estranged. Shafak makes a new home for us in words' Colum McCann
'Elif Shafak's extraordinary 10 Minutes, 38 Seconds in this Strange World is a work of brutal beauty and consummate tenderness' Simon Schama
'A rich, sensual novel... This is a novel that gives voice to the invisible, the untouchable, the abused and the damaged, weaving their painful songs into a thing of beauty.' Financial Times

She seems like such a tranquil, peaceful person. And then she says she listens to metal... Lol! Such a shock! Maybe this is the secret to achieving calm.

It is generally the ones that appear "calm" who are usually the ones that are the most broken & the most chaotic inside. So i would definately say: 'never judge a book by its cover'. Don't be decieved by peoples external presentation. Trust me, this is coming from someone who suffers from multiple mental health issues... i know it all too well.

This book was my first Elif Shafak read and I loved the book. A fiction based on such a scientific fact is first of its kind that I have encountered with. A lot of emotions instilled in me while reading the book. Definitely recommend it especially if you are strong to take up. More power to Elif Shafak.

@@booksourexistence2153 there are two stories going side by side. A married woman receives a novel from her literary company for critical review. When she starts the novel it facinates her. The novel is about the union of Shams of Tabriz who is a wandering mystic, dervish and a sofi with the great Scholer of the time Mulana Rumi who is not yet a poet. The novel absorbs the married woman who leaves her husband her children and home to meet the author of the novel.

When I read Elif aloud, ALONE!! I try to imitate her voice, and gentle accent, I love the way she speaks and her writing, like poetry begs to be read aloud. She comes from a tradition of oral story tellers and I hope her children appreciate their bedtime stories and the enchantress who tells them. She should be required reading in high schools in the West so we can better understand Islam, ah she mentioned preachy writers! She informs but never wags a finger in your face. Love her rings too. I wanna end this now so I don't know what books should I read, I'm feeling like I am missing a lot to learn, I am turning to sm stupid, I would love if sm can recommend books of any kind to relief, my soul, from this greed, cause I'm pretty sure books do brighten our lives. Fantastic and uplifting stories of black and non black women, their sexualities, their struggles in life. It is very humorous but deep novel. It could be a starting point. Make an effort even if you don’t feel like it and immerse yourself in the stories. You’ll feel better in the end. Good luck.

It is not Shafak. It is Şafak (or Safak if you cannot type Ş but never Shafak). Turkish uses a roman based alphabet so there is no need to transliterate her last name.

The Turkish alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet, but unless an English speaker has studied it, they will not know how to pronounce it. She knew what she was doing when she started using an Anglicized version of her name on her books published in English. Otherwise, the first question every interviewer would ever ask would be "How do you pronounce your name?" Her English-speaking readers can at least pronounce her name, even if they don't know how to spell it in Turkish.

@@be8nice and the same goes for all languages using the Latin alphabet other than English. I don't remember any Dutch /French/Swedish authors changing their names so that the English speaking people should know how to pronounce their name correctly. She is such a wanna be.

Reading 40 rules of love right now, I'm a Muslim and if i don't offer love and acceptance and support to the outcasts of society, and side with the weak, I don't know who will.
