Penguins on the shores of South Georgia provide an opportunity and a challenge for David Yarrow in this fine art photography shoot.
In 2018, Yarrow brought together a small crew of nine people, to journey to the edge of the world, in an attempt to create an art piece that captured the majesty of South Georgia.
South Georgia is located in the middle of the southern Atlantic Ocean, there are no flights or ferries to the island. It is only accessible via an 80 hour boat journey from the Falkland Islands (plenty of time to sweat).
Not long ago, this icy outpost was an example of the horrors that humans are capable of inflicting on our planet, as foreign whaling communities decimated the native flora and fauna and slaughtered the entirety of the whale population. South Georgia’s recorded whale catch from 1904 to 1966 included 41,515 blue whales, 87,555 tin whales, 26,754 humpbacks, 15,128 sei whales and 3,716 sperm whales: a total of 175,250 animals. Sadly the numbers are likely much higher than what was officially recorded.
Now, a different story is told, one of natural fortitude that holds promise for all endangered ecosystems around the world. The beaches of South Georgia team with wildlife and as a result, the visuals for a photographer or film maker are endless.
South Georgia’s recovery is as complex as it is dramatic. The explosion of king penguin numbers and fur seals are clear for all to see, but in part it has been facilitated by retreating glaciers making more space for the locals. Furthermore the increase in oceanic temperatures has brought a greater number of fish to South Georgia’s Coasts. It is one of those rare places that seems to be benefitting from Global Warming.
The trip to South Georgia was an opportunity to push boundaries at David Yarrow Photography. In order to tell this story we partnered with acclaimed Australian filmmaker Abraham Joffe ACS of Untitled Film Works (untitledfilmwo...) - the mastermind and cinematographer behind the Netflix series “Tales by Light” as well as Animal Planet’s “Big Cat Tales”.
It was Abraham’s task, along with fellow cinematographer Dom West to bring this journey to life, and in so doing, document the incredible landscapes and wildlife of South Georgia and the struggles of an artist seeking to capture it all in one still monochrome image.
Special thanks must go to UBS for partnering with us on the trip. They are as good a brand partner as anyone could hope for and their commitment to sustainable practices is a leading light in the financial industry.
To Natural World Safaris (www.naturalwor...), without which the trip would not have been possible. They are logistically the best tour operators we have ever worked with and David Yarrow, will work exclusively with Will Bolsover and his team for expeditions that demand this level of professionalism and scale in the polar regions.
Finally, thanks to Nikon for providing cutting edge camera gear for the trip. David is a proud European ambassador and thanks them for their support in all his photographic assignments.
Since this video was made we have changed David’s jacket due to ethical concerns and we have no affiliation with Canada Goose.

3 common features for good photographs : 1. They can be looked at for a long time. 2. Can never be taken again. 3. Somewhere in the image, There's something tugs the heart. Mr.Yarrow,...you are the best wildlife photographer by far.

I've never seen the vastness of the penguin huddle presented as it was in the opening shot. Spectacular! And, then to see the logs of walrus lying on the beach.

I've been to that spectacular place called South Georgia and I think it is the crown jewel of the Antarctic. You are so right about the feeling of a brain freeze, but the experience is amazing and when you start to focus on what you want to achieve it feels like a rush. In the end there will be only a few very good shots, but it's all worth while. Thank you so much for this wonderful video which really brings across the feeling that you get when you are there.
